Integrated Forest-Pasture Management: why, how and what is ahead? Practitioners Workshop hosted by GIZ Project Community-based management of walnut forests and pasture in Southern Kyrgyzstan and Regional Pasture Network (RPN) November 28-29, 2017, Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan Integrated management of agro-silvo-pastoral resources to link rural people to modernity Andrea Pardini University of Florence (Italy)
Integrated management of agro-silvo-pastoral resources to link rural people to modernity Andrea Pardini University of Florence (Italy) President MSc Natural Resources Management for Tropical Rural Development
Urbanization + land abandonment Common trend all over the world Year % Rural (World) (? ) (? ) 34 % Rural (Kirghizistan) Although fluctuations related to economical phases The general trend is set.
What do we loose? Quality food Environmental control Biodiversity and future industries Social identity and cultural diversity Part of biological diversity
Why do people abandon marginal areas? Two groups of reasons : Outbreaking reasons Wars - civil wars, Major epydemics. Gradual social changes Search of wealth and modern life.
Money is not enough : People want higher incomes + services : Higher quality of life: - nurseries, - school, - medical care, - transport means, - connections, - social occasions.. Rural people : - they seek modernity, - with respect of their traditions.
Can modern agronomy alone stop or reverse this trend? No!. 1) The best increase in productivity will be 5-10 times, Not enough to change lifestyle and search for wealth. 2) Wealth from industrial activities increases much faster than from agriculture (A-S-P). Industrial cycles and machinery can be forced, natural cycles and productivity has limitations.
Is there a solution for these people, else then migration? Maybe yes : If we can integrate rural people to the rest of the world.
Concept of agro-silvo-pastoral system. Organization of resources and techniques to optimize the management of crops, forest and pasture on a sustainable base.
Concept of : Integrated agro-silvo-pastoral system Kind of system Resources Conventional simple Conventional medium Conventional complex One resource (specialized Agri, Silvo, Pastoral) Two resources (A+S, S+P, A+P) Three resources (A+S+P) Integrated Conventional complex + links
Examples of Integrated Systems in some Countries Farm tourism - Tourism in natural sites (trekking, horseback riding, meals, bedding) Quality foods (biological, minor crops, lost crops) Educational farms (services for school classes) Social agriculture - Medical care (Easy jobs for retired people) Handkraftery linked to farms (better valorization of local wood) Associated products (honey, medicines, spices)
Multiuse in not industrialized countries : Nature tourism Handkraftery in farms Associated products
Integrated systems (agriculture + services) Example in Italy : In 2009 =15,700 agro-tourism farms, In 2017 = 22,453 In 2009 = 12,000,000 day-presences, In 2017 = 18,000,000 In 2009 = 410,000,000 incomes (883 millions with yearly turn-over) In 2017 = 627,000,000 (about 1,000 M with turn-over)
This means : integration of resources favours development, We need integrated management of the territory. A question to you : Where do you expect better integration of agriculture with the rest of the economy? Pic 1 Pic 2?
Specialized land use : selective management
Diversity of land uses : Integrated management
Thank you. University of Florence - DISPAA - andrea.pardini@unifi.it
