1 Quantifying Variable Rainfall Intensity Events on Seasonal Runoff and Sediment Losses from Strip and Conventionally Tilled Peanuts C.C. Truman 1 *, T.L. Potter 1, and R.C. Nuti 2 ABSTRACT The majority of peanut prodution in Georgia is in the Coastal Plain region where sandy soils and relatively high rainfall (,1250 mm/yr) provide a favorable environment for the rop. Coastal Plain soils have traditionally been ropped under onventional tillage praties; and are suseptible to runoff, sediment, and hemial losses from short duration-high intensity, runoff produing storms. We quantified infiltration, runoff, and sediment losses from a Tifton loamy sand managed under onventional- (CT) and strip- (ST) tillage systems and planted to peanut at three times during a growing season with simulated rainfall that utilized variable rainfall intensities representative of eah time period (spring, summer, fall). In 2008, a field study was established with CT and ST systems eah planted to singlerow peanut. Simulated rainfall was applied at planting, 30 days after planting, and after peanut harvest with rainfall events omprised of variable intensity (I v ) patterns representative of eah time or season (spring5i vspr, summer5i vsum, fall5 I vfall ). Simulated rainfall was applied to 6-m 2 plots (n53) for eah treatment with runoff (R) and sediment (E) yields measured from eah plot. Overall, runoff and infiltration from CT and ST plots was 9 22% and 78 91% of the total rainfall applied, respetively. The most runoff ourred from CT-I vfall plots; the least from ST-I vsum plots. Sediment yields from CT and ST plots ranged from kg/ha. The most sediment ourred from CT-I vspr plots; the least from ST- I vsum plots. The most runoff and sediment per unit of rainfall applied ourred from CT-I vfall plots. Rainfall intensity and runoff from CT and ST plots for I vspr,i vsum, and I vfall events were orrelated (r ). Runoff and sediment yield from CT and ST plots for I vspr,i vsum, and I vfall events were also orrelated (r ). Values of R max for CT and ST plots were 7 20% of the maximum intensity for their respetive I v events. Values of R max and E max for CT and ST plots ourred 3 8 min after the maximum intensity for their respetive events. Maximum differene between CT and ST plots for runoff (2.4-fold), R max (2.7-fold), and sediment (3.8-fold) was for I vfall events; maximum differene between CT and ST plots for E max (5.6-fold) was for I vsum events. Results show the pronouned effet of three rainfall intensity patterns and tillage on runoff and sediment losses from ritial times (planting, first fungiide appliation,30 days after planting, after harvest) during a peanut growing season. Understanding the magnitude of runoff and sediment losses help define windows of risk and how onservation tillage an redue those losses and help produers manage natural resoures and agrihemial losses from peanut ropping systems. Key Words: erosion, rainfall partitioning, rainfall simulation, peanut prodution. Peanut prodution is vital to the Georgia agriultural industry, both eonomially and as a rotational rop for traditional row-rop produers. Georgia aounts for 49% of the peanut prodution in the U.S., with planted areages averaging 231,000+ ha annually ( ) (Georgia Peanut Commission, 2010). The majority (.90%) of peanut prodution in Georgia ours in the Coastal Plain region. The highly-weathered, sandy soils and relatively high rainfall in this region are generally favorable for the rop. However, these soils, traditionally ropped under onventional tillage (CT) praties, tend to be drought-prone, and are suseptible to runoff, sediment, and hemial losses. Rainfall in the Coastal Plain (,1250 mm/ yr) tends to have short duration-high intensity, runoff produing storms espeially at ritial times during the growing season when anteedent water ontent is high and/or soil over (residue, anopy) is none to minimal. Also, limati onditions an yield extended drought periods during the rop growing season, thus, peanut prodution generally inludes supplemental irrigation to minimize yield limiting water stress. Conservation tillage (strip tillage, ST) adoption in the Coastal Plain region of Georgia has Peanut Siene (2012) 39:
