5 PROFILE: JIM MALER State of Florida certified operator, for more than 30 years, in all four categories of pest control: 1) General Household Pest Control 2) Termite 3) Fumigation 4) Lawn and Ornamental. Managed a termite and pest control company serving Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Monroe Counties for 16 years, and taught classes for five years at the Annual School of Structural Fumigation in Fort Lauderdale. Worked for Terminix International for 3 years. Worked with Dow Agro Sciences and the Environmental Protection Agency, assisting with numerous research projects, field testing new equipment and procedures and performing various demonstrations and trainings. Served as Salesman, Sales Manager, Vice President and then promoted to President and Certified Operator of All Florida Pest Control. With AFPC for 13 years. Grew up in South Florida and has been part of many teams: Football and baseball for the University of Miami. Spent10 years playing professional baseball for the Seattle Mariners, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets, Texas Rangers and was in the Major Leagues with the Seattle Mariners for three years.

12 TERMITES Has your property been checked for termites? Termites cause more damage throughout the United States than all natural disasters, including hurricanes, floods and tornadoes. An annual property inspection is so important. If building or home is under termite warranty, make sure the company does an interior inspection every year.

15 DRYWOOD TERMITES Drywood Termite Damage Signs of a termite infestation: Wings and termite bodies around lights, doors and windowsills. Winged insects fluttering around lights, TV screens or computer screens. Termite droppings (that look like little balls of wood, sand or coffee grounds) around doors and windowsills. Pin holes in wood. Hollow sounding or weakened wood. Mature colony can have 3,000-5,000 members and eat a toothpick of wood a day. Treatment may include tenting of property and/or area spot treatment.

17 DRYWOOD TERMITES 2 MAIN TREATMENT METHODS FOR DRYWOOD TERMITES: 1. SPOT OR AREA TREATMENT: TREATMENTS LIMITED TO AREAS TREATED Surface Applications: Applying the termiticide (usually Termidor, Bora Care or Timbor) on infested wood with a brush, hand sprayer or power sprayer. Needle Treatment: Direct chemical injection of long-term residual termiticide into the galleries of termite-infested wood with needle type applicator. Foam Treatment: Localized area foaming applications inside termite galleries, walls and voids. Electro Gun Treatment: Sending an electric current into the termite galleries of the infested wood with a gun-like devise to kill the termites. Heat Treatment: Heating up the structure to a high temperature to kill the termites. Freeze Treatment: Cooling down the air temperature in a structure to a low temperature to kill the termites. 2. TENT FUMIGATION: ENTIRE STRUCTURE FUMIGATED Covering entire structure with a series of tarps held together with clamps, and pumping poison gas into the structure for an average of hours.

23 SUBTERRANEAN TERMITES Signs of subterranean termite infestation: Wings and termite bodies around lights, doors and windowsills. Winged insects fluttering around lights, TV screens or computer screens. Mud like tubes on the exterior of walls. Muddy holes in wood or drywall. Hollow sounding or weakened wood. Most destructive termites in the WORLD. Treatment may include liquid barrier and/or a baiting system.

A mature Native Subterranean Termite colony can have 300, ,000 members and eat a pencil of wood a day!

25 SUBTERRANEAN TERMITES TREATMENT METHODS FOR ALL SUBTERRANEAN TERMITES: SPOT or AREA TREATMENT: Only recommended in conjunction with one or both of the following treatments since these termites come from the ground. LIQUID BARRIER: Trenching and applying a chemical barrier completely around the structure with Termidor Termiticide or a similar termiticide. No quarterly inspections. BAITING SYSTEM: Installing bait stations every 15 feet around the complete structure. Quarterly inspections of the exterior, and monitoring and baiting the stations as needed. DUAL SYSTEM: A combination of the above treatments. Highly recommended when Formosan or Asian Termites are infesting the structure. TENT FUMIGATION: Would be rare except in the case of an aerial infestation that cannot be located or controlled in a structure. The fumigant rate is 4 times the termite rate, so it is very expensive.
