4 Course Synopsis MAS 101 AFRICAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM This course will adopt a comparative approach. It will examine African traditional and contemporary communication systems; structure, form and content, control and ownership and their influence on the socio-economic and political developments of the continent. It will introduce the student to the interface of African culture, politics, economy, with their communication systems. MAS 103 INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNICATION The course will introduce the students to the meaning, nature and function of communication, the elements and process of communication. It will also examine the relationship between communication and society. MAS 105 INTRODUCTION TO PUBLIC RELATIONS The course introduces the students to ways and means of establishing and maintaining relationship with the various media gatekeepers. It will also discuss ways of organizing various media events e.g. press conferences, interviews lunching, in order to get effective media coverage. Method of conducting image studies, analysis of media coverage will also be explained. *GNS 101: USE OF ENGLISH 1 Effective study habits and language skills; Aspects of linguistics and grammatical structure of texts in specific disciplines; Developing effective reading skills; Developing effective writing, speaking and listening skill; forms of writing and use of library. GNS 103: PEOPLE, CULTURE AND SOCIAL ISSUES Concepts of Society and Typologies of Society, individuals, Society and Environment, Language ethnicity, race, religion, Social Structure and Social Institutions and the dynamics of change; Urban/Rural Dichotomy; Cultural heritage with special features such as farming, metallurgy and commerce. MAS 107: WRITING FOR THE MASS MEDIA I This course is designed to establish a basic proficiency in writing as applied to the mass media, both print and broadcast. Students will learn writing formats for newspapers, magazines, radio and television as well as for on-line journalism. Extensive writing sessions are expected to be a part of the course. MAS 102: FUNDAMENTALS OF JOURNALISM This is a foundational course whose objective is to introduce students to the basics of journalism practice in print and broadcast and examine the structure of news, organizations and the news production process; and get the students acquainted with

5 basic terminologies essential in journalism practice. The course examines the nature and definition of news structure and forms, news gathering techniques, organization, Broadcasting Organization of Nigeria (BON), Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ), Nigerian Press Council (NPC), the Guild of Editors, and the emerging world of On-line Journalism. MAS 104: FUNDAMENTALS OF BROADCASTING This involves an overview of the physical, technical and societal issues of Radio and Television Broadcasting. It examines the relationship of the laws of nature that make broadcasting possible, as well as the scientist who exploits them. Radio/TV is also discussed in relation to the environment of broadcasting. MAS 106: FUNDAMENTALS OF ADVERTISING The course deals with Public Relations and Advertising as communication tools which can be used to market or promote a person, idea and an organization. The art and science of marketing will be discussed as basis for determining the need and type of communication solution which can effectively deal with marketing problems in different situations. MAS 108: WRITING FOR THE MASS MEDIA II (Prerequisite-MAS 107) The course is expected to train the students to write for marketing communication advertising, direct marketing, sales promotion, publicity and public relations. Students will learn writing formats for advertising, copy, writing for newspaper, magazine, radio, television, transit, and outdoor, and on-line. Writing for direct marketing, sales promotion, publicity, public relations and events marketing are also expected to be taught. *GNS 102: USE OF ENGLISH II British Literature and the Literature of the Blacks in Diaspora; Oral traditions and African Literature; Anti-colonial struggles; Independence and Celebrations and the search for new states. GNS 104: BASIC COMPUTER APPLICATIONS History of Computers; Basic features of Computer; Internal representation of data; Character Representation; Concept of data; Problem solving; Flow Charts; Algorithms; Introduction to Computer Programming with special emphasis on Basic and Fortran; Computer Applications; Use of software. MAS 201: NEW COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES This course is designed of equip students with knowledge about New Information and communication technologies. It examines the technologies and applications of computer and communication as well as multi-media systems, data communication, the Internet

