Topics include job analysis, job description, recruitment, selection, retention, performance management and diversity as well as coverage of the various personnel functions and the nature of union management relations as they evolve within a healthcare organization. COURSE OUTCOMES Upon completion of this course, you should be able to do the following: 1. Demonstrate knowledge of the organizational, legal, and environmental forces that create the framework for human resource management. 2. Evaluate and redesign processes and programs to target the organizational mission and goals. 3. Understand the strategic components of human resource management, and analyze opportunities in your workplace. 4. COURSE FORMAT: Hybrid with Week #1 online, Week #2 on campus, Week s #3 thru #6 online and a Final Written Assignment REQUIRED TEXTBOOK: Fallon, Jr. L.F. & McConnell, C.R. (2007). COURSE GUIDELINES Discussion Questions for online weeks #1, 3, 4, 5 & 6 Weekly discussion questions will give you the opportunity to discuss specific aspects of the course material from your point of view, helping to strengthen your powers of analysis and observation. Online discussion is a requirement for your course and is facilitated by your instructor. The discussion will help you think more closely about the readings, relate them to your own experience, and keep up with current events in the subject. Elements of the course This course has three fundamental elements: (1) online forums for posting/participation in discussion and (2) a week of interactive activities on campus; and (3) a final, written assignment. Course Online Discussion Requirements This is just a reminder that this course, as part of the grade, requires participation in online class discussion in ANGEL. Minimum participation requirement is to post at least once on three separate days during each online week. This creates a very positive opportunity for you to: - Read prior postings and get some ideas as you are preparing to tackle a unit assignment, - As you are working on an assignment, to toss a question or observation into discussion asking your classmates for ideas,

clarification, interpretation or suggestions to help you complete the assignment, - After you have completed a unit, to jump into online discussion and share some of what you have learned with others. It s a good idea to check in periodically, to see if anyone has replied to your posting and to which your subsequent reply would be appropriate. Actually, this can be very exciting because this is the only opportunity in this self-paced, distance education program where you and your classmates can meet and network. This is expanded even further with the on campus week and the opportunity for direct, interactive discussion. Guidelines for the Final Written Assignment You must apply APA writing guidelines to your assignment. As a minimum, this means: - The entire unit must be submitted as one Word document (.rtf if you are using a word processing software other than Word) with each element of the unit clearly identified. Graphs, charts and similar are expected to be inserted into the body of the assignment. However, if you are having difficulty with this, you may include at the end as an Addendum or, as a last resort, include as a separate document (such as a Power Point slide or similar). A centered, title section that includes pertinent course information, your name and information identifying which assignment it is, along with the date being submitted - One-inch margins (although APA suggests 1 ¼ inch left and right margins for Word documents) all around - Do NOT align to pages. These assignments are not printed; rather they are downloaded, saved, read and reviewed on the computer monitor, so keep the text uniform, perhaps using 3 lines spaces between elements of the assignment - Unless specific sections are outlines or bulleted, the text should be double-spaced, indented narrative paragraphs - Font must be a uniform 12-point, black using either Times Roman or Courier. However, I will accept Arial as well - Further information regarding use of citations and a reference list are noted below Research will help to validate your answer or to modify or even change your answer. More importantly, you must remember to give proper credit or citation to

your resources. This means using reference citations (see below). Now you finish up each answer with examples, illustrations and with your own personal observations and/or opinions and even relevant war stories this brings the paper to life and makes for interesting reading when I can see the student/author s ideas, opinions, comments or observations. Things like, while the established school of thought indicates that ya da ya da ya da, it is my personal opinion that this has failed to be considered and let me explain why and illustrate with a personal example. Now you won t be able to do this with every topic, but when you can, you should it makes the difference, in my class, from a good paper to a great paper. Reference formatting And, in conclusion you need to end with a Reference List of all of the resources you either read or used in developing our answers. This should include all of the references that you specifically used but it can also include other relevant sources that you read that you did not necessarily quote from. Again, APA can show you how to set this up properly and even give credit to first person sources say you interviewed a medical professional to obtain some of the information in your answers. This is done through the use of citations. A citation will immediately follow any borrowed information and consist of the last name of the primary author, the year published and if a book, text or journal article, the specific page(s) i.e., (Smith, 2006, pp. 45-46). An internet source may be a bit harder. In these instances, if the author is unknown, you can either use anonymous or use the name of the organization as the author. If there is no published date, then look for a copyright date and if one cannot be found, then use n.d. to indicate no date. Obviously there will be no page(s).

CLASS SCHEDULE Week 1 - Online Topic: Human Resource Management within an organization Required Readings: text chapters 1, 2 & 3 Discussion Forum: You will find that the role/functions of Human Resource management vary from one organization to another, often performed by others who have additional duties such as CEO, CFO, etc., and differ even more by types of organizations such as manufacturing, health care, education and banking. In some, HR performs more of an administrative function; while in others it is a strategic partner. Through discussion posts, let s create a list of the broad spectrum of duties often or sometimes assigned to HR. Obviously there are some basic ones common to most organizations; however, there are others that may be unique to one organization and not another. Let s create that list and discuss. In a nut shell, HR serves as both a support and an audit role. See if you can explain this. Essentially, there seem to be three elements of HR found in most organizations: (1) administrative and legal compliance, (2) employee recruitment and training; (3) and organizational training the latter two should be aligned with the strategic plan of the organization. Discuss these elements from your own perspective.

PLEASE NOTE: All graded assignments for this Week should be grouped together and Week 5 Online Topic: Maintaining effective Human Resource management Required Readings: text chapters 22 & 23 Discussion Forum: In can be said that the more effective HR professionals are, the easier their job seems to be and the less work they seem to do. See if you can explain this. PLEASE NOTE: All graded assignments for this Week should be grouped together and Week 6 Online Topic: HR and your organization Discussion Forum: Over the past several weeks, we ve covered/discussed virtually every aspect of HR. This last discussion assignment is to ask you to share with us, in as much detail as possible, the role HR plays in your organization; and discuss.

PLEASE NOTE: All graded assignments for this Week should be grouped together and Final Written Assignment (due August 18 th ) Throughout this course, you have had the opportunity to develop interests and impressions of the many aspects of strategic human resources management through assignments and activities. Now you must submit your Final Written Assignment, a paper that is 10-20 pages in length, double-spaced, using 12-point font, in which you must do the following: Demonstrate that you understand course concepts and can apply them accurately and creatively. Refer specifically to concepts from the readings or activities in order to demonstrate what you have learned. Provide formal citations and full references in your paper to support your rationale. Use APA style footnotes, text citations, and references. There are two projects from which you can choose one: Option 1 Employee Training Program Prepare an outline for a comprehensive training program using the general structure of Design, Implement, and Assess. Option 2 Job Analysis, Job Descriptions (1) Perform a job analysis by choosing three to five positions where you work or volunteer, based on the identification of Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Competencies. This should be a narrative description of the process you would use. And then, (2) Present job descriptions based on your analysis. I possess a BS degree in Education from Worcester (Mass) State College and I spent 15 years working toward an MBA, which I obtained from Thomas College (Maine), in 1996. Prior programs of study were with Anna Maria College (Mass.) and Rivier College (New Hampshire). I completed the course of study for a PhD, with Touro University International, but have decided not to continue to Dissertation; and have, instead 'converted' it to a second MBA, Advanced Studies.
