about street league Street League use sport and physical activity to tackle youth unemployment. We do this by working with young people who live in the most disadvantaged areas of the UK, and engage them in structured football or dance fitness and education programmes with a view to getting participants into work, mainstream education or training. We re really good at it too! In 2015/16, 1281 young people graduated from our Academy programmes and went on to make positive change in their lives by getting a job or going back into education. This year we are hoping to help 1,650 young people. What programmes do we run? a) Football / Dance Fitness Street League use football and dance fitness as an engagement and retention tool in order to build the confidence and develop the soft skills of our participants. Young people take part in a daily one-hour football / dance fitness session which acts as a feeder programme for our Academies. The session also acts as the first step of their progression, with each participant individually assessed in order to identify the most appropriate support required to effect a positive life transition. b) The Academies Street League offer two principal Academy programmes. The first is the Personal Development Academy which is held each afternoon and runs for 4 weeks. After successful completion of the Personal Development Academy, young people can progress onto our more intensive 14-week Progressions Academy. As well as taking part in football and fitness activity, young people will achieve accredited qualifications and participate in a two-week work placement. The Progressions Academy is designed to accelerate progression into jobs, mainstream education and training while also utilising benefits only available in team-based situations to positively impact on the life choices that our young people make. Both Academies offer a rolling curriculum allowing new referrals to join each programme every two weeks. c) Aftercare Graduates from Street League Academies who have been successful in progressing into employment, education or training will be supported by our aftercare provision. Aftercare and Progressions staff engage participants in discussion to confirm that they are sustaining employment, education or training, and continue to track them for up to 12 months if necessary. We will also work closely with employers to manage expectations and further opportunities.

WHERE DO WE WORK? Street League operates in 36 local communities across England and Scotland in 14 regional offices. The Need Street League work with young people who are aged 16 to 24 years old from the most disadvantaged communities, because this is where the need for our service is greatest. Almost 40% of all unemployed people in the UK are aged 25 or under, with 201,000 people aged 16 to 24 unemployed for more than a year*. Long-term unemployment on a young adult affects their mental and physical wellbeing, and can lead to health issues including weight problems, mental stress and a loss of self-esteem which, if left unaddressed, can lead to depression. They are also more likely to get involved in anti-social activity, such as substance abuse or crime, and are more likely to be welfare-dependent later in life. There is evidence of a longer-term structural problem in that, even when the economy was growing strongly over the past decade and more, a minority of young people ++ (roughly 7-9%, disproportionately the most disadvantaged) were reaching the age of 16 and becoming long-term NEET - highlighting the need for Street League s services during periods of both recession and growth.