6 and the World Wide Web (www), hardware and software for production, presentation and transmission of video, voice, text and data. Implications, impacts and challenges of ICT on mass communication and society are also expected to be examined. MAS 203: MEDIA LAW This course is a study of the legal framework within which the mass media operate in Nigeria. The laws affecting the mass media such as libel, sedition, privacy, contempt, obscenity, copyright, advertising law, and other regulations will be discussed. MAS 205: HISTORY OF THE NIGERIA MEDIA The course traces the historical development of the mass media (press, broadcast, cinema) in Nigeria. It will examine the various factors that have influenced this development. MAS 207: NEWS WRITING (Prerequisite-MAS 102) This is a practical, skill-based course designed to enable students become proficient reporters and writers of news stories for print and broadcast. Students are expected to learn to prepare publishable news stories under deadlines. The course examines: principles of news assignment and beats. Structures of the news story and other journalistic writing and genre shall also be discussed. GNS 201: HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE Elements of History of Science and Technology; Observation; Hypothesis; Experiments and Scientific explanation; Problems of Scientific and Technological Development in Nigeria; Science and Society; introduction to the nature of philosophy; Scope; Problems; and Key concepts. MAS 209: INTRODUCTION TO PHOTO-JOURNALISM This is a practical course. It is designed to introduce the student to news photography; emphasis will be on the development of camera operations, photo processing, and development, use of photographic equipment, developing photo-news, photo-editing and cut-line writing. GNS 203: INTRODUCTION TO FRENCH 1 Fundamentals of Oral-aural; Reading; Writing and Usage in the French Language; Grammatical Structure; Conversational Farm; various aspects of the French Culture; Use of spoken Language and Pronunciation.

7 *MAS 202: FOUNDATIONS OF COMMUNICATION RESEARCH The primary aim of this course is to introduce students to data gathering methods in journalism and mass communication; and enable students to analyze research data, and critically evaluate any piece of journalistic writing or social science research. Another objective is to help students to apply the learnt methods in carrying out research projects. MASS 204: EDITING AND GRAPHICS OF COMMUNICATION The main importance of this course is the consideration of the principles and machines involved in the visual presentation of words and illustration. This will cover such areas as processes of graphic production, types and type faces, hot and cold type compositions, printing processes, layouts design and make-up and the designing of caption for TV programmes, etc. Students are also taught how to write and edit copy in a style appropriate to the news media. Emphasis is placed on the preparation of articles and photographs in photo editing for newspaper publication. Editing and proofreaders symbols will be used in this case. MAS 206: WRITING AND PRODUCTION FOR PR (Prerequisite-MAS 105) This is a practical oriented course designed to teach the student the principles of effective writing in PR. The course will discuss the various styles of writing speeches, features, news releases, position papers, reports. It will discuss how to produce new letters, inhouse journals, brochures etc. MAS 208: ADVERTISING COPY AND LAYOUT The course is designed to enable the student know how to design and write an Ad copy and the principles involved for the various media print, broadcast, film, direct mail, internet. MAS 210: RADIO/TV PRODUCTION This is a critical examination of the structure, internal dynamics and function of the News and Current/Public affairs division of broadcasting organizations. Interpretative reporting of government affairs and production of current/public affairs discussion, news magazines and documentary programmes are taught. *MAS 212: SPEECH COMMUNICATION The objective of this course is to acquaint the students to the different form of oral communication. It covers skills and basic techniques of speech communication with emphasis on the phonetics, and mechanism of speech as well as the planning and presentation of speech.