2 RUNOFF AND SEDIMENT LOSSES FROM PEANUT PRODUCTION 63 inreased beause ST systems aumulate residue and organi arbon at the soil surfae, whih dissipates raindrop impat energy and inreases soil resistane; thus maintaining infiltration and reduing runoff, soil detahment, and sediment transport (Reeves, 1997; Truman et al., 2005; Truman et al., 2007; Truman and Nuti, 2010; Truman et al., 2011). However, studies have reported less runoff from CT systems than ST systems, espeially 1 3 yrs after ST adoption due to inreased onsolidation (NeSmith et al., 1987; Radliffe et al., 1988; Soileau et al., 1994; Cassel and Wagger, 1996). Consequently, paratilling, a non-inversion, deep tillage tehnique, is often used in ST systems to disrupt dense, water-restritive subsurfae layers. After fall paratilling in 2007, bulk densities for ST were as muh as 31% less than those for ST prior to paratilling at the study site desribed herein. Disrupting these layers with paratilling redues bulk density, inreases infiltration, and redues runoff (Truman et al., 2005; Truman et al., 2007). In the Coastal Plain region of Georgia, it is generally reommended that land managed in ST and planted to peanut be paratilled in the fall prior to planting peanut the following spring. Frequeny of severe rainfall events has inreased throughout the U.S., inluding the Southeast, mainly in the form of inreased intensity of extreme rainfall events (Nearing et al., 2005; Todd et al., 2006). Changes in rainfall intensity within a storm affet how rainfall is partitioned (infiltration, runoff) and sediment and hemial transport (Potter et al., 2010; Truman et al., 2007; Truman et al., 2011). In the Coastal Plain region of Georgia, data are limited on effets of peanut ropping systems on runoff and sediment yields. Truman & Williams (2001) used simulated rainfall (I563.5 mm/h) to evaluate runoff and soil loss from single- and twinrow peanut systems as a funtion of anopy over onditions. They found that single-row planted peanut had as muh as 3-times more runoff and soil loss than twin-row planted peanut. Twin-row planted peanut maximized peanut anopy development and perent soil over early in the growing season and minimized the time in whih bare soil is vulnerable to a runoff produing rainstorm. However, they did not evaluate peanut prodution under strip-tillage nor with variable rainfall intensity patterns that ommonly our throughout the growing season. Our objetive was to quantify runoff and sediment losses from a Tifton loamy sand managed under onventional- (CT) and strip- (ST) tillage systems and planted to peanut at planting, 30 days after planting, and after harvest. Materials and Methods The 1-ha field site was loated near Tifton, GA (N 31u 269, W83u 359) on a Tifton loamy sand (Typi Kandiudult; 82% sand, 7% lay; 2% slope), whih represents over 762,000 farmable ha in the Coastal Plain region of Georgia. The site has been managed under CT and ST systems in a otton (Gossypium hirsutum)-peanut (Arahis hypogea) rotation sine 1998 (Potter et al., 2010; Truman et al., 2011). The CT onsisted of fall disking, drilling a winter rye (Seale erale) over rop, followed by spring disking, turning with a moldboard plow, field ultivator levelling/onditioning, and bedding. Rye surfae over was inorporated m. The ST onsisted of planting a winter rye over just after rop harvest in the fall and killing the rye hemially 30 days before planting the next year s row rop. All ST plots were paratilled (depth5,30 m) in the fall (11 Otober, 2007) prior to the 2008 peanut growing season. With ST, a 10-m wide strip was tilled and used to plant the rop into. In 2008, this site was ropped to single-row peanut (planted 12 May, 0.9 m row spaing). Surfae residue over for CT and ST were,1 and 50%, respetively. Rainfall simulation plots (2-m wide, 3-m long) were established on eah treatment ombination at three ritial times during the 2008 peanut growing season: May (freshly tilled seedbed ondition at planting); June (first fungiide appliation with minimal anopy over); and Otober (tilled/disturbed soil surfae immediately after harvest with peanut hay distributed bak over bed). Eah 6-m 2 plot onsisted of a wheel trak and two half beds on either side of the wheel trak. Anteedent water ontent (w) was determined gravimetrially (Gardner, 1986) from samples taken in three loations around eah 6-m 2 plot just prior to simulating rainfall (0 2 and 2 15 m depths). Simulated rainfall was applied with an osillating nozzle rainfall simulator (Truman et al., 2011) that used Veejet nozzles (2.3-mm median drop size). The simulator was plaed 3 m above eah 6-m 2 plot. Simulated rainfall was applied at three variable rainfall intensity (I v ) patterns: a spring time variable intensity pattern used at planting (I vspr ); a summer time variable intensity pattern used at the first fungiide appliation (I vsum ); and a fall time variable intensity pattern used just after peanut harvest (I vfall ) (Fig. 1). Data from the I vspr pattern have been reported previously (Potter et al., 2010). Variable rainfall intensity patterns were developed from measured 5- and 1-min natural rainfall data (30 yrs) olleted at Tifton, GA. Natural rainfall during the spring (Marh, April, May),
