TASC Training Developed by Safety Partnership TASC SME Team

Why are we here today? Why Use a TASC? (Case for action)

The TASC Booklet

Learning Objectives Identify potential hazards in your job Complete a TASC as a team Identify the importance of your role in TASC Describe a top-quality TASC

Task Analysis Safety Card is a lastminute risk assessment tool that: Provides an opportunity for all workers to discuss the key steps of a job, the hazards associated with the job, and methods to control or eliminate those hazards Is specific to the task being completed at this time

Task Analysis Safety Card is a lastminute risk assessment tool that: Is complementary to Job Safety Analysis Is a way to increase the communication of hazards in the workplace.

Introduction to Hazards

How Do I Identify Potential Hazards? CHEMICAL: Are there any chemicals that you will work with or come into contact with? ERGONOMIC: Will you be working in an awkward position to complete this job? NOTE: MSD s account for 42% of all LTI s in ONT! PHYSICAL: Noise, Vibration, Temperature, Radiation SAFETY: Machine guarding, confined spaces, working at height

RECOGNIZE THE HAZARD CAUTION CHEMICAL PHYSICAL ERGONOMIC SAFETY Solid Liquid Gas Dust Fumes Vapours Mists Noise Vibration Radiation Temperature Posture Exertion Repetition Work Environment Machine Energy Confined Spaces Working at Height Material Handling Work Practices 9

Generic VS Specific Hazards GENERIC: Cuts and scrapes SPECIFIC: Sharp edges on insulation cladding GENERIC: Head bangers SPECIFIC: Valve stem 3 feet from the ground GENERIC: Pinch point SPECIFIC: Fingers crushed between valve and flatbed GENERIC: Burns SPECIFIC: Thermal burns from adjacent steam tracing GENERIC: Awkward positions SPECIFIC: Lower back strain from repetitive lifting Generic VS Specific Mitigating Controls GENERIC: Wear gloves SPECIFIC: Kevlar liners under leather gloves and duct tape edges of cladding GENERIC: Watch where you are going SPECIFIC: Caution tape around valve for visibility GENERIC: Watch where you put your hands SPECIFIC: Use slings to maneuver valve into position GENERIC: Proper PPE SPECIFIC: Kevlar wristlets with leather gloves GENERIC: Proper body positioning SPECIFIC: Alternative job assignment with partner every hour, use a step up or small scaffold

What you told us: Survey Results

TASC Survey Results Do you believe TASC is useful tool for improving the safety of a job? 91% Do you think TASC is used properly? 77%

Improvement Ideas What you said: Whole work group needs to contribute to input Need time to complete TASC without being rushed Card should be filled out at the job location, not in the trailer. Add section to re-assess conditions and make changes Foreman needs to be involved to review card and give feedback

Introduction to Procedure SME Team developed TASC SME had representation from Plants, Building Trades and Contractors Developed a Standard and a Procedure Nothing really new, but reinforces what you told us in the survey

TASC Procedure On a daily or shift basis before the job starts: Each work group has to complete a TASC Supervisors will review job steps Provide information about known hazards Discuss how to control or eliminate the risks Workers will take time to complete the TASC as a group at the job site prior to starting job

TASC PROCEDURE Everyone looks around the job-site for any risks not covered by the JSA Workers must modify the TASC or create a new TASC if something changes in the work being done Work group keeps the TASC with them at the job-site Everyone must know the location of the TASC

TASC PROCEDURE The TASC must be reviewed with a new worker that joins the work group New worker must sign-on to the TASC Work group will review the job and the TASC after each break Supervisors will review TASC quality, sign the card and give feedback to the work group

TASC Exercise Interactive Exercise TASK: Worker must change the belts on this machine

TASC Exercise Interactive Exercise TASK: Worker must cut angle iron using this grinder

Describe a Top-Quality TASC Relate it to the previous exercise

Learning Objective: Summary Identify potential hazards in your job Complete a TASC as a team Identify the importance of your role in TASC Describe a top-quality TASC Did we achieve our objectives?

All of us are smarter than one of us

Thanks! Comments Questions