8 *MAS 214: 2Units INTRODUCTION TO FILM, CINEMA AND LITERATURE This course is an introduction to film theory and practice. The students shall be taught the fundamentals of film theory, as well as the techniques of film making within the historical context and special focus on Nigeria. The student shall be introduced to the interface of film, cinema and literature. Course Outline: i) History of film and cinematography ii) Introduction to film theories iii) Film making- pre-production iv) Film making-shooting and other production/techniques v) Film making- post-production vi) Film animation vii) Film distribution and marketing viii) Trends in film making ix) Notable film makers in Nigeria x) Challenges to the film industry in Nigeria xi) Film and cinema management. GNS 204: INTRODUCTION TO FRENCH II This course is a continuation of GNS 203. Emphasis is on basic Language Skills; Speaking; Reading; Writing and Listening and Comprehension. MAS 301: INTERNATIONAL COMMUNICATION (Prerequisite MAS 103) The course will discuss the nature and character of international/global communication. It will discuss current issues in the flow of communication across national boundaries and their socio-cultural implications as well as the technological, economic, political and ideological factors that have influenced international communication. Issues like convergence, conglomeration, cultural imperialism, dominance and dependency within the system; national sovereignty etc. will be critically examined. *MAS 303: COMMUNICATION RESEARCH (Prerequisite- MAS 202) This course teaches students to data gathering methods/ research techniques in Mass Communication- observation, experimentation, content analysis and survey. The student is encouraged to conceive a research problem, select an appropriate methodology and carry out research in mass communication. On completion of this course, the student should understand the empirical or qualitative approach to human inquiry. MAS 305: COMMUNICATION AND SOCIETY (Prerequisite MAS 103) The course examines the roles of the mass media as social institutions, their influence and impact on the society, the nature of the mass media industry and relationships with other institutions. The contribution of the media to issues of gender, stereotypes, cultural identity, national integration, social violence etc will be critically examined. MAS 307: COMMUNICATION FOR DEVELOPMENT The course introduces the student to the role of communication in the development process. It will examine the meaning of development and paradigm shifts in the

9 conceptualization of the relationship between communication and development, theories of social change, media of development communication, theories of attitude and behavioural change communication, the planning and execution of development communication campaigns in such areas as health, agriculture etc. MAS 309: MEDIA ETHICS (Prerequisite MAS 203) This course deals with the examination of the nature of ethics and morality, with particular regard to the ethical requirement of mass communication profession and its professionals. Codes of ethics in journalism, broadcasting, and public relations are also analysed. The NUJ/Press Council, the APCON, NBC, NIPR codes of ethics etc are examined. The concepts of brown envelope or gratification are discussed and the need to have and preserve the journalistic integrity is part of the focal points of this course. GNS 301: ENTREPRENEURIAL SKILL 1 Introduction to entrepreneurship and new venture creation; entrepreneurship in theory and practice; the opportunities; the entrepreneurial team and finance; Marketing and the new venture; Innovation; Growth and harvest; Workshop. *MAS 302: PRECISION JOURNALISM (Prerequisite 202 & 303) This course teaches how social scientific tools could be applied to routine reportorial activities in order to lend empirical authenticity to reports and information carried in the mass media. It sensitizes the student to the need to apply scientific tools to news gathering, processing and reporting. MAS 304: ISSUES IN NIGERIAN MEDIA (Prerequisite MAS 205) The course will discuss various contemporary issues that are relevant to the development, structure, political and economic functions of mass communication in Nigeria. The course underscores the dynamics of the Nigerian mass communication industry. Students will be encouraged to identify the issues and present well researched papers in a class seminar. MAS 306: COMMUNICATION THEORY The course will introduce the students to the meaning, nature function and application of theory. It will discuss the various models and theories of mass communication and the relationship among theory, research and practice.

10 MAS 308: DEVELOPMENT REPORTING The course builds on the various reporting courses to more specifically focus on development themes enunciated in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and other emerging global and local issues including gender, globalization, child rights, climate change, population, Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria and other health interventions, environment, food security, youth empowerment, conflict and peace. It is designed to further an appreciation of the logic of communication and development in action. GNS 302: ENTREPRENEURIAL SKILL II (Prerequisite 301) These are the recommended skills from which each Student is required to choose one. i.) Soap/Detergent; Tooth brushes and Tooth paste making ii.) Cloth dyeing/textile blocks making iii.) Fisheries/Aquaculture iv.) Bakery v.) Interior Decoration vi.) Animal Husbandry (Poultry, Piggery, Goat rearing e.t.c) vii.) Artisanal Fishing MAS 301: MEDIA ATTACHMENT Prerequisite accumulation of 72 passed credit units This is a requirement for students to be exposed to the media for practical experience. They are expected to put in a minimum of 12 weeks of intensive industrial attachment. Each student is expected to keep a log book duly signed by the supervising officer and the Departmental Supervisor. MAS 401: COMMUNICATION, MEDIA AND POLITICS The course will discuss the relationship between the communication, media and politics. It will examine how both have influenced each other and the consequences of this for citizen participation in the political process and in general, the nature of politics and public policy process. MAS 403: BEHAVIOUR CHANGE COMMUNICATION (Prerequisite- MAS 307) The objective of this course is to introduce the student to the theory and practice of behavioral change communication. The course examines: theories and models of behavioural change, key approaches to behavioral change approaches aimed at the individual level behavioral change, information, education and communication (IEC); and community level interventions. Major BCC campaigns in Nigeria shall also be

