This landscape includes both new and old media and an important theme for the module is the importance of understanding the ways in which such media interact, converge, co exist and transform. A key skill to be practised is the analysis of media texts in their contemporary and historic contexts. By the end of the module you will know how to relate specific features of media texts, such as a social networking site or a streamed television show, to specific features in their contemporary and historic contexts. 5 Module Code: MC3003 Module Name: Dark Side Of The Net Level: Level 6 Module Tutor: Marcus Leaning The Internet has had a positive effect on the lives millions of people, it has been thought to have empowered people in terms of the information they can access, has facilitated progressive social movements and has triggered economic growth and whole new industries. However in addition to such positive features the Internet makes possible many forms of less beneficial behaviour. It has been used to conduct crime; it has afforded criminals and others a whole new range of opportunities to conduct crime. The various technologies that have permitted freedom from oppressive regimes also allow for criminals to avoid the criminal justice systems and conduct crime that proves very difficult to detect. Upon completion of the module students will be able to knowledgably discuss online crime and a number of the key ways in which it is enacted. Topics are updated regularly but may include: 1.
