Can You Tell the Difference? Real Fake Cotton can be branded at the molecular level with DNA - the gold standard for forensic evidence accepted by courts globally.
Some Applied DNA Sciences (APDN) Facts APDN technology has been established since 2000 HQ and Labs based in Stony Brook, NY and labs in Yorkshire, UK Partnership in place with many research centers throughout USA and Europe Proven track record in the USA, UK and throughout Europe APDN technology is required by DoD to mitigate counterfeit for electronics
FiberTyping and SigNature Are Two Powerful Technologies To Identify and Prevent Counterfeits FiberTyping :Endogenous or intrinsic, DNA contained in plants remains unchanged through the entire life cycle, from seed to harvested cotton. SigNature DNA: An exogenous DNA or external mark is applied to raw cotton or fabrics. The presence of a specific DNA allows us to make the distinction between ELS and Upland cotton. SigNature provides anticounterfeit protection.
SigNature DNA 1. External DNA mark that is added to raw cotton, yarn or fabrics 2. Unique marks 3. Seamless 4. Safe
Creating a SigNature DNA Marker and Marking of Cotton P Botanical DNA DNA Segmentation SigNature DNA P Cotton Marking PCR Amplification ADNAS Mark Analysis using CEFLP Capillary Electrophoresis
Modes of SigNature DNA Binding to Textile I. Affixed binding: Direct Binding of DNA to Textile II. Linked binding: DNA Binding via Linkers or Binders
Direct Binding of DNA to Cellulose CH 2 OH H OH O H H OH O H H O H OH H O H O H OH CH 2 OH Cellulose n 1. DNA can bind directly to cellulose via many groups 2. DNA can bind indirectly to cotton via linkers 3. Cotton (95% cellulose) can react with DNA and form a stable bond
Marking and Authentication of Cotton ELS Cotton Simulate Ginning in the Laboratory SigNature DNA Mark DNA Formulation Mark Cotton with SigNature DNA Authentication I Wash Cotton Authentication II
Marking and Authentication Raw Cotton Unmarked Cotton Cotton Marked with SigNature DNA Cotton was successfully impregnated with SigNature DNA
DNA Binding after Test Wash Before Washing Water Wash Water and Alcohol Wash Water, Alcohol, and Solvent Wash 1. SigNature DNA remains bound to cotton even after the sequential washes with water, alcohol, and solvents 2. SigNature DNA is bound to the fibers proper and not to the natural wax coating
Marking Cotton at Industrial Scale
Detection of SigNature DNA in Early Phases of Cotton Production Sample 1: Drawing Sliver Sample 2: Combing Sliver Sample 3: Roving Sample 4: Yarn Spinning Sample 5: Greige Fabric SigNature DNA is detected in the early phases of cotton production
Detection of SigNature DNA in Late Phases of Cotton Production Sample 6: Half Bleaching Sample 7: Complete Bleaching Sample 8: White Dye Fabric Sample 9: Dark Dye Fabric SigNature DNA is detected in the late phases of cotton production and in the finished goods
SigNature DNA: Health and Safety 1. SigNature DNA is not mutagenic 2. SigNature DNA is not cytotoxic
FiberTyping 1. Endogenous cotton DNA that survived maturity and finishing process of cotton 2. Genotyping to distinguish between ELS and Upland
FiberTyping is Based on Genotyping ELS Upland Mature Cotton Identify Unique Sequences to ELS and Upland Genotyping PCR amplification ELS Mark Upland Mark ELS and/or Upland marks are identified Capillary Electrophoresis
FiberTyping : Endogenous DNA for Identifying Blended Cotton Fibers and Finished Fabrics Case 1: Upland Mark ELS Mark Blended Fabric Case 2: Upland Mark Upland Fabric With FiberTyping, blended cotton can easily be identified
In Summary I. SigNature DNA: 1. Binds robustly to various substrates. 2. Protects a wide variety of products such as textiles, microchips, fine art, etc 3. Resistant to vigorous treatments. 4. Stable and heat resistant. 5. Resistant to removal by friction or other aggressive treatments. 6. Secure: it is embedded, recovered and analyzed only by ADNAS proprietary methods. 7. Safe to use II. FiberTyping 1. offers a unique and powerful method for identifying blends
SigNature DNA and FiberTyping 1. Provides the mean to assure quality and performance 2. Does not impact on performance 3. Can mark cotton at any point of the manufacturing process 4. Scalable 5. Economical 6. Brand Protection throughout the supply chain
