MINISTRY OF NEW AND RENEWABLE ENERGY CENTRE FOR WIND ENERGY TECHNOLOGY Presented by R. Sasi Kumar Scientist, SRRA, C-WET 3 rd CSP Today India Summit, New Delhi(14 15/03/2012) 3/14/2012 1
Renewable energy in India Among the renewables, wind energy occupies first with an installed capacity of about 16 GW as in December Ranked 5 th in worldwide wind installation capacity. MNRE/CWET has carried out dedicated wind resource assessment at more than 650 locations covering the entire country. Indian Wind Atlas has been published by MNRE/CWET in collaboration with RISO,Denmark. 3/14/2012 2

Solar Energy-JNNSM Solar Energy has great potential in India as future source of energy. India is a tropical country endowed with vast solar energy potential. Government of India initiated Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM) program in 2009 to provide ecologically sustainable growth. Major objective of JNNSM is to establish India as a global leader in Solar Energy. 3/14/2012 4
JNNSM Highlights Create favorable condition for solar manufacturing capability. Promote off grid/decentralized application of solar energy thereby empowering the people at grass root level. Technological innovations(r&d) to drive down costs towards grid parity. R&D-Detailed mapping of ground solar insolation particularly in high potential solar regions. Create conditions through rapid scale up of capacity. 3/14/2012 5
JNNSM.. Application segment Solar collectors Off grid solar application Utility grid power, including roof top Target for Phase I ( ) 7 million sq. meter Target for Phase 2 ( ) 15 million sq. meter Target for Phase 3 ( ) 20 Million sq. meter 200 MW 1000 MW 2000 MW MW MW MW 3/14/2012 6
Solar irradiation data availability Information on Solar Radiation over India is provided by the well received and widely utilized two volumes Handbook of Solar Radiation Data for India and Solar Radiation over India. First volume contains the results of measured values maintained by India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the second one gives derived values based on various meteorological parameters. Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, in 2003 updated the Handbook of Solar Radiation Data for India with the latest data for the period Purpose of these volumes were to provide a database for the designers of systems for harnessing the solar energy received at a place. Very limited measured solar radiation data is available for the country. 3/14/2012 7
IMD -Solar Radiation measuring network. 3/14/2012 8
Why measurements. Solar irradiance data at a place could be measured or the satellite data. computed from Actual measured data is more accurate but is a costly. A combination of measured data and satellite data help to have a better knowledge of high solar energy potential areas of the country. Establishment of dedicated Solar Radiation Resource Assessment (SRRA) stations is thus important. SRRA stations assess and quantify the ground level data on solar radiation. 3/14/2012 9
Solar radiation map of India 3/14/
Implementation In 2011, under JNNSM a SRRA Program was sponsored by MNRE and implemented by C-WET, Chennai. An exclusive Solar Radiation Resource Assessment Cell has been established at C-WET. 51 SRRA Stations in 10 States and 1 Union Territory was commissioned in A Central Receiving Station (CRS) has been established at C- WET. Data from SRRA stations are transmitted to the CRS through GPRS mode of communication. 3/14/