3 64 PEANUT SCIENCE distribution) were used to determine signifiane among treatment means using SigmaStat 3.1 (Systat, 2004). All test statistis were evaluated at P50.05, unless otherwise noted. Simulated variable rainfall intensity patterns evaluated. summer (June, July, August), and fall (September, Otober, November) were analyzed to determine respetive patterns that ourred most frequently during eah 3-month season. Parameters (I max, time to I max, Preip max, duration) were averaged for the group of natural storms ourring most often during eah 3-month season. For eah season, the individual storm with the most parameters similar to the average of the entire group of storms was seleted and its pattern programmed into the simulator on a 1-min basis as the representative I v pattern for that 3-month season (I vspr for spring; I vsum for summer; I vfall for fall). Rainfall duration for the I vspr, I vsum, and I vfall patterns was 70, 70, and 60 min, respetively. Average rainfall I during the I vspr,i vsum, and I vfall patterns was 56, 30, and 36 mm/h, respetively. Maximum rainfall I during the I vspr, I vsum, and I vfall patterns was 160, 102, and 132 mm/h, respetively. Total rainfall volume applied to eah 6-m 2 plot was repeatable (avg. I vspr 561 mm, CV53%; avg. I vsum 530 mm, CV53%; avg. I vfall 536 mm, CV52%). Irrigation well water was used in all simulations. Runoff (R) and sediment (E) were measured from the down slope end of eah 6-m 2 plot at 5-min intervals throughout eah simulation, and determined gravimetrially. Infiltration (INF) was alulated by differene (rainfall-runoff). The parameter dinf was alulated by differene (maximum INF minimum INF). Estimates of days of water for rop use for I vsum events were alulated from INF values for eah tillage treatment and an assumed evapotranspiration value (6 mm/day). Treatments onsisted of two tillage systems (CT, ST) and three rainfall intensity patterns (I vspr, I vsum, I vfall ). Means, oeffiients of variation (CV, %), and standard error bars are given for measured data (n53). Unpaired t-tests (two-tailed Results and Disussion Spring (I vspr ) event. Runoff and infiltration from CT and ST plots was 11 13% and 87 89% of the total rainfall applied, respetively (Table 1); no signifiant differenes were found for runoff or infiltration parameters for CT and ST treatments. In previous studies, runoff from CT plots (avg.536% of rainfall applied) was 2.3- to 5.1-fold greater than that from ST plots (avg.510% of rainfall applied) (Truman et al., 2007; Truman and Nuti, 2010; Truman et al., 2011). Relatively low and similar water ontents of the top 15 m soil depth for CT and ST plots, espeially the 0 2 m layer (w5,1.0%), ontributed to similar runoff yields from CT and ST plots. The sandy Ap horizon (82% sand, 0 30 m) of the Tifton loamy sand allows water to infiltrate quikly to less permeable subsurfae horizons. Porosities for the Ap horizon were 10% greater than those for the argilli (Bt) horizon (30 51 m); hydrauli ondutivities for Ap and Bt horizons were 5 15 m/h and m/h, respetively (C. Truman, D. Bosh, unpublished data). Infiltrating water is baked up during a rainfall event as it reahes the Bt horizon, effetively dereasing infiltration and generating runoff. Amount of water in the Ap horizon when rainfall starts affets how muh additional water it an hold before infiltration is dereased and runoff starts. Relatively low water ontents at the beginning of I vspr events yields less water in the Ap horizon, thus more infiltration and less runoff ours. Sediment yields for I vspr events ranged from kg/ha (Table 1). The CT plots had 2.2- fold more sediment than ST plots. Runoff (Fig. 2A) and sediment (Fig. 2B) urves for CT and ST plots had similar shapes as the I vspr pattern. After 15 min of rainfall, runoff and sediment rates inreased sharply until eah reahed its peak. Maximum 5-min runoff (R max ) values for CT and ST plots were similar (Table 1), and were 14 18% of the maximum intensity (160 mm/h) for the I vspr event. Maximum 5-min sediment (E max ) values and R max values ourred 5 8 min after the maximum intensity for the I vspr event (20 min). Values of E max for CT plots were 78% higher than those for ST plots. From 40 min until the end of the I vspr event, runoff and sediment urves dereased at a muh lower rate. Summer (I vsum ) event. Runoff and infiltration from CT and ST plots was 9 14% and 86 91% of the total rainfall applied, respetively (Table 1). Sediment yields from CT and ST plots ranged from kg/ha. The CT plots had 54% more runoff and 3.7-fold more sediment than ST plots. Runoff (Fig. 3A) and sediment (Fig. 3B) urves for CT and ST plots had similar shapes as the I vsum pattern. After 45 min of rainfall, runoff and sediment rates