A decade ago, PMPs were challenged to join forces with BASF and look at termite control in a whole new way. Those who did have prospered, building profitable businesses specializing in termite control. The molecule patent for the active ingredient in Termidor expires later this year, but this patent is only one of more than a thousand global patents for Termidor that will continue to be in force for years to come, including patents for how the product is made and used. 5 the value of PERIMETERPLUS by Dr. Bob Davis Termidor termite treatment provides an excellent value for our industry. One of the most valuable termite control options for pest management professionals is a patented PerimeterPLUS treatment. PerimeterPLUS is the brand name for the patented Exterior Perimeter / Localized Interior (EP/LI) treatment uniquely specific to both the Termidor SC termiticide/ insecticide and Termidor WG termiticide/ insecticide labels. PerimeterPLUS is one of the most revolutionary changes to occur to liquid termite treatment options in Figure 1: Excellent efficacy was observed (100% control in 3 months the U.S. or less) with Exterior Perimeter / Localized Interior treatments. PerimeterPLUS is a post construction treatment that can be as efficacious as a full conventional treatment, but is less invasive, requires less material, less labor and less time. 7 Alpine Ant and Termite Foam by Dr. Kyle Jordan Ready-to-use foam provides many creative pest control opportunities. In 2009, BASF Pest Control Solutions launched a set of three Prescription Treatment brand Alpine products, Alpine Ant and Termite Foam, Alpine Pressurized Insecticide and Alpine Dust Insecticide featuring the active ingredient, dinotefuran*. Alpine Ant and Termite Foam gives pest management professionals many opportunities to get creative with their pest control. Pests Alpine Ant and Termite Foam has three main groups of pests on its label wood destroying insects (termites and several wood-infesting beetles), ants and occasional invaders. Biotec/Carter Services Larry Plecha of Biotec/Carter Services in Albuquerque, NM has found a variety of uses for Alpine Ant and Termite Foam. Plecha has found it extremely useful for treating gaps around heating ducts in slabs. Sometimes builders pour the slab directly around the ductwork for forced air systems, and over time the concrete separates from the metal ductwork. This created gaps that ants were exploiting as entry routes into the structure. Larry attempted control with a variety of products without much luck, but found that treating these spaces with Alpine Ant and Termite Foam practically eliminated ant activity. He indicated that this method was especially useful when a perimeter treatment was ineffective; due to either cold weather or that the activity was exclusively under the slab. Two other sites where Larry successfully used Alpine Ant and Termite Foam recently included a crack in the slab beneath a staircase that was otherwise inaccessible and the space between the kitchen cabinet floor and the floor of the kitchen (behind the toe kicks). In both areas, a liquid application would not have reached all of the surfaces necessary to control the ants, but because the foam was able to move around the pipes, it was able to coat the surfaces of the void. * Dinotefuran, the active ingredient in Alpine insecticides, has been granted Reduced Risk status for public health use by the EPA.
