Why is reseeding so important? Value of Reseeding Good grass leys can contribute hugely to lowering production costs. A typical medium term ley produces more energy per acre than a high yielding crop of feed wheat in each of its first 4 years. As a sward ages however, its yield and quality decreases significantly. This is caused largely by the ingress of lower yielding, lower quality weed grasses. The table below shows how the energy yield from a grass ley changes over time and how this can lead to increased feed bills. Age of Sward (Years) Ryegrass Content (%) Yield (DM/ha) Herbage ME (MJ/kg DM) Lost ME Grown (MJ/ha) Milk equivalent of lost ME (litres/ha) Concentrate cost to replace lost ME ( /Ha) ,320 1, ,200 4, ,260 7, ,600 9,849 1, ,400 12,226 1,279 Source: AHDB Dairy 1

Value of Reseeding Value of Reseeding Chart Studies carried out at Teagasc Agriculture and Food Development Authority in Ireland have shown that increasing the proportion of annual reseeding leads to an increase in herbage production. This enables stocking rates to be increased, improving overall farm profitabilty as shown in the chart below. Grass Utilisation (Kg DM/Ha) Proportion of Farm Reseeded (%) Net Profit (c/l) Grass DM Utilised (kg/ha) Net Profit in Euro Cents per Litre (c/l) Source: Shalloo et al 2011 Benefits of Reseeding Energy: new grasses have a higher ME when grazed or cut. ME values are directly related to improvements in liveweight gain and milk production. Digestibility: new leys are more digestible, increasing feed efficiency and intakes. Palatability: new mixtures are more palatable, especially if there is a high inclusion of tetraploid grasses, meaning livestock will eat more. Disease resistance: better disease resistance in newer varieties increases yield and palatability. Drought tolerance: tetraploid grasses are deeper rooted than diploid grasses. Matrix Enhanced Ryegrass has a larger root mass than a conventional ryegrass. Increasing the content of either will reduce susceptibility to drought. Fertiliser use: new leys will show a higher yield response to nitrogen. Reseeding also gives the opportunity to restore or increase levels of nitrogen fixing clover. Extended growing season: leys containing Matrix Enhanced Ryegrass grow at lower temperatures, meaning earlier turnout and extra autumn grazing. 2

Seed Quality In the UK there are two quality standards of grass seed. Many grass mixtures only meet EU minimum quality standards. Some mixtures adhere to the Higher Voluntary Standard which has more stringent purity requirements. It is our aim to supply Monarch leys at quality levels that exceed both of these standards. Purity EU Quality Monarch Quality Pure Seed 96% 98% Inert Matter 3.2% 2% Weed Species 0.8% Trace A 13KG ACRE BAG FROM OTHER GRASS SUPPLIERS COULD CONTAIN OVER 0.5KG OF INERT MATERIAL AND WEED SEEDS! 6 How to establish a New Ley Follow these steps for successful grass establishment 1. Resolve poor drainage and check soil structure for compaction. 2. Take a soil sample to assess ph and nutrient levels. Grass and clover require a ph as close to 6.5 as possible. Use DEFRA s fertiliser manual (RB209), or obtain advice from a FACTS qualified advisor to calculate additional required nutrients. 3. Choose a suitable sowing date. Availability of moisture and soil temperature are the key factors. Typical drilling dates would be: Spring: March-April for grass swards April-May for grass and clover swards Autumn: August-September for grass swards July-August for grass and clover swards 4. Prepare a firm, fine, weed-free seedbed. 5. Ring roll prior to seeding to aid a firm seedbed, conserve moisture and minimise drill depth. 6. Apply seed using a harrow/seeder or by direct drilling. Seed can also be broadcast and lightly harrowed. Seed should be no deeper than 6mm. 7. Roll again to ensure good soil to seed contact. 8. Carefully monitor for signs of pest attack during the early establishment phase. 4

Seed Treatment HEADSTART GOLD Get your grass off to a flying start FASTER ESTABLISHMENT HIGHER PLANT NUMBERS STRONGER SEEDLINGS HEADSTART GOLD is the latest in performance enhancing treatment for all types of grass seed. Developed using the latest scientific research and field experience, HEADSTART GOLD is an improved version of the well-recognised HEADSTART treatment. HEADSTART GOLD is a biological germination accelerator which uses a combination of enzymes, seaweed extracts and micro nutrients to stimulate root formation, development and growth. A stronger root system during the seedlings critical start-up phase leads to better access to moisture and nutrients; which in turn produce stronger, more stress resistant plants. 8 LG Animal Nutrition What is LG Animal Nutrition? The LG Animal Nutrition accreditation is used to denote varieties and mixtures that deliver superior nutritional value, whilst maintaining excellent agronomic qualities and yield. Independent trials conducted by leading scientific institutes have shown clear increases in animal performance using LG Animal Nutrition products. More Efficient Production Feeding grass with improved quality allows producers to maximise efficiency and reduce production costs. Animal feed, whether in the form of bought in concentrates or home grown forage, makes up a significant proportion of production costs. Increasing the nutritional quality of this feed helps increase milk and meat production. 6