inreased sharply until eah reahed its peak. Values of R max for CT and ST plots were 12 20% of maximum intensity (102 mm/h) for the I vsum event; R max and E max values for CT and ST plots ourred 3 4 min after the maximum intensity for the I vsum event (47 min). Values of R max and E max for CT plots were 64% and 5.6-fold higher than those for ST plots. After reahing respetive R max and E max values, runoff urves delined at similar rates and sediment urves delined at different rates until 60 min. Peanut anopy over during the I vsum event averaged 10% (,30 days after planting), and influened runoff and sediment losses, espeially ombined with surfae residue over on ST plots. Fall (I vfall ) event. Runoff and infiltration from CT and ST plots were 9 22% and 78 91% of the total rainfall applied, respetively (Table 1). Sediment yields from CT and ST plots ranged from kg/ha. Runoff (Fig. 4A) and sediment (Fig. 4B) urves had similar shapes as the I vfall pattern. After 25 min of rainfall, runoff and sediment rates inreased sharply until eah reahed its peak. Values of R max for CT and ST plots were 7 19% of maximum intensity (132 mm/h); R max and E max values for CT and ST plots ourred 6 8 min after the I vfall peak (27 min). Values of R max and E max for CT plots were 2.7-fold and 3.9-fold higher than those for ST plots. After reahing respetive R max and E max values, runoff and sediment urves delined at different rates for the remaining I vfall event duration (60 min). Runoff rates gradually delined never reahing a steady-state rate; Sediment rates from 40 to 60 min were low, like those for this 0 25 min time period. Comparing events, the most runoff ourred from CT-I vfall plots; the least from ST-I vsum plots. Sine eah seasonal event had different rainfall volumes and/or durations, we ompared Fig. 4. For runoff, maximum and minimum amounts ourring from CT-I vfall and ST-I vsum plots were the same whether omparing runoff with units of mm/h or expressed as a perentage of rainfall applied. The most sediment ourred from CT-I vspr plots; the least from ST-I vsum plots. When data were expressed as sediment loss per unit of rainfall applied, the greatest loss ourred from CT-I vfall plots, despite having 1.8-fold less sediment than CT-I vspr plots. Thus, CT-I vfall plots yield the most runoff and sediment per unit of rainfall applied among treatment ombinations evaluated. Runoff and sediment yields for this study are ompared to those of Truman and Williams (2001) to see if differenes in runoff and sediment losses exist between onstant and seasonal, variable intensity patterns during similar times during the peanut growing season (Table 2). Note all omparisons are
6 RUNOFF AND SEDIMENT LOSSES FROM PEANUT PRODUCTION 67 for CT and single-row peanut treatments on a Tifton loamy sand; Truman and Williams used onstant intensity (I563.5 mm/h) simulated rainfall, whereas the urrent study used variable intensity simulated rainfall representative of eah season (spring, summer, fall). Runoff (% of rainfall applied) from Truman and Williams was fold greater than the urrent study, exept for fall in whih runoff from both studies were similar. The highest runoff from the Truman and Williams study was from the summer season (26 30 days after planting); highest runoff for the urrent study was from the fall season (after harvest). For sediments, similar sediment yields are reported from both studies for the spring season. However, sediment yield from the Truman and Williams study was 11-fold greater for summer than the urrent study; yet the urrent study reports sediment yields that are 2.4-fold greater than those from Truman and Williams for the fall season. Data indiate that differenes in runoff and sediment yield omparisons between the two studies were due to the respetive rainfall intensity patterns used in eah study. Truman et al. (2007) also found differenes in runoff, sediment, and arbon transport between onstant and variable intensity simulated rainfall, and reported the impliations of their results on model preditions of runoff, sediment, and agrihemials. For the Tifton loamy sand, transport relationships mostly determine measured sediment yields. Runoff urves had similar shapes as rainfall intensity patterns for all I v patterns studied. Correlation values (r) for intensity vs. runoff from CT and ST plots for I vspr,i vsum,andi vfall events were 0.91, 0.94, 0.93, 0.91, 0.73, and 0.95, respetively. Sediment from the Tifton loamy sand is suseptible to deposition due to transport-limiting onditions (large sediment sizes and/or low runoff transport apaity) during a rainfall event, whih influenes measured sediment. Correlation values (r) for runoff vs. sediment yield from CT and ST plots for I vspr,i