3 HISTORY The Northwest Potato Variety Development Program was created in response to the need to combine efforts of the USDA/ARS, state experiment sta ons and industry in developing and commercializing improved potato cul vars for the Pacific Northwest region. It is a cri cal program serving an area that produces more than half of all U.S. potatoes and provides the majority of potato exports. It was started in 1985 as a direct result of industry lobbying. At the me of the program s incep on, progressive USDA/ARS breeding programs were in place at Aberdeen, ID and Prosser, WA. Industry representa ves felt that funding levels and lack of personnel resources limited the ARS s ability to adequately evaluate the poten- al for advanced selec ons to be adopted by the processing and freshpack industries, while s ll providing a sufficient quan ty of breeding germplasm to sa sfy the region s needs. The original intent of stakeholders was to create a collabora ve Northwest research program that would allow the ARS scien sts to concentrate on basic gene cs and germplasm development, while ins tu ng an applied research effort to deliver increased numbers of new varie es to the Northwest potato industry. This became the start of the current collabora ve research effort also known as the Tri-State Potato Variety and Development Program that includes the coopera ve efforts of the USDA/ARS of Idaho and Washington, Oregon State University, University of Idaho and Washington State University as well as the potato commissions of the three states. Research scien sts work together with Experiment Sta on personnel in a coordinated program that has resulted in more than thirty new potato varie es being released since the program s incep on. In 2014, Tri State varie es represented over 25%, of the fall crop in the US*. (*NASS, Crop Produc on, Nov )

7 The primary goal of the Tri State program is to enhance compeveness of the Northwest potato industry by developing new varie es that can be produced and u lized more efficiently. Variety improvements to op mize (pes cide, fer lizer, water and energy inputs), and provide increased yields address consumer and industry requests for more sustainable produc on prac ces. Many new varie es have improved health characteris cs as a result of higher levels of nutrients and an oxidants, as well as lower acrylamide forming poten al. The development of variety specific management prac ces are quan fying reduc ons in inputs, carbon footprints, and improved economic returns. The available management informa on combined with improved potato varie es shared with producers, processors, buyers and consumers contribute to more sustainable potato produc on.

8 Tri State Potato Research and Breeding Program Tomorrow PVMI In 2005, the potato commissions in WA, OR, and ID launched the Potato Variety Management Ins tute (PVMI) to market and promote Tri-State potato varie es. It was developed as a non-profit, grower-controlled organiza on to provide the infrastructure so that resources by way of license fees and royal es for the new varie es could be put back into the research and breeding program. PVMI also serves to increase communica on and interac on with growers, processors and end users. PVMI s main mission is to promote new varie es of potatoes in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington and further afield. PVMI is helping to maximize the poten al success of new varie es by providing informa on regarding variety features and management to growers, and feedback to researchers. Since its incep on PVMI has returned more than $1.4million to the partners to support the Tri-State research and breeding program.