11 examined. The student is expected to design an hypothetical BCC campaign as part of this course. MAS 405: COMPARATIVE MEDIA SYSTEM (Prerequisite- MAS 301) The course is to introduce the student to a comparative approach to the understanding of the mass media in terms of their roles, structure and relationships to socio-political systems. *MAS 407: EDITORIAL WRITING This course designed to expose the students to the general principles and practices of writing in-depth comments. It is an intensive writing practice of columns based on opinions with particular emphasis on analysis and interpretation of events, from corporate and individual points of view. On completion of this course, the student should understand the structure, nature, function, effects and stragies of editorial writing, as well as its evolution and types, and how to write columns. MAS 409: RESEARCH PROJECT I Prerequisite- accumulation of 108 passed credit units. The research project allows students to initiate and execute a scientific research effort, under the supervision of a lecturer that is of publishable standard and that enhances knowledge. The research project must in substance and procedure conform to mass media research tradition. MAS 412: RESEARCH PROJECT II (Prerequisite- MAS 409) The research project started in MAS 409 will be defended and corrected version submitted as a condition for graduation.

13 BROADCAST SEQUENCE (Radio/Television) MAS 311: RADIO / TELEVISION STUDIO OPERATIONS This course involves systematic analyses of Radio and Television studio/control room, technology and the nature of sound. (Practicum) MAS 313: RADIO NEWS REPORTING AND PRODUCTION This course includes teaching students about the appraisal of the broadcast reportorial process, review of sources and elements of news. It includes also instructing students on gathering and writing news for radio broadcast (with guidelines for its preparation, including producing news summaries and bulletins of various formats). It involves also introduction to radio news magazines. MAS 315: INTERNATIONAL BROADCASTING Comparative analysis of national systems of broadcasting in terms of the various types of ownership, programming, control, purpose and resultant effects and impacts. Exposure to the various international organizations dealing with straight news and programmes, their purposes and impacts are also examined in the coursework. MAS 310: ANNOUNCING AND PERFORMANCE Exposure to the fundamentals of voicing and the nature of speech are the major focus of this course. It involves also the review of performance techniques with regard to the microphones and camera, as well as an understanding of performance personnel; the actor, the announcer, the disk jockey, the news reporter, the interviewer, the master of ceremony and the narrator. Practical exercises in the various roles are also included in the coursework. MAS 312: EDUCATIONAL BROADCASTING Assessment of educational potentials and limitations of Radio and Television in producing educational programmes. It is also an evaluation of pedagogic approaches and production techniques, including the planning and production of supplementary materials and teaching aids. MAS 314: COMMUNITY BROADCASTING The course includes the analysis of community needs and problems with regard to the role and quality of Radio and Television in community development. It encourages students to plan community development projects for implementation through special radio and television programmes.

