1 Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) Spring Semester 2015 SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY 9:00 12:00 (Tue.) Class Room: NMH 112 Instructor: Tae Yong Jung Office Hour: By Appointment COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is designed to study and review the 25 years of global efforts to pursue sustainable development. Such efforts have developed the concrete three pillars (Poverty Reduction/Environmental Sustainability/Social Protection) of sustainable development. Especially, the United Nations (UN) has led to establish sustainable development knowledge and capacity for policy-makers, bilateral and multilateral agencies and civil society with local partners in developing countries. The course will explore the basic concept of environmental issues and problems and principles of environmental policies that contribute to achieving the global goal of sustainable development. It is critical to understand the real environmental issues that are complex and very challenging to tackle, find practical solutions. Students will be participating in the discussion and debate on the sustainable development and its environmental component. Special focus will be on the issue for developing countries, whose challenge is to harmonize the economic development and environmental conservation. Specific issues on climate change and sustainable development will be covered in depth. PREREQUISITES There are no specific prerequisites for this course. However, those who do not have economics background are encouraged to read any basic micro economics textbook for better understanding. EVALUATION
2 Each student (or a group, depending of the number of students in this class) will make a short Presentation (about mins.) on the relevant issues and topics in the fields of sustainable development and environment. Presentation material with references should be submitted. (PPT file is also fine.) Active participation in the discussion and debates during the class is highly encouraged.
