CATHOLIC EDUCATION SERVICES Catholic Early Learning and Care within the Diocese of Cairns comprises a range of services. Leadership and strategic management of the centres is the responsibility of the Executive Director of Catholic Education. Through a team of professionals the Executive Director manages and facilitates a number of significant and particular delegations which include: Support of the mission of the Church as delivered through Catholic Early Learning and Care; Support of centres by providing services that strengthen capacity; Provision of leadership and forward planning to develop organisational capability; Financial management and development of centres; Monitoring of quality of services and compliance/accountability with requirements of governments, Church and parents. 2. PURPOSE OF ROLE To lead a team in planning, organising and providing a caring developmentally appropriate, healthy, safe and positive environment in a manner consistent with the Vision, Mission and Catholic Early Learning and Care. 3. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Typical duties performed may include, but are not limited to: Contributing to the implementation of the Vision, Mission and Values and of Catholic Early Learning and Care; Providing safe, caring and interactive supervision of children; Planning, implementing, supervising, observing and evaluating programs and children s experiences; Establishing and maintaining respectful and collaborative parent relationships; Ensuring positive relationships with the local community and participating as a member of a team; Adhering to and monitoring implementation of all regulations, policies and procedures and contributing to continuous improvement processes; Assisting the Director in the general operation of the centre including overseeing the program and in staff recruitments; Attending to duties of Director in the Director s absence; Other duties as required. 4. CORE COMPETENCIES & INTERPERSONAL SKILLS
Requires minimal supervision; Requires sound judgement, initiative and confidentiality in dealing with information of a sensitive nature; Is able to develop a requisite knowledge and understanding of the operation of the Child Care Centre; Sets priorities and monitors work flow in areas of responsibility; Genuine commitment to practices which support the best interests of children; Is willing to undertake all tasks in accordance with the stated aims and objectives of Catholic Early Learning and Care. 5. MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS Diploma in Children Services with willingness to commit to further study and/or professional development; Minimum of four years experience within the child care sector; Current First Aid Certificate/CPR; A current positive notice Blue Card or the ability to obtain a Blue Card from the Commission for Children, Young People and Child Guardian. 6. SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY (SELECTION CRITERIA) Sound understanding of the National Quality Framework and the Early Years Learning Framework and their implementation; Ability to produce and maintain documentation that identifies the strengths of the service and it s educational program and identify areas that require improvement; Ability to produce and maintain written record for each child s developmental needs, interests, experiences and participation in the educational program; Ability to produce and maintain written record assessing each child s progress against the outcomes of the education program; Ability to communicate in a positive and appropriate manner with children; Ability to interact effectively with parents/guardians and staff drawn from diverse socio- economic and cultural backgrounds; Ability to provide leadership and management skills to all aspects of the centre as required; Ability to lead, recognise and utilise the skills individual/combined in the staff team; Ability to read and understand documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; Demonstrated sound written and oral communication and numerical skills; Ability to work as member of a team and foster a spirit of cooperation with co- workers; Demonstrated lifestyle and personal work behaviours consistent with Christian values.
7. ACCOUNTABILITY The Educational Leader (Group Leader) reports to and is directly responsible to the Director for the effective and efficient performance of her/his role. 8. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION The incumbent will need: An in- depth understanding of and commitment to the mission and objectives of Catholic Early Learning and Care in the Diocese of Cairns A sound working knowledge of the Catholic Early Learning and Care context, its features and goals. The Commission for Children and Young People Act 2000 requires the preferred applicant to be subject to working with children check as part of the employment screening process.