14 MAS 411: BROADCASTING MANAGEMENT AND PROGRAMMING Analysis of the nature and process of management with particular reference to the different types of broadcasting stations and their settings is most importantly taught in this course. MAS 413: TV NEWS REPORTING AND PRODUCTION This is a critical examination of the structure, internal dynamics and functions of the News and Current/Public affairs division of broadcasting organizations. Interpretative reporting of government affairs and production of current/public affairs discussion, news magazine and documentaries are taught. MAS 415: BROADCAST COMMENTARY AND CRITICAL WRITING An examination of the opinion function of broadcasting and type of commentaries with particular attention to the editorial and application of principles derived from research in persuasive communication and attitude change form from the core of this course. Distinction between commentary and critical writing: types of criticisms and art review for radio and television are also taught in this course. MAS 417: DRAMA AND DOCUMENTARY PRODUCTION The course focuses on production drama and documentary for radio and television. Emphasis will be on special problems involved in producing drama and documentary for radio and television; blogging, casting, budgeting, and performance. MAS 414: PUBLIC AFFAIRS BROADCASTING The course is designed to teach broadcast reporting techniques as applied to public affairs. The students is expected to learn broadcast news coverage as applied to the courts and law, legislative bodies, executive offices the presidency and the state house, government agencies, and politics and elections. Reporting techniques and principles appropriate to public affairs as well as possible pitfalls and challenges facing public affairs reporting in broadcast shall also be examined. MAS 416: FILM AND VIDEO PRODUCTION This is a practical skill-based course designed t o teach basic techniques in video and film production. The course shall commence with an introduction to the technical terms used in film making and video production. Non-dramatic production e.g. social events, sporting events, etc. shall be the focus of practical work. Camera approach using single or multiple camera set-ups, shall be discussed. The course shall also examine stages in both film and video production: planning, shooting, editing and distribution. A video production of 30 minutes or more is expected to be a part of the course.

15 MAS 418: ISSUES IN BROADCASTING Involves a survey of critical, and contemporary matters that generate controversy in broadcasting, such as sex, violence, media ownership, deregulation of the airwaves, the broadcast regulatory bodies, community radio, community television, network allocation, gender and children, cable and satellite broadcasting, etc. it also involves impacting on students the skill for designing programmes. Issues around cultural domination, political and economic control of news are also constantly analyzed. In-depth study of one or two issues, with particular reference to broadcasting in Nigeria will be undertaken. MAS 420: STATION MANAGEMENT AND OPERATIONS Practical daily management of a (Radio & Television) station; its programme planning/scheduling, traffic control, personnel management, planning and directing of outside broadcasts; simulation of live broadcast. 17 *MAS 327: ICT IN PR AND ADVERTISING The course is designed to offer students knowledge of the application of information technologies in public relations and advertising programmes. At the end of the course, students will be able to apply ICT tools in planning any PR and advertising activity. MAS 324: ADVERTISING CREATIVE STRATEGIES AND TACTICS The course introduces the student to the methods of designing and creating effective advertising messages for various media. It will also examine consumer and market survey methods, copy tasting techniques, advertising readership studies. MAS 326: CONSUMER BEHAVIOUR The course is designed to introduce the student to the methods of understanding the nature of the consumer and the market-place. It will discuss how to understand the changing trends and psychosocial and demographic profile of consumer tastes, preferences, motivation, media consumption habits. The course will be approached mainly from a PR & Advertising perspective. MAS 429: COMMUNITY RELATIONS The course examines the practice of community relations. It will discuss issues such as nature and structure of community programme management, social research techniques, corporate social responsibility, stake-holder analysis, approaches and channels of community relations, media and communication analysis. Case studies will be examined to illustrate the challenges of community relations practice as a PR tool.

