AREAS OF POSITION RESPONSIBILITY Extension 60% responsibility The goal of my extension program is to extend unbiased, research-based information through key partnerships to help farmers and agribusiness professionals responsibly manage corn and soybean management practices using a holistic cropping systems approach that takes into account productivity, profitability, and environmental goals. Research 20% responsibility My research program is focused on how to holistically manage Iowa cropping systems to achieve productivity, profitability and environmental goals. Research is centered varied aspects of soybean, corn and cover crop management as well as agronomic implications of precision technologies. Teaching 20% responsibility AGRON 591, Agronomy Systems Analysis, 3 credit; this course is designed to integrate elements of all previous coursework through the use of decision case studies. The course is developed to provide a holistic perspective of an agroecosystem and recognizes that an agroecosystem is influenced by biological, economic, and social factors. Critical thinking and communication skills are developed through evaluating the agronomic and financial aspects of a farming system in order to identify components that can be changed and to understand the consequences of that change to the farming system. AGRON 594, Practicum in Agronomy, 1 credit; this course provides practical field and laboratory experience integrating coursework in climatology, crops, and soils. The course is one of the few opportunities students come to campus and interact with faculty and resident graduate student in the department of Agronomy and other related disciplines. The course includes lectures, laboratory activities, field activities, and tours of local research trials to provide active, engaged learning that encompasses and integrates previous course within the program. AGRON 490, Independent Study, 2 credit, upon request; offered in the fall of 2017 for one undergraduate student. The student conducted a research project on his farm and developed a 5-page report to present and discussion his findings. Masters and doctoral students, current Mitch Baum, M.S.
