Damaging populations blown in from southern U.S.A Monitoring at 29 Sentinel sites in 2011 Catch any major migrations or buildups Mapping system on RTW Risk on a 3 week rolling total Color coded as cumulative total increases

49 fields in 12 municipalities Generally populations are low but there are still pockets of sawfly Dry years especially a dry August favors population increases Parasitism and solid stem wheat are major population drivers

Agricultural Fieldmen survey sites Peace has pockets of high populations Some high populations in north-central Alberta South and central Alberta generally low Risk is variable depending where you are Grasshopper populations are very weather dependant

AKA Orange Wheat Blossom Midge Increase this year Problem sites in southwestern Alberta Found throughout irrigated area but generally at low levels. 285 samples in 59 Counties Confirmed in Peace region Survey expanded

Emergence of the head from the boot Remains susceptible to anthesis Susceptibility drops dramatically at the onset of anthesis

Eurasian pest First found in Michigan in 1962 Generalist graminaceous feeder Prefers oats, wheat and barley CFIA Quarantinable pest Lifted in 2008

Discovered in Alberta July 2005 Has established so has parasitoid Limited damage in 2007 Lethbridge Area Scattered locations across S Alta and into Saskatchewan in Moderate damage in winter wheat near Lethbridge 2009 Some higher numbers. Found in Manitoba fields in Taber county treated 2011 discovered near Edmonton Several fields in south Alberta near threshold

Late season bloom 1 generation in canola Come into canola in early bloom as adults Eggs 5 nymph instars - adults 4 th and 5 th instars have wing buds The late instars and adults are damaging Race between lygus and crop maturity Assess after flowering Do not spray within 1 week of swathing Threshold 1.5 to 2 per sweep (15-20/10 sweeps) Not before flowering!!!!!!!

On Roping the Web Will rely on agrologist input Web based (cell phone friendly) input page Color coded by species Google map Mapped to center of a 2x2 township area THE IDEA IS TO CREATE A VISUAL WARNING SYSTEM

Aphids migrate in from USA Bring with them viruses Suction trap warning system Field agrologists report aphid infestations In the design stage Plan to roll out in summer 2012 Not map based graphical representation