18 *MAS 431: ADVERTISING AND PR CAMPAIGN MANAGEMENT The course will introduce the students to the process of planning and executing a successful Advertising or PR campaign. Issues to be examined will include writing and preparation of campaign briefs/proposal, market/consumer/audience research, budgeting, message development and production, media analysis, setting PR & Advertising objectives, monitoring and evaluation. MAS 433: INTERNATIONAL PR & ADVERTISING The course will examine the practice of PR in this age of globalization. The role of ICTs in the practice of PR & Advertising will also be examined. The exportation Importation and adoption of foreign PR and advertising models, structures, finance, programmes and products and their socio-cultural implications will also be critically discussed. MAS 430: PR AND ADVERTISING AND RESEARCH The student will be introduced to the process of planning and conducting quantitative research in PR and Advertising contexts. 20 PRINT SEQUENCE MAS 317: BOOK PUBLISHING This course deals with the general idea of publishing as an intellectual and cultural activity with a business undertone. The course also examines the origin, growth, publishing process, techniques and challenges of book publishing. It shall combine theory with practice, culminating in a publishing project to be undertaken by the student. MAS 319: PUBLIC AFFAIRS REPORTING The course explores the structures, dynamics and functions of news and public affairs department of government, international organizations or private settings. It also examines investigative and interpretative reporting of public institutions, agencies and the government. It expects the student to produce current report through news magazine, newspaper article and journal. Public affairs reporting also includes: in-depth interviews through group discussions and activities. MAS 321: COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER This is a how to do it course. It examines the basis of a community newspaper. It tackles the nature, function and relevance of a newspaper in community development. A practical dimension to this course is CALEB COMMUNITY NEWS which the students will produce in fulfillment of the requirements of the course. MAS 323: SPECIALIZED REPORTING This course is designed (1) to provide instruction in the techniques of reporting specialized subjects such as agriculture, medicine, religion, sport, labour, the courts, the arts and the like; (2) to expose students to the basic literature, as well as the practical knowledge of reporting specialized subjects or topics. A keyr component of this course will be a module on Child Rights Reporting MAS 316: FEATURE WRITING This course provides exposure to the writing and analysis of articles for newspapers, Magazines, subject research, investigation and interpretation of issues, ethical problems and preparation of copy. Types of features, determination of topic relevance, activities of the feature desk, issue of style in features, readability and creative use of language are also highlighted. MAS 318: PHOTO EDITING The course teaches the use of Photoshop, Macromedia Fireworks and other editing software for cropping, sizing and manipulating photographic images for print, television and film.

21 MAS 320: MANUSCRIPT ACQUISITION AND PRODUCTION The course deals with the generation and development of manuscripts for books, journals, monographs, periodicals etc. it also covers in-depth study of contemporary processes of manuscript acquisition. *MAS 322: ONLINE JOURNALISM This course is designed as a practical skill based project that will teach the students how to write and produce for online media. The various online newspaper in Nigeria shall be examined as well as other international online publications. Other online genres such as webcasting, online radio, etc are expected to be taught. MAS 419: DESKTOP PUBLISHING This course introduces students to writing, edition and designing newsletters and other short publications, using personal computers and desktop publishing software. Emphasis is on the layout and design of newsletters, brochures and newspapers with special attention to readability and blogging. Basic competence in the use of personal computers is required. MAS 421: ADVANCED REPORTING This course deals with more advanced level of news reporting. It looks at reporting beyond just news writing to include teaching students on how to report more analytically. MAS 423: INVESTIGATIVE AND INTERPRETATIVE REPORTING This course is designed to teach the skills of journalistic investigation and interpretative news reporting and article writing. The student will be exposed to the techniques of enquiry and interpretation of issues. MAS 425: NEWSPAPER AND MAGAZINE PRODUCTION The course is designed to introduce students to the necessary skills of print journalism production. It will expose them all in the various parts of a newspaper and magazine editig and production. Students will also be exposed to how to process editorial material. The various editing and production strategies/approaches would be taught. Students will produce the CALEB EXPRESS newspaper as part of the course work. MAS 427: NEWS AGENCY REPORTING This course exposes the student to international news gathering and reporting through wire services. The student is introduced to international news organizations and how they operate. The political, economic and psycho-social factors that impinge on the performance and efficiency of a foreign correspondent are discussed. The student is also introduced to the various levels at which news agencies operate national, e.g NANS regional, PANA; international, Reuters, AFP, and specialized, OPECNA.

