i Light 2012 MEDIA RELEASE i Light returns with strong support for Switch Off, Turn Up Building owners and corporations across the island respond positively to the sustainability call Singapore, 24 February 2012 i Light 2012, Asia s first and only sustainable light art festival, returns in March bolstered by strong support from building owners and corporations for the sophomore edition of the Switch Off, Turn Up campaign. Thus far, 42 buildings have committed to take part in the campaign to drive energy efficiency, more than two-fold increase from the 16 properties that participated in the inaugural edition in 2010. The campaign has also successfully extended its reach well beyond the precinct, with buildings across the island pledging their support. Over the three-week i Light festival period, these buildings will consciously commit to switching off non-essential indoor/outdoor lighting and office equipment whenever possible and to turn up air-conditioning temperatures to a comfortable 24 to 25 degrees during office hours. Besides buildings in the area such as Sands, Financial Centre and The Fullerton Heritage, buildings in other areas such as Wisma Atria, New Tech Park and Tampines Concourse are also participating in this year s Switch Off, Turn On. City Developments Limited (CDL) has also stepped up its commitment, increasing the number of Singapore properties participating from four
i Light 2012 to 12 for this year s campaign. Annex A contains the full list of participating buildings. Festival organiser, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), aims to energise more businesses to come on board. Mr. Mark Goh, Deputy Director of Place Management at the URA, said: Participants in the last campaign collectively saved more than 41,000 kwh of electricity this was a great success, thanks to the participation of buildings mostly within. This year, we have widened our reach to buildings beyond to spread the sustainability message to more businesses and advocate conscious energy management in their daily operations. We welcome more businesses to be part of this initiative as we strive towards a more sustainable future. i Light is the only festival in Asia to advocate the use of energy-efficient lighting technology for a sustainable future. The participating artists were chosen for the use of energy-efficient LED lights and/or the incorporation of sustainable, recycled and/or re-usable materials into their light artworks. Some of these artworks will also leverage on alternative energy sources such solar, kinetic or wind to generate the energy needed to power the light art installations. The Festival will also be measured and managed from a sustainability and energy efficiency standpoint. Professional sustainability consultants have been engaged to work with all event partners, artists, contractors and suppliers to ensure that suitable sustainable practices are incorporated to reduce energy use, while managing resources and minimising waste.
i Light 2012 Coming on board as Sustainability Sponsor is Singapore-based integrated energy company The PowerSeraya Group. A strong advocate of energy conservation and Merit Winner of the Singapore Environmental Achievement Award in 2011, the company supports the festival s objectives to promote sustainable behaviour and practices. John Ng, CEO of PowerSeraya, said, Highlighting the importance of environmental awareness as well as energy conservation through PowerSeraya s outreach programmes forms an integral part of our efforts to promote a sustainable environment. The festival will bring this similar message to a broader community, which we hope will encourage them to use energy and resources responsibly. Visitors to the festival in March will be treated to energy-efficient displays, entertaining performances, workshops and competitions that aim to prompt people to start thinking sustainably and the various creative approaches they can adopt to live a more sustainable lifestyle. The public are invited to submit innovative, practicable energy efficiency ideas through the festival s website, to stand to win attractive prizes. More information on the festival programmes and activities will be shared in the coming weeks. i Light will open nightly from 7.30pm to 11.00pm from 9 March to 1 April 2012. The Festival operating hours ensure that festival-goers can easily commute to and from the festival grounds via public transportation, with access by way of the new Bayfront MRT station as well as Esplanade, Raffles Place and stations.
