Salesian English School Mock Examination Form 5 Biology Date : 13 th March, 2003 Time allowed : 1 hour and 30 minutes Instructions: 1. Attempt THREE questions only. 2. Each question consists of three parts. 3. All questions carry equal marks. 4. In each question, 2 additional marks will be awarded for effective communication. 5. The diagrams in this paper are NOT necessarily drawn to scale. ******************************************************************************** 1(a) The diagram shows a foetus in the uterus shortly before birth. Name the membranous structure Z and state the function of it. (2 State TWO advantages of the foetus being surrounding by a watery fluid secreted by Z during development. (2 Blood vessels of mother do not join to the foetal blood vessels directly in structure X. Explain TWO significances about this. (2 Briefly describe how oxygen in the maternal blood passes into the foetal blood through structure X and reaches the body of foetus. (3 1(b) A small sample of fluid was extracted from four regions of the alimentary canal A, B, C and D. Each sample was placed into a small hole on a starch-agar plant, as shown the following diagram. After incubating at 37 C for 24 hours, the plate was flooded with iodine solution. Area A and C showed brown results. 1

Explain the appearance of brown areas after flooding the starch-agar plate with iodine solution. (3 (1) Name the enzyme involved for the reaction (1 mark). (2) The enzyme is not only found in region A. It is also found in the region C. Why is the enzyme also present in region C. (2 (1) What is the function of region D? (2 (2) If there is a bacteria infection in region D of a person, what will be the result? (1 mark) (3) What precaution must this person take especially the above infection occurred in hot summer? (1 mark) 1 (c) The graph below shows the number of cases of tuberculosis reported each year by the Department of Health in Hong Kong from 1985 to State the period in which the occurrence of tuberculosis shown an increasing trend. (1 mark) This disease is infected by breathing in tuberculosis bacteria from air. Explain how the works of cilia and mucus in our body can prevent the entry of them. (2 In Hong Kong, children receive vaccination against tuberculosis. What is vaccine and explain how vaccination can help to protect children from tuberculosis infection. (5 Explain how the improper use of antibiotics during medical treatment might have led to the increase in number of tuberculosis cases. (2 2

2 (a) An experiment was carried out to demonstrate anaerobic respiration in yeast as shown below: Write down the equation of the anaerobic respiration involved. (1 mark) Calculate the percentage increased in volume of the dough in (1) container A (2) container B (3 Suggest a reason for the difference in the volume of the dough after one hour. (2 To which group of organisms in classification does baker s yeast belong? State the common features of living organisms in this group. (2 2. (b) Figure below shows the structure of a heart. Explain why B has heart string attached on it but A without. (2 If a hole is found on C, what is the effect on the blood oxygen level in the body? (2 Assume that a red blood cell is coming from liver. (1) Which one of the five vessels (1 to 5) brings it to the heart? (1 mark) (2) After leaving the heart in the first time, which organ it will reach first? (1 mark) 3

Explain the significance of increasing heartbeat rate during vigorous exercise. (4 (v) In a class, some students have a lower pulse rate while some others have a higher pulse rate. But most of them have a rate around 72 beats/minute. According to the above information, state the type of this variation and give your reason (2 2. (c) The diagram below shows some animals that live in the soil and in dead leaves. They are not drawn to the same scale. Use the following key to identify the groups to which specimens B and E belong. (2 I No jointed legs.. Annelida Jointed legs.go to II II More than four pairs of legs Go to III Four pairs of legs or less.go to IV III Body divided into two main parts, legs not all alike..crustacea Body of similar segments, legs all alike.myriapoda IV Three pairs of legs Insecta Four pairs of legs.arachnida Using the magnification shown, work out the actual length of X of specimen C. (2 The relationship of some of the above specimens can be shown in the following food web. D B small animal A C grass (v) What are the relationships between A and B? (2 Name one organism in the food web that is both a primary consumer and a secondary consumer (1 mark) From the same biomass of grass, through which food chain would D obtain more energy? Explain your answer. (4 4

3. (a) The diagram shows the nervous relationship between the spinal cord and the arm. The parts are not drawn to scale. The arm responds when a needle pricks the hand as shown in the diagram. Name the type of receptor in this response. (1 mark) Give two reasons for considering this response as a reflex action. (2 Describe the correct sequence of events that lead to the response of muscle D. (4 In the same time, some nerve impulses were also sent to the brain. Which part of the brain is responsible for receiving the impulses? (1 mark) (v) When there is a cut at region X, what will be the effect on the ability of (1) feeling pain (2) contraction of muscle D (2 3. (b) The Air Pollution Index (API) is an indicator of the level of air pollution which is ranged from 0 to 500. This data illustrates the amount of pollutants in air which includes nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, respirable suspended particles The table below shows the monthly variations of the concentration of respirable suspended particles in air in a certain district of Hong Kong during Month Concentration of respirable suspended particles in air 3 ( µ gcm ) Suggest one main source of nitrogen dioxide in Hong Kong. State one effect of nitrogen dioxide on the human body. (2 An Air Pollution Index of 200 indicates a very high level of pollutants in air. Explain why people are advised not to do vigorous exercise outdoors when the Air Pollution Index exceeds 200. (2 Present the data in the table graphically. (3 Which season has the lower concentration of respirable suspended particles in air? Suggest a possible explanation for it. (3 5

3. (c) A student set up the apparatus shown below to investigate how tropisms affect the growth of a seedling. pulmule seed radicle What are the two main factors affecting the growth of radicle? (2 After a few days, the radicle grew upwards as a U shape. Draw a conclusion to compare the relative strength of the two tropic effects on radicle growth. (1 mark) Water is very important in seed germination. Give evidences to support this statement. (3 Explain the curvature of the pulmule observed in set-up on a hormonal basis. (4 4. (a) The diagram below shows a pedigree for the inheritance of short-sightedness, which is inherited by the Mendel s rule. Deduce, from the family of couple A and B, whether the allele for short sight is dominant or recessive. (Genetic diagrams are not acceptable). (5 Give the genotype for J and define the symbols used. (2 Individuals F and G are going to have another child. With the aid of a genetic diagram, predict the probability of this child having short-sightedness. (4 6

4. (b) The following diagram shows the lower surface of a leaf. (1) State the difference by comparing the cell wall of cell X and cell Y. (1 (2) How is this feature related to the function of cell Y. (4 Can you state another structural difference between cell X and cell Y? (1 mark) Under normal daylight conditions, what substances have a net flow out of an intact leaf through Z? (2 State and explain how the size of Z affects a plant in its rate of photosynthesis. (2 4. (c) Two similar plants were growing in normal soil, but under different environmental conditions. Give three environmental conditions which could make plant Y like this. (2 Describe what would have happened in plant Y which caused it to like this. (2 Draw a clear labeled diagram of a cell from a leaf of plant Y. (3 A gardener lives near the sea. On one stormy day his garden was flooded by sea water. Shortly after this, his plants wilted and looked like plant Y. Explain why. (2 *** End of the paper*** 7