LG Animal Nutrition Animal Feeding Trials Work carried out at the Schothorst Research Institute in the Netherlands in 2013, compared a group of cows fed a diet including a high quality LGAN grass mixture, with a second group fed a control dual purpose mixture. The group of animals fed the LGAN mixture produced an additional 1.4 litres of milk per day. This increase in production is worth an additional 84 a year, per cow herd, at a milk price of 20 pence per litre. Schothorst Institute Animal Feeding Trials 2013 Control Dual Purpose Mixture Dual Purpose Mixture 5% Higher Feed Efficiency 5% More Milk An Extra 84 Per Cow Feed Efficiency Milk production per kg fed Milk Yield Litres per cow per day Extra Milk Per Cow Per Year Assuming 300 milking days Extra Profit Per Cow Per Year Assuming 20p per litre litres 29.9 litres +420 litres + 84 Forage Quality Trials Dartington Forage Quality Trials 2014/15 Low Feed Value Control Intensive Benefit Compared Mix Grazing Mix to Control Mix Dry Matter Yield (t/ha) Energy Content (% ME) Energy Yield (MJ/Ha) 134, , ,694 In 2014 and 2015, grass mixture trials were carried out at NIAB TAG in Dartington, Devon. LGAN grass mixtures were tested to determine their forage quality under conservation and simulated grazing regimes, compared with a control mixture consisting of varieties selected from the Recommended List, shown to be of poor nutritional value in Limagrain forage quality trials. 10% Higher Energy Yield More Sugar and Digestible Fibre An Extra 970 per Ha The results clearly show that there can be a huge difference between the energy value of different grass mixtures, and that using Recommended varieties is not a guarantee of forage quality. The LGAN mixture produced significantly more energy per year than the low feed value control mix. An additional 25,694 MJ/Ha is equivalent to an additional 4,848 litres of milk worth 970/Ha, at a milk price of 20 pence per litre. 7

Cutting Mixtures John Roe, Barrow on Humber - Lincolnshire John Roe runs a pedigree dairy herd of 160 Friesians and finishes 250 beef cattle a year within a stone s throw of the south bank of the River Humber. Although not an area renowned for grass, John has developed a system that relies on high yields of top quality grass silage grown from the Monarch Maxiyield mixture. We can get five cuts of silage a year, says John, who now houses his cows year round and feeds first cut through summer, then uses the next three or four cuts for the winter diet. We grow grass as part of our rotation, sowing it after winter barley. We ve grown Maxiyield for the past few years. It grows very quickly giving a thick sward early in the season, then plenty of regrowth. First cut is early here typically around 10 May and John is keen to take it before it heads. The first three cuts are clamped and the next cuts are baled and wrapped. Maxiyield really seems to suit our free draining land, he adds. We don t graze the aftermath we find the grass grows better and we get higher yields if we leave it. Top quality silage is especially important here not only for the milking cows but also for the beef cattle that arrive on the farm. We typically buy in beef cattle from Cumbria and we like to feed them on grass silage for the first few weeks, gradually weaning them onto cereals. They ve been used to a grass based diet and this high quality grass silage suits them well there s no check in their performance. John has seen milk yields improve since moving onto Maxiyield his herd now averages 8800kg of milk despite cutting back on bought in feeds. We ve reduced concentrate feed and relied more on home grown forage, and our Maxiyield grass silage is certainly contributing to the cows performance. 14

The mixture establishes well the ley I reseeded in September 2014 was quick to emerge and we had good coverage before the winter. It was ready for some slurry by February and I took a first cut in mid May, a second in early July, followed by a third at the end of August. The mixture yields well and I know I m going to have a clamp full of good quality forage to feed to my 290-cow dairy herd. I m going to stick with Monarch for my future reseeds. Diploid Ryegrass 23% 17