vsum,andi vfall events were 0.99, 0.94, 0.91, 0.92, 0.66, and 0.82, respetively. These r values dereased as w inreased. Tillage impated runoff and sediment amounts and rates for I vspr,i vsum,andi vfall events. Striptillage redued runoff for I vsum,andi vfall events, and sediment losses for all three events. Over all events, CT plots (,1% residue over) averaged 60% more runoff, 86% higher R max values, 3.3-fold more sediment, and 3.7-fold higher E max values than ST plots (50% residue over). Residue over assoiated with ST effetively redued surfae sealing (Baumhardt et al., 1993; Alberts and Neibling, 1994; Potter et al., 1995; Baumhardt and Lasano, 1996). For the I vspr event, CT plots had dinf values (117.8) that were 6% greater than those for ST plots (110.9) (P50.026). Thus, CT plots experiened more surfae sealing than ST plots, yet surfae sealing did not signifiantly hange rainfall partitioning harateristis. Values of dinf were not alulated for I vsum events beause of peanut anopy over present (,10%); they were alulated for I vfall events, but no signifiant differenes were found between CT and ST plots (86.0 vs. 87.8). Infiltration differenes among CT and ST for I vsum events (,30 days after planting) are important to the peanut rop in terms of water availability during the summer months of the growing season when daily air temperatures routinely exeed 32uC (90uF) and rainfall an be sporadi. If one assumes that all infiltration from the I vsum event for CT and ST plots is available for rop use and an evapotranspiration value of 6 mm/d, days of water for rop use an be alulated for CT and ST treatments. For the I vsum event, CT and ST plots had 3.6 and 3.9 days of water for rop use (0.3 d or 8% differene; P50.008). The 1.4 mm of water or 0.3 days of water for rop use differene is for just this one event, and ould make a differene in water stress levels and/or irrigation timing, and/or osts, espeially given the porous surfae horizon and low water holding apaity of the Tifton loamy sand. Summary and Conlusions We quantified runoff and sediment losses from a Tifton loamy sand managed under CT and ST systems and planted to peanut at three times during the peanut growing season (at planting, 30 days after planting, after harvest). Rainfall simulation events with variable rainfall intensities (I v ) representative of eah time period (spring, I vspr ;summer,i vsum ;fall, I vfall ) were used. We found that over the three seasonal events, runoff and infiltration from CT and ST plots was 9 22% and 78 91% of the total rainfall

The most sediment ourred from CT-I vspr plots; the least from ST-I vsum plots. On a per unit rainfall applied basis, the most sediment ourred from CT-I vfall plots. Thus, CT-I vfall plots yield the most runoff and sediment per unit of rainfall applied among treatment ombinations evaluated. Runoff and sediment urves for CT and ST plots had similar shapes as orresponding simulated rainfall patterns. Rainfall intensity and runoff from CT and ST plots for I vspr, I vsum,andi vfall events were orrelated (r ). Runoff and sediment yield from CT and ST plots for I vspr,i vsum, and I vfall events were also orrelated (r ). Values of R max for CT and ST plots were 14 18% of the maximum intensity (160 mm/h) for I vspr events, 12 20% of the maximum intensity (102 mm/h) for I vsum events, and 7 19% of maximum intensity (132 mm/h) for I vfall events. Values of R max and E max for CT and ST plots ourred 5 8 min after the maximum intensity for I vspr events (20 min); 3 4 min after the maximum intensity for I vsum events (47 min); and 6 8 min after I vfall events (27 min). Strip-tillage redued runoff for I vsum,andi vfall events, and sediment losses for all three events. Over all events, CT plots averaged 60% more runoff, 86% higher R max values, 3.3-fold more sediment, and 3.7- fold higher E max values than ST plots. Maximum differene between CT and ST plots for runoff (2.4- fold), R max (2.7-fold), and sediment (3.8-fold) was for fall events; maximum differene between CT and ST plots for E max (5.6-fold) was for summer events. Frequently ourring rainfall intensity patterns that our during ritial times (planting, first fungiide appliation,30 days after planting, immediately after harvest) during the peanut growing season influenes infiltration, runoff, and sediment yields. Our results show the pronouned effet of the three rainfall intensity patterns and tillage on runoff and sediment losses from those periods during the peanut growing season. Understanding the magnitude of runoff and sediment losses help define windows of risk and how onservation tillage an redue those losses and help produers manage natural resoures and agrihemial losses from peanut ropping systems.