22 MAS 422: EDITORIAL WRITING This is an in-depth study of what it takes to write a successful editorial, the nitty-gritty of editorial writing-style, types of editorial, language, logic, targeting of an audience. It presents the composition and politics of the editorial boardroom and the role of editorial page, editorial board, in shaping public decision making. MAS 424: CRITICAL WRITING AND REVIEWING The course builds on previous writing courses. It, however, delves into the place of logical reasoning and criticism in all forms of writing namely: articles, journals and books. It further examines the role of book review in the development of the book industry as well as the acquisition of reviewing skills. 24 MAS 325: FILM AND VIDEO PRODUCTION This course exposes students to the brief introduction to the technical term in production eg frame sequence, short timing, etc; Non- dramatic production eg, social events, sporting events; camera approach in non-dramatic; single or multiple camera set-up and three camera set-up; stages/ steps in both film and video production; planning, shooting, editing and distribution ; restraints in creativity in film and video production; issues in film and video production, violence in film and video production and sex abuse in film and video production. This course teaches students basic terms in film and video production; pre- production chain; the video/ film camera; camera: shooting approaches/strategies; houses; lightings- indoor/outdoor; video/film editinglinear; video/film editing-non-linear; feature and documentary production; field trips to selected productions; NOTE: Students are expected to participate in broadcast quality programme as part of a class project. MAS 327: DIGITAL FILM MAKING This course will introduce the students to the various techniques used in digital film making. MAS 331: POST- MODERN NIGERIAN FICTION AND FILM This course will survey fiction and film during the post- modern era. Since about the 1960 and will develop skills in critical reading, analyses, evaluation and writing about imaginative literature and film. MAS 324: TOPICS IN FILM STUDY This course is an investigation of major issues and concerns in film study; topics will vary, but may include studies of directors, genres, historical movements, critical approaches and themes. MAS 326: CLASSIC NOOLLYWOOD CINEMA This course introduces students to the strategies and methods of film criticism and studies narrative components of film (film grammer, including but not limited to; directors strategies, shot properties, mise-en-scene, editing, acting and the use of sounds in film, especially classic Noollywood movies. MAS 328: THE HISTORY OF FILM This course surveys the history of film from its earliest beginning in the 19 th Century to the present. NOTE: Students must attend scheduled screening session.

25 MAS 330: THE HORROR FILM This course introduces students to the development, techniques, and aesthetic of the horror films. Locating horror films within their social and cultural context, it focuses on the major works of disrcrete periods. Finally, the course analyses the artistry of horror film by drawing on the principles and methods of literary and film criticism. MAS 429: WOMEN IN FILM This course introduces students to the strategies and methods of film criticisms and studies narrative components of film (film grammer), including, but limited to; camera angles, camera distance, composition and framing, mis-en-scene, editing, acting, and the use of sound in film. The course also introduces the use of genres and styles of film making including the Noollywood paradigm, avant-garde film making and documentary film making. MAS 431: WORLD/ ETHNIC FILM This course explores the ways in which film exposes varied and complex ideas of national identity, and acquaints students with some of the major works, movements and directors in international and ethnic cinemas. Students will discuss the influences, aesthetics and political motivation of key film makers. MAS 432: FILM ANIMATION (Prerequisite: Film Production) This course is an exploration of the history of animation; development of the cartoon film. It teaches the student the traditional techniques of animation (cel-animation) and recent technical innovations-automation and computerization. Students will learn the preparation and treatment of detailed verbal script; the storyboard; visual choreography. Also, the course will analyse the uses of animation- its place in entertainment, public relations, advertising research will be. MAS 434: FILM THEORY AND AESTHETICS (Prerequisite; Introduction to film, Cinema and Literature and Film Production) This course explores film as an extension of photography. It is a systematic consideration of the basic aesthetic principles, photographic approach, affinities and art. Analysis of the properties of the film medium with regard to the realistic tendency and formative tendency, or realism (as exemplified by the Lumiers brothers) and expressionism (as exemplified by Merlie), and the clashes/ compromises between both. The course touches the issue of film/cinema as an art. MAS 436: COMEDY FILM WRITING AND PRODUCTION This course analyses comedy as a form of drama and the ingredients of comedy. The nature of laughter and what makes people laugh. It is designed to teach students how to write comedy script and essence of punch lines. The course also delves into the techniques of comedy writing and production for the cinema. MAS 438: FILM PRODUCTION FOR TELEVISION This course is an overview of the television industry and relationship of film to television. Establishing contact with television station and network and arranging co-production meeting. Meeting the deadlines and resolving artistic conflicts.
