Well-come & Namaste Promoting Nutrition Through Organic Manure [MI] in Banke District of Mid-west Nepal International Conference on Nutrition Sensitive Agriculture Feb, 2018 Kathmandu, Nepal BB Hamal Nutrition in Mountain Agro-Ecosystem Fine Smart International Consultancy Everest Organic Agro Farm

Why producing organic manure started? The local communities in the district have very poor knowledge on nutrition sensitive agriculture and importance of nutrition for their health as well as nutrition values of crops. Earlier, most HHs in the settlements has trend to grow & take nutrition rich food and vegetables in their daily meal. Few HHs (except employers/traders etc.) used to buy vegetables, which are poor quality production in terms of nutrition and harmful for health because of worst commercial practices around border area (mostly covering by Indian produces). Most of the HHs had nutritional foods/diet and people have totally depend on market (Who are taking veg. & other foods), which are poor or/and negative nutritional values. That s why to solve such problems this action has been started and going on.

Proposes of Selecting the theme Develop capacity of women/local community for producing & using organic manure ( Especially Vermi compost during initial phase) and organic pesticides for promoting Nutrition & nutrition sensitive agriculture. Build capacity of women/local community to grow nutritional vegetable and other crops in their kitchen garden aswell asregular consuming habits. Prepare local community people to reduce and gradually left to use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides [Through comparing the nutritional values of organic produces/farming & disadvantages of chemical produces/farming.]

Where it has been Implemented/implementing? Location: Nepalgunj City/Banke dist./providence No. 5/Nepal Distance:600 KM (South-West) from Kathmendu Time to reach: About 1 Hr. by Air & about 14 Hrs. by land vehicle Coverage: 34 HHs Ward No.: 18 [16 HHs] Ward No.: 20 [18 HHs] No. of MI: 2 No. of RSP Involving: 2 1. BB Hamal 2. Ashok Thapa

How did we do it? Oriented Concernedstakeholder (personnel from local bodies, DADO, Health, I/NGOs, community key personsand selected settlement for implementing the MIs. Such orientation were conducted in districtand ward levels. Provided training on producing organic manure & nutrition sensitive farming in their kitchengardens.

How did we do it? Linked the MI with concerned govt. unit (DADO) and ensured the cost sharing from DADO and selected HHs for completing the activities planned under MIs. Prepared vermi-compost pits (semi-permanent structures) and managed organic wastes and worth worm for producing manure. Developed and distributed a brochures (IEC Mat.) and distributed to target beneficiaries and wider ranges.

How did we do it? Build capacity of women/hhs on production, uses of organic manure and pesticides as well as management of kitchen gardens and linked with DADO and Municipality for regular technical backup and support. No. of interaction meetings and BCC on nutrition in district level as well as applying MAANplatform,half/annual review meetings etc. were carried out. Program monitoring and Supervision by Agriculture Department KTM, Regional Agriculture Directorate, DADO and other concerned stakeholders. Conducted baseline and end line survey for measuring changeswere done.

Program monitoring and Supervision by Agriculture Department KTM, Regional Agriculture Directorate, Surkhet, DADO Banke, Journalists and other concerned stakeholders. How did we do it?

Achievements from the pilot phase Out of 34 semi-permanent pits, 30 are well operating [producing manure and organic seasonal & off seasonal vegetables], so far the consumption of nutritional diet has been increased.

Achievements from the pilot phase Farmer s/hhs who have vermi-compost, totally detached from chemical manure and pesticides. We got success for applying model of cost sharing practices (From DADO around NPR 100 thousands and from HHs level around NPR 70 Thousand had been contributed in completed MIs). The initiation has itself recognized in all level (from grass root to national) able to established multi-stakeholder collaboration and coordination in local level. So far, other farmers/hhs are demanding and local bodies are also ready for their support if needed. Program monitoring and Supervision by Agriculture Department KTM, Regional Agriculture Directorate, DADO and other concerned stakeholders; all of them appreciated the beginning of sustainable organic farming/kitchen garden having good nutrition values. Increased users of MAAN platform at least by 80 person in the district. Some of them are usual to use the platform.

Next steps and envision 1. Continue production of organic manure and organic vegetable by existing HHs and expand it to new HHs in wider level. 2. Advocate and lobby to local body and other concern agencies for making policies and supporting integrated approach of promoting nutrition. 3. Establish a model farm for commercial organic manure production along with training and coaching services. 4. Coordinate with Everest Organic Agro farm and other like-minded org./institutes for producing vegetables (Tomato, chilli etc.) and link local small farmers for organic produces and ensure market (sustainability), 5. Promote integrated and diversify farming with at least one cow in each HH and ensure their food diversification, linking with media regularly & so on
