1 CONTROL OF PESTS WITH ALTERNATIVE CHEMICALS TO METHYL BROMIDE FOR POLYETHYLENE MULCHED TOMATO S. J. Locascio 1, D. W. Dickson 2, and TA. Kuchareck 3. Departments of 'Horticultural Sciences, 2 Entomology and Nematology and 3 Plant Pathology, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL Abstract: With the identification of methyl bromide as a chemical that allegedly contributes to the depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has established regulations that call for the phase-out of methyl bromide in the U.S. by January In the production of most polyethylene mulched crops such as tomato, pepper, eggplant, and strawberry the use of methyl bromide for control of soil pathogens, weeds, and nematodes is essential for economic production. In this study, various soil fumigants and combinations of chemicals were evaluated as alternatives to methyl bromide for drip irrigated polyethylene mulched tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) at two sites (Horticultural Unit and Green Acres) in Gainesville during the springs of 1994 and Preplant soil injection of chloropicrin (Pic) at 390 kgha 1 or dichloropropene + 17% Pic (1,3-D + Pic) at 327 L ha' provided good to moderate control of nematode and soil fungi control of three of the four studies. The addition of pebulate at 4.5 kgha' to the two treatments provided nutsedge suppression and total fruit yields in three of the four studies similar to that provided by methyl bromide-pic treatments (98-2% at 450 kgha' and 67-33% at 390 kgha' ). Other treatments evaluated that did not provide adequate pest control and tomato production included metam-sodium at 935 L ha 1, tetrathiocarbonate at 1870 L ha a and dazomet at 450 kgha'. In these studies, no alternative pesticide or groups of pesticides provided the consistent control and production as provided by methyl bromide. 291
