MINES ParisTech and Transvalor A shared HPC environment for advanced simulations As design simulation models continue to grow in complexity, more small and mid-sized engineering companies need to leverage highperformance computing (HPC) technologies in order to remain competitive. However, they often lack the time, domain expertise and capital needed to invest in HPC clusters, or to buy the annual software licenses required. By partnering with IBM, simulation software provider Transvalor was able to offer its clients HPC capabilities that have previously been limited only to large organizations. 90 % reduction in time to deploy new HPC applications with IBM High Performance Services 5
Transvalor and the MINES ParisTech school of engineering developed Aeromines, a cloud-based HPC environment for advanced simulations. Transvalor selected IBM High Performance Services, running on IBM SoftLayer infrastructure, as its primary environment for Aeromines. According to Romain Klein, cloud architect at Transvalor, We needed an HPC partner with domain expertise and a robust, bare-metal cloud platform. Using our IBM solution, we can get a new Aeromines job up and running within just one month shortening the lead time by 90 percent. Infiniti Red Bull Racing HPC technology helps make cars go faster Infiniti Red Bull Racing s engineering team is focused on designing and building world-championship Formula 1 racing cars. IBM Platform Computing provides the backbone of the high-performance computing (HPC) system used by the engineers to design and test components that will improve a race car s speed and performance. IBM Platform Computing allows the engineers to perform an increased number of virtual aerodynamic simulations, which speeds up the design process and reduces on-track test time by helping the team perfect car components as much as possible before manufacturing. 30 % faster simulations with IBM Platform Computing products 7
Infiniti Red Bull Racing s engineering team works in conjunction with the IBM Platform Computing support team to continuously develop new software tools to help solve simulation problems. Cypress Accelerating time to market while reducing costs As a leading chip manufacturer, Cypress sought to cut its total cycle time (TCT), with the goals of bringing new products to market faster and reducing design costs. The hospital deployed IBM Spectrum Scale, integrated with IBM Spectrum Protect for Hierarchical Storage Management, based on IBM Tivoli Storage Manager, to store massive amounts of data, comprising some 1.6 billion files across both disk and tape. Wellcome Trust Accelerating genomic research and collaboration The wanted to help its 1,100 England-based human genome researchers collaborate more effectively and meet deadlines with other research teams around the globe. The Institute needed to optimize utilization of its high-performance computing (HPC) resources on 15,000 active cores, spread across nine large clusters, but legacy optimization tools made this difficult. To solve the problem, the Institute implemented IBM Platform Analytics software on top of IBM Platform LSF, its policy-based workload scheduling solution. Using IBM Platform Analytics, the institute designed custom dashboards to provide its researchers and administrators with detailed, real-time memory utilization metrics for each job across the cluster. These metrics enabled the Institute to modify its scheduling processes to utilize the full capacity of the HPC environment. Massive calculations for risk assessment CME Group, Inc., a financial exchange company, was formed in 2007 by a merger of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and the Chicago Board of Trade. The company handles trading of over 12 million contracts daily, and manages over USD100 billion in collateral. CME developed the Standard Portfolio Analysis of Risk (SPAN), considered the industry standard for portfolio risk assessment. With recent changes in financial regulations, such as Dodd-Frank, CME is required to perform SPAN risk assessment several times daily for each individual customer s portfolio. To manage its high-performance computing grid and big data calculations, CME deployed IBM Platform Symphony. CME Group can now scale up to perform 700x the margin and risk assessment calculations, in minutes rather than hours. Instead, it was done in minutes. That was when we knew this solution was going to work. Nuance Storage for billions of voices Nuance is the leading provider of speech-recognition software, famous for Dragon NaturallySpeaking, and for voice-recognition technology used in automotive, mobile and consumer electronics devices. To keep its speechrecognition systems up to date and performing accurately, Nuance collects and analyzes thousands of speech data files per day. The company processes hundreds of terabytes of data daily and runs tens of millions of jobs per month. Nuance needed a way to store these billions of files, while also providing easy file access for its high-performance computing (HPC) community of users. 20 % boost in storage performance with IBM Spectrum Scale software The results speak for themselves: 600 TB of data per day 20 million jobs per month 17
