2 Do you know that The agriculture sector constituted 11.9% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Provided employment to about 32.5% of the labor force. 29% of the total land area of the country is cultivated. 1.8 million families are engaged in agriculture. 70% of the farming families cultivate holdings of less than 30% of the total paddy land. 16 Goals & Objectives Goals Accurate diagnosis of field problems in crop management Timely solving the field problems by taking necessary actions Objectives Reduce the time spent for data collection Efficient & effective data analysis Timely decision making support & early warning strategies Information dissemination as quick as possible Increasing the quality of the elicited data Increase the regional level contribution in crop surveillance
17 Project Scope Data collection about these pests & diseases through conducting field surveys Analysis of the collected data and generating required reports, graphs and maps Scope of e-paddysurv Detection of outbreaks through processing the collected data Send early warnings through the system about those detected outbreaks to the authorized personnel.
18 Research Questions What is the best method to collect data about paddy pests and diseases? What are the most cost effective technologies that can be used in outbreak detection in paddy crop surveillance? What is the most practical way to disseminate information on early warnings to the farmers in the Sri Lankan context? Which strategies should be used in crafting the most feasible and applicable solution to the scenario?
19 System Stakeholders Field Officers (Data collection about field problems) Agro Consultants (Entering the collected data to the system) System Stakeholders PPS Officials (Data analysis and decision making) Farmers (Receive early warnings on field problems)

43 Limitations & Difficulties Faced Infrastructure Limitations Economical feasibility Develop using open source software Deficiency of hardware & networking infrastructure The government officials and farmers should be well equipped with computers and mobile phones Time Constraints The scope has been narrowed down to be Completed during one year Data samples in the surveys are restricted to Anuradhapura district Information were gathered only from a limited number of farmers and agro officers Technological Constraints Provide a well simplified and usable system Getting the Involvement of farmers in the research process Lack awareness & experience in ICT among farmers & agro officers
44 Conclusion Rice paddy cultivation receives the highest attention in the agriculture sector in Sri Lanka. Two of the main problems which hinders increasing rice production are the insect pests and plant diseases. This study evaluates the existing methods available for minimizing the spread of pests and diseases in Sri Lanka. It proposes a GIS based system named e-paddysurv, to carry out the crop surveillance in paddy cultivation much more efficiently and effectively. Also it intends to eliminate the farmer difficulties and upgrade their living standards in developing countries.
45 Thank you for your attention!!!
