DADTCO Operations OUR MISSION IS TO CREATE THE CASSAVA REVOLUTION IN AFRICA DADTCO cassava processing company was founded in the Netherlands in Its shareholders are people with Africa experience who share the belief that economic growth comes from private businesses with the aim to improve the income standards of African farmers. Through its unique cassava processing method, DADTCO aims to accelerate the economic development of the smallholder cassava farmers in Africa. DADTCO has the ambition to become the largest cassava processor on the continent. The DADTCO business model is based on the Mobile Starch Plant. The Mobile Starch Plant brings cassava processing close to the growers, turning the cassava DADTCO has operations in Nigeria, Mozambique and Ghana with its support office in Dordrecht, The Netherlands. All local operations consist of: mobilising teams in the field taking care of the roots supply, an operations team running the plant, logistics for getting the roots to the plant, an administration team for track & trace and finances and a quality control team who guarantee foodgrade standard by continuous testing in our local laboratories. roots into a food grade starch product and avoids the need for costly transportation of the perishable cassava roots over long distances. Cassava is an edible starchy root crop that generates the highest carbohydrates yield per cultivated area of all food crops. The root can stay in the ground for up to 2-3 years but starts to deteriorate as soon as it is harvested. Cassava has a growing cycle of 9-12 months with high yields of 10 to 60 MT per Ha. It can be planted and harvested throughout the year, is easy to grow, drought tolerant and requires low-input levels. It is ideal for Africa, the number one producing continent with Nigeria being the largest producer. DADTCO has the ambition to become the largest cassava processor in Africa. 2
Cassava gives the highest yield of carbohydrates per cultivated area of all food crops. Cassava; Africa s best kept secret Cassava has many advantages for starch production such as: high level of purity; excellent thickening features; a neutral bland taste and desirable texture characteristics Although cassava has many prospects, yields remain low in Africa in the absence of a guaranteed market. DADTCO has developed a unique mobile cassava processing technology The three main obstacles for the industrialisation of cassava across Africa are: its high water content (65%- 75%), the rapid perishability of the roots once harvested (must be processed within 24 hours) and its bulky and irregular shape. These factors combined with the widely scattered smallholder cassava farmers, contribute to the barriers of high transportation costs, large post-harvest losses, and challenging logistics. DADTCO has developed a Mobile Starch Plant which overcomes these obstacles. This patented technology, based on proprietary knowledge of roots and tubers food grade processing systems, allows the starch plant (which is completely self-contained, requiring only a water source) to be located in the middle of the cassava production areas. 3
If the farmer can t come to the factory, let s take the factory to the farmer. THE MOBILE STARCH PLANT The Mobile starch plant consists of: a wet processing unit called AMPU, a mobile refinery unit and a mobile dryer. The Mobile starch plant is equipped with its own power source and extracts released starch from the cassava roots with negligible losses (<2%), maintaining the highest possible quality of the food grade product starch II. The Mobile starch plant moves from location to location (or platform to platform) to collect the cassava harvest of the local farmers. It remains in one location for 3-4 months, processing the harvested cassava in that vicinity. During this period, the planting of the new crop is overseen and monitored, only to return to that same location the following year to repeat the annual cycle. The Mobile Starch Plant s production capacity is 5 MT cassava roots per hour, the annual capacity depends on daily operating hours and shift configurations. At maximum capacity one mobile unit can process up to 24,000 MT of roots per year. The optimal cassava product: DADTCO Starch II The Mobile starch plant draws its raw material from the traditional rural cassava growing regions where roots are readily available and competitively priced. The mobile concept significantly improves the sustainability and continuity of the supply chain. DADTCO processes close to the cassava growers to guarantee same-day processing 4
From left to right: Cassava Cake - DADTCO Starch II - DADTCO Cassava Flour The mobile starch plant matches supply with demand across the region. Within 24 hours after harvesting the roots are processed thereby reducing potential losses and preserving the integrity of the starch products. The Mobile Starch Plant processes the highly perishable cassava roots within 24 hours post-harvest into Cassava Starch Cake or Starch II. Cassava starch cake is an intermediate food grade product of dough-like consistency with a proven shelf life under normal ambient conditions of over 6 months. It contains 50% moisture and 48% starch. The starch cake is highly compact and therefore easy to transport by truck to a central flour/starch plant or brewery where it can be used as raw material for further processing of : - beer - commercial (native) cassava starch - starch derivatives - sugar syrups (glucose, maltose and fructose / iso-glucose), - bio-ethanol and many other starch based products. The second product Starch II is produced with the mobile dryer and contains 97% starch on Dry Matter Basis. The cassava starch cake is packed into sealed polyethylene sheaths of about 20 kg, which are loaded into pallet boxes holding about 25 sheaths (500 Kg), or into bulk of 500 kg or 1000 kg re-usable plastic lined big bags. Starch II is bagged in 20 Kg bags. PRODUCT FLOW DADTCO s R&D team has developed and patented an enzyme to produce 100% cyanide free cassava products. DADTCO s R&D team in Collaboration with RIKILT (Wageningen University) have validated the fluctuating and high presence of Linamarin, a cyanogenic component present in cassava. On the basis of this validation the team has developed and patented an enzymatic process to produce 100% cyanide free cassava products. The research was financed by the Peter Kutemann Fund, one of DADTCO s main shareholders. 5
DADTCO Flash Dryer In Nigeria DADTCO built and operates two centralised flash dryers with a design capacity of 30,000MT of Starch II. The cassava starch cake is dried into Starch II at a temperature of 180 degrees Celsius. The dried Starch II is milled in an industrial pin mill to less than 200 micron and subsequently cooled down to ambient temperature, sieved on tumbler sieves and bagged. DADTCO S SOLUTION: 6 ESSENTIAL TECHNOLOGIES 6
Roots supply DADTCO recognizes that it fully relies on the collaboration with its suppliers, the smallholder farmers. To build a business relationship DADTCO employs a large local field team and supports good agricultural practices for smallholder farmers. We have developed a supply chain around the needs of smallholders in Africa who are subsistence farmers, risk avert and who lack capital. SOCIAL IMPACT What makes DADTCO attractive for smallholder cassava farmers: - A guaranteed market (income) - A purchase agreement in which DADTCO obliges itself to purchase next year s harvest - A fair price for the roots - Cash payment upon delivery - The provision of an agricultural program in collaboration with research institutes, local and international agricultural NGO s - One Mobile Starch Plant generates a monthly flow of income between the $50,000 and $100,000 in the rural communities. The Mobile Starch Plant sources from farmer families Because each Mobile Starch Plant sources from farmers, we created a track & trace system. All our farmers are registered in our database and through GPS the production areas can be traced. This registration system enables us to closely monitor our farmers and production records. DADTCO & SABMILLER DADTCO has partnered with SABMiller plc, one of the world s largest brewers, to pioneer an innovative process to produce beer and use DADTCO s cassava starch cake in the brewing process. At the moment 70% of the malted barley is replaced with cassava starch cake. SABMiller plc started the first production ever of commercialscale beer using cassava in October The beer, Impala, brewed in Mozambique by SABMiller s local subsidiary, is a huge success. 7