Grazing Mixtures MAXIGRAZE LONG TERM 100% high sugar tetraploid grasses make this long term grazing mixture one of the best designed, no-compromise mixtures available in the UK today. Roger Pomeroy, Holsworthy, Devon My two fields of autumn reseeded grassland one sown with Maxicut and the other using Maxigraze both performed well this spring and summer. I ve used both mixtures before, so I knew they d establish easily and that I d be able to graze and cut the swards, come the spring. My 160-cow dairy herd took a first bite from the Maxigraze reseed in April. I took two cuts from the Maxicut sward and have also grazed it. The grass quality and yields were good and I ll be using both mixtures again for future reseeds. Tetraploids offer high D values and palatability to improve milk production and liveweight gain Deep root system gives good drought tolerance Larger seeded varieties and vigorous growth enhance establishment and make Maxigraze perfect for overseeding White clover content boosts protein and fixes atmospheric nitrogen 3.0kg 3.0kg 3.0kg 3.0kg 1.0kg Drift LPRG (Tet) Novello LPRG (Tet) Xenon LPRG (Tet) Twymax LPRG (Tet) Ensign Plus WC Blend Pack size: 13kg Tetraploid Ryegrass 92% WC 8% 18

Dual Purpose Mixtures Ron Stainthorpe, Lythe, Whitby I reseeded a grass field with Monarch Graze and Cut in September. It established quickly and looked really well all winter. I was able to graze beef cattle on it the following April and I also took a cut of silage from that field in June, after a light dressing of fertiliser. Yield and quality both looked good the silage is in big bales, so I ll find out just how good it is this coming winter. I don t do an awful lot of reseeding on my beef finisher unit, but when I do some more, I ll most definitely be using Graze and Cut mixture again. 24

GRASSLANDS CHOICE exhibits long season growth, only becoming dormant at near-freezing temperatures. Management Drill into warm, well drained soils (10 C) at a depth of about 10mm. Sow at 3-6kg/acre straight or 1-4kg/acre in a mixture with grasses and clover. Can be sown in herbal strips or blocks, rather than throughout the ley, to simplify management. Please note; that topping may be required to prevent bolting. Best rotationally grazed. Re-grazing should only be undertaken when 2 to 4 leaves per plant have fully re-grown. Herb Mix Mixed Herbs are a valuable addition to grazing mixtures, allowing their rooting systems to draw up minerals and trace elements, essential to the diet of sheep and cattle. Include at 1kg per acre 30% Sheeps Parsley 35% Chicory 10% Ribgrass 25% Burnet 100% 32

Other Key Crops RED CLOVER Red clover offers the opportunity to reduce reliance on purchased concentrate feeds, due to its big yields of very high protein forage. Sown straight or as part of a mixed grass/clover sward, red clover can produce up to 4 cuts a year with quality aftermath grazing. Like other leguminous plants, red clover also fixes atmospheric nitrogen, helping to bring down fertiliser costs. Why Grow Red Clover? High yields of protein rich forage Predominantly used for silage but can also be grazed Much higher yielding than white clover Reduces N fertiliser use Improves soil structure Drought tolerant Sowing rate 5-6 kg/acre straight. 3kg/acre as part of grass/clover mix. Red Admiral Red Clover Blend Red Admiral is a blend of diploid and tetraploid red clover varieties with a range of flowering dates, that has been proven to deliver consistently high yields for three harvest years. Red Admiral is included in CLOVERCUT (see page 16). 33

Other Key Crops WHITE CLOVER White clover is the most important forage legume currently grown in the UK. Whether you are milking dairy cows, fattening cattle or feeding sheep, this flexible species has an important part to play in the ley mixtures on your farm. White clover has the potential to improve the quality of any leys cut and conserved as silage or grazed in the field, whilst also fixing atmospheric nitrogen - reducing fertiliser costs. Why Grow White Clover? High quality feed High protein and digestibility Rich in minerals Increased voluntary intakes and animal performance Good drought resistance and mid-season growth Can fix over 160kg/ha of nitrogen Reduced N fertiliser use Improves soil structure Sowing rate 1kg/acre as part of grass/clover mix 34

Other Key Crops WHITE CLOVER BLENDS Why Grow White Clover Blends? Ensign Plus White Clover Blend Ensign Plus is a carefully designed white clover blend included in many mixtures in the Monarch range. It includes specially selected small, medium and large leaved clover varieties, making the blend suitable for a range of management types. This blend of varieties ensures optimum establishment, persistency and growth through the season. CloverPlus Pelleted White Clover Blend Overseeding clover into an existing ley has become a very popular method of improving productivity and CloverPlus is the perfect product for the job. CloverPlus is a white clover blend, coated in a pellet and treated with HEADSTART GOLD. This unique product offers several significant benefits: The pellet increases the weight and size of the seed, making equipment calibration easier and giving a more consistent spread pattern if broadcast. The added weight ensures greater numbers of seed get down through the existing sward to give maximum soil/seed contact. In dry conditions, the pellet will protect the seed until there is sufficient moisture for germination. HEADSTART GOLD seed treatment speeds up germination, giving young plants the best opportunity to compete with the existing sward. Sowing rate 2kg/acre. 35

