Additional items Sentience Term hijacked by extreme animal rights movement We shouldn t be worried about using it for our industry Need to incorporate it The ability to feel, perceive and experience Ethics
What??? What is ethics? Why is this important for Animal Welfare? The SnG? The Australian pig industry?
What is Ethics? The branch of learning dealing with what s Good & bad Moral duty Obligation Organising, defending, & recommending concepts of right and wrong behaviour Defines concepts like Good & evil, right & wrong etc.,
Why is ethics important in this process? Animal welfare Is not about production If we look after our animals, they ll look after us What s right and wrong for the animal Needs to consider the big picture and other stakeholders.
Who are the stakeholders? Pig Industry Stakeholders Producers Companies that supply the pig industry Consumers General Community Animal welfare stakeholders Anyone who owns / cares for animals Involves groups with very different beliefs, values & ethics?
Different types of ethical frameworks Many different ethical frameworks that have been applied to animals Three most common Utilitarianism Animal Rights Principlism
Utilitarianism The good of a society is the total happiness of all the individuals in that society.
Utilitarianism The best action is the one that maximises utility or well-being The ethically right choice produces the most happiness & least unhappiness for for the largest number Underpins modern animal welfare legislation & regulation; policies of animal welfare organisations Weighting factors can be applied to compare animals vs people
Animal Rights Intrinsic rights and dignity The argument goes like this: Human animals have rights There is no morally relevant difference between human animals and adult mammals Therefore adult mammals must have rights too
Animal Rights No experiments on animals No breeding and killing animals for food or clothes or medicine No use of animals for hard labour No selective breeding for any reason other than the benefit of the animal No hunting No zoos or use of animals in entertainment
Principlism Focuses on the common ground moral principles of autonomy, beneficence (action that is done for the benefit of others-i.e. prevent/remove harms or to improving their situation), nonmaleficence (doing no harm), and justice Tends to be consistent or at least not in conflict with various approaches towards moral decision-making
Principlism Basis of the Ethical Matrix Decision support framework Help decision-makers (as individuals or working in groups) reach sound judgements or decisions about the ethical acceptability and/or optimal regulatory controls. Checklist of concerns, structured around established ethical theory. Can also be used as a means of provoking structured discussion.
Principlism The ethical dilemma Improved productivity in livestock Feeding a growing global population Simultaneously improve welfare/reduce environmental impacts No easy answer on how to balance conflicting needs
Respect For Producers Principlism & the Ethical Matrix Wellbeing (beneficience and nonmaleficience ) Autonomy (Freedom & Choice) Justice (Fairness) Pigs Community Environment
Respect For Producers Pigs Principlism & the Ethical Matrix Wellbeing (beneficience and nonmaleficience ) Income and working conditions Autonomy (Freedom & Choice) Freedom of action and farming Justice (Fairness) Fair trade and practices Community Environment
Respect For Producers Principlism & the Ethical Matrix Wellbeing (beneficience and nonmaleficience ) Income and working conditions Autonomy (Freedom & Choice) Freedom of action and farming Justice (Fairness) Fair trade and practices Pigs Animal Welfare Behavioural Freedom Intrinsic value Community Environment
Respect For Producers Principlism & the Ethical Matrix Wellbeing (beneficience and nonmaleficience ) Income and working conditions Autonomy (Freedom & Choice) Freedom of action and farming Justice (Fairness) Fair trade and practices Pigs Animal Welfare Behavioural Freedom Intrinsic value Community Food Safety & Quality of Food Democratic, informed choice Affordable food Environment
Respect For Producers Principlism & the Ethical Matrix Wellbeing (beneficience and nonmaleficience ) Income and working conditions Autonomy (Freedom & Choice) Freedom of action and farming Justice (Fairness) Fair trade and practices Pigs Animal Welfare Behavioural Freedom Intrinsic value Community Food Safety & Quality of Food Democratic, informed choice Affordable food Environment Conservation Maintenance of biodiversity Sustainabilty
Principlism At best, it helps those involved in making a decision to put themselves in the shoes of others. At the very least it ensures that more than the usual narrow range of concerns gets an airing. The interest groups, the weighting of each cell and even the appropriateness of the principles may all be challenged or modified by those using it.
