..for agreeing to be an assessor for your Institute. The purpose of this briefing is to ensure we are all assessing CPD in a consistent way.

..Why is CPD Important?

..Why is CPD Important? Lots of reasons. It ensures members stay up to date in their field It provides employers and others with visible evidence of competence It keeps things fresh & enhances career satisfaction

The Institute of Water s Approach to CPD CPD is at the heart of the Institute it s our reason for being All corporate members are expected to undertake CPD It is a key requirement of all professional registrations we award The Institute has a CPD Code that explains our expectations of members and the Institute s commitment. Click on the icon on the left to see it.

Registration Authorities Expectations for CPD Clear expectation of CPD. Nature and monitoring left up to the institution. May become more prescriptive in future. Expectation of participation in CPD and that institutions will monitor, although approach not prescribed. CPD is an absolute requirement. Scientists must affirm CPD participation annually. What is the Ideal Approach to CPD?

What is the Ideal Approach to CPD? Scoping Identify Needs It should Reflecting Reflect & Evaluate Planning Set Goals be a cycle: Recording Record Activity & Outcome Doing Undertake Activity

How do we Assess CPD? CPD is a personal thing we can t be too prescriptive But.. Everyone s CPD should contain certain key elements. We look for these when assessing CPD in the Institute:

How do we Assess CPD? Scoping Identifying development needs and opportunities Planning Setting relevant goals and target dates Recording Accurately recording development achievements and learning outcomes Reflecting Evaluating achievements and reviewing them against professional and development needs

Is There a Clear Plan? How do we Assess CPD? Scoping Are Development Needs and Opportunities Identified?

How do we Assess CPD? Planning Are Clear, How? Relevant Goals Set? What? When?

How do we Assess CPD? Recording Are Activities & Outcomes Recorded Accurately? There s more than one way to do this.

How do we Assess CPD? Reflecting People often forget this bit but it s important! Is There Reflection on the Outcomes & Revised Development Needs?

How do we Assess CPD? Does this feed back into further goals?

The Institute s CPD annual monitoring exercise Please use the form provided it aids consistency and ensures all CPD elements are considered. Try to discuss the assessment with co-assessor (and ideally agree!) There is guidance on usage and definitions provided with the form these are intended as a support but are not prescriptive.

The Institute s CPD annual monitoring exercise Key element of CPD Scoping Identifying development needs and opportunities Planning Setting relevant goals and target dates Element visible within the evidence provided in the submission? (Tick one of the 3 options available) Clearly visible Marginal Not visible Feedback Please be as specific and constructive as possible. The comments you include here may be provided directly to the member in order to help them further improve their approach to CPD. Strengths of CPD approach used Opportunities for further improvement Any general comments Decide whether positive evidence is : Not Visible Marginal Clearly Visible Recording Accurately recording development achievements and learning outcomes Reflecting Evaluating achievements and reviewing them against professional and development needs A copy of the form is available HERE

The Institute s CPD annual monitoring exercise Providing members with feedback is an important part of the monitoring process. It helps people improve and ensures that members get something positive back from the process. Please try to give both positive and negative feedback that is specific, meaningful and diplomatic! We d like to provide the feedback you give on the form directly to members.

How Will CPD Records be Provided? We don t specify as long as it is clear. What about the CPD portal? The Institute s CPD tool is a great way for members to record their CPD and is recommended because it encourages a best practice approach. But it s not the only way and other methods are acceptable.

The Institute s CPD annual monitoring exercise Don t forget the best submissions will go forward for the Institute s CPD Award.

The Institute s CPD annual monitoring exercise Here is a link to an example of a real (anonymised) CPD record & Science Council submission that shows many examples of best practice : CPD Example CSci CPD Submission What do you think? Are there any ideas you have to improve it? How would you assess this in the monitoring exercise?

Finally The Institute s CPD annual monitoring exercise Please don t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions. Thanks again for volunteering to assess CPD for the Institute. We hope you find the experience interesting and rewarding. And of course..

The Institute s CPD annual monitoring exercise Being an Assessor is Great CPD!