Other Key Crops LUCERNE Lucerne provides good yields of highly nutritious silage and is particularly useful in relatively dry conditions. Lucerne is very high in protein and minerals and its comparatively lower cell wall content means lucerne is highly digestible with high intakes. Why Grow Lucerne? High protein forage Drought tolerant Four cuts per year possible 3 to 5 year potential Suitable for silage, big bales, hay or zero grazing Fixes atmospheric nitrogen Please contact us for a copy of our comprehensive lucerne growers guide Management Lucerne can be sown from April through to August though later sowings carry a greater risk of establishment failure, due to cooler weather and winter kill. Seed should be treated with a Rhizobium inoculant to ensure root nodulation and efficient nitrogen fixing. Sow at 8-15kg/acre into well drained soils with a neutral ph. Lucerne will not tolerate waterlogged or acidic soils. Drill into moisture in 10cm rows, no deeper than 1cm. First cut will usually be in late April/May with subsequent cuts at approximately 40 day intervals. 36

Organic Mixtures No.1 ORGANIC FERTILITY BUILDER This mixture of Italian and hybrid ryegrasses, along with highly productive red clover, will not only boost soil fertility but will also help increase soil humus levels, over the course of two years. 20% Organic Italian Ryegrass 30% Organic Italian Ryegrass (Tet) 20% Organic Hybrid Ryegrass (Tet) 30% Red Clover Blend Pack size: 25kg Sowing Rate: 13-16kg/acre 37

Organic Mixtures No. 2 ORGANIC GRAZING This grazing mixture differs from conventional mixtures in that it has a high white clover content and a more open sward, which enables the clover to thrive. The mixture also contains mid and late season perennials - including some very palatable tetraploids. No. 3 ORGANIC CUTTING This 4+ years organic mixture has been designed to give that slight edge to silage quality at each cut. The choice of varieties with close cutting dates mean all grasses are at their optimum quality, at the same time. Despite its name, Organic Cutting mixture also doubles up as a good quality grazing mixture in mid summer, with leafy grass regrowth. 10% Organic Intermediate Perennial Ryegrass 10% Organic Intermediate Perennial Ryegrass (Tet) 20% Organic Late Perennial Ryegrass (Tet) 30% Organic Late Perennial Ryegrass 20% Late Perennial Ryegrass 10% White Clover Blend Pack size: 25kg Sowing Rate: 13-16kg/acre 40% Organic Intermediate Perennial Ryegrass 20% Organic Intermediate Perennial Ryegrass (Tet) 10% Organic Late Perennial Ryegrass (Tet) 20% Late Perennial Ryegrass 10% White Clover Blend Pack size: 25kg Sowing Rate: 13-16kg/acre 38

Organic Mixtures No. 4 ORGANIC GENERAL PURPOSE This long term organic ley mixture is highly versatile, being well suited to a range of soil types and growing conditions. Organic General Purpose will produce high quality silage from one or two cuts with aftermath grazing. Conversely, if used as a grazing ley, the white clover blend will enhance digestibility, as well as inputting soil nitrogen. Organic General Purpose is suitable for all classes of livestock. No. 5 ORGANIC LONG TERM (low Input) This mixture utilises a range of species which will thrive in lower fertility conditions and less favourable soil types. Meadow fescue can, for example, outyield ryegrass in lower fertility soils and timothy will often produce more palatable herbage than perennial ryegrass when grown on wetter, heavy soils. This mixture is ideal for land that you would prefer not to plough too often. 20% Organic Intermediate Perennial Ryegrass 25% Organic Intermediate Perennial Ryegrass (Tet) 10% Intermediate Perennial Ryegrass 15% Organic Late Perennial Ryegrass 10% Late Perennial Ryegrass (Tet) 10% Organic Timothy 10% White Clover Blend Pack size: 25kg Sowing Rate: 13-16kg/acre 25% Organic Intermediate Perennial Ryegrass (Tet) 15% Organic Late Perennial Ryegrass (Tet) 15% Late Perennial Ryegrass (Tet) 15% Organic Late Perennial Ryegrass 15% Organic Timothy 5% Meadow Fescue 10% White Clover Blend Pack size: 25kg Sowing Rate: 13-16kg/acre 39

Together we have worked with a number of farmers to help increase productivity and profitability through changes to how they establish and maintain grassland leys, and use agricultural inputs cost-effectively. Dairy Farmer, Dave Richards of Ridgend Farm near Worcester In a bid to boost milk production from forage from his 250 cow herd, Dave Richards overseeded silage fields with Maxiyield to increase DM production. The decision to keep high yielding cows indoors all year has further increased the demand for silage, so last years barley crop was undersown with Hymax. Grazing land will be the next target for improvement either through overseeding or full reseeds.
