4 RCUK China; now and the future Our relationship with Chinese funders has gone from strength to strength We now have joint research programmes in full partnership with MoST, NSFC and CAS The research programmes we have supported cover a wide range of areas including: Energy, Health and Life Sciences, Environment and Food Security, Green Growth and Cities, Creative and Digital Economy Since 2011 JC China and UK have jointly funded 31 research projects with a joint investment of 27 million bringing the total joint research investment to 76 million We signed a ground breaking joint agreement with NSFC in December 2013 to establish biennial strategic meetings, building on this substantial relationship
5 Newton Fund: RCUK The Newton Fund will support programmes and projects across agreed priority areas. These are likely to include: PROGRAMME; joint research on development topics; TRANSLATION; challenge funds to develop innovative solutions on topics of interest to China and the UK; PEOPLE; student and researcher fellowships and mobility schemes; science and innovation capacity building. Developed in partnership with relevant ministries and agencies in China Many of the activities will be cross cutting and involve interdisciplinary and cross sector approaches
6 Programme Building on the good relationship we have with MoST and other Chinese agencies, we are scoping joint programmes in a range of possible areas including; Health Infections in vulnerable populations Neurosciences Chronic disease Regenerative medicine and stem cells Social sciences and humanities Green economy and understanding populations Centre partnerships in the Social Sciences Copyright and Creative Economy
7 Programme Food and environment Environmental applications in space and sensing technologies Sustainable fisheries Sustaining the soils ecosystem services Agricultural science for food security including major wheat and nitrogen initiatives Marine energy Translational centres in food biology Infrastructure development and access Central Laser Facility ISIS and the China Spallation Neutron Source Astronomy and telescope access MICE ionisation cooling experiment Square Kilometre Array
8 Building on current success Discussions are already underway with NSFC to prepare for the launch of a further series of joint calls in areas including; Low carbon Innovation Atmospheric pollution and mega-cities Soil science We are also working on bringing together the best research groups in the UK and China to develop high quality and high impact research partnerships A joint centre with the John Innes Centre and the Institute of Genetics and Development Biology and Shanghai Institute of Plant Physiology and Ecology, CAS is close to being announced The Centre for Ecology and Hydrology is developing links with the CAS Centre for Eco-Environmental Sciences
9 Translation and People Research Councils UK; Excellence with Impact Developing impact from research for the benefit of society and the economy is central to the RCUK mission and we operate a number of approaches to promote translation Look forward to working closely with the TSB and Chinese partners, including in further development of the Science Bridges approach Core competence in postgraduate training RCUK is the biggest single funder of PhDs in UK HEIs.
