Sesión 3B: Iniciativas exitosas de bioeconomía en América Latina: Investigación y desarrollo. Building Bioeconomy at Embrapa
Antecedentes / motivación Embrapa always worked with bioeconomy How Bioeconomy is developing at Embrapa? Two examples: I) Embrapa Agroenergy and its program to develop the bioeconomy II) Passitec Network: Biodiversity, Science, and Collaboration
I - Embrapa Agroenergy Created in 2006 initially with a focus on biofuels but its mission has evolved through time. Motivation: Agroenergy develops technological solutions with a strong industrial component and needs partnerships Example: Biofuels production (needs an industrial plant) Answer: technology solutions are organized in a manner to promote products that are in an intermediate stage to find partners Vitrine Tecnológica da Embrapa Agroenergia Source: Embrapa Agroenergy (2017)
I - Embrapa Agroenergy In 2018, there are 34 technologies at an intermediate stage of development that constitutes Embrapa Agroenergy's technology solutions. The research center seeks partners for the next stages of work. There is a scale of development for monitoring and seeking partners Theoretical Model Lab tests Pilot Final stages/complete Embrapa participates in stages 1-7. Source: Embrapa Agroenergy (2017)
I - Embrapa Agroenergy - Research Areas Biomass for industrial Purposes Industrial Biotechnology Renewable Chemicals Source: Embrapa Agroenergy (2017) Renewable materials
I - Embrapa Agroenergy A new characteristic is that Embrapa Agroenergy is working with technologies that are in a intermediate stage, they are not finished. Open innovation: Embrapa Agroenergy is not responsible for all stages of production. Ethanol example: Embrapa will not have an industrial plant, it will collaborate with partners up to stages 6-7, and the partner will be responsible to reach final consumers. How partnership is build? Embrapa Agroenergy is proactive: participates in several meetings of the sectors and prospects opportunities. Partners interested in technological solutions in development can contact. Intern Process to officialize the partnership
I - Embrapa Agroenergy EMBRAPII Unit EMBRAPII is the Brazilian Agency for Industrial Research and Innovation It operates through cooperation wih public or private technological and scientific research institutions, that are accredited as EMBRPII Unit. EMBRAPII Unit at EMBRAPA a source of funding EMBRAPII provides 1/3 of resources EMBRAPA provides 1/3 of researchers ( salaries, lab use, etc..) Private company provides 1/3 of resources
II Passitec Network: Technological development for functional use of Brazilian Passiflora The Passitec Network was created in 2008 and has been developing technologies and working in the supply chain production organization to make the passion fruit wild species (Passiflora spp) available for the urban population. This network is coordinated by Embrapa Cerrados and has the collaboration of more than 100 researchers in 27 public and private institutions, among universities, producers associations and cooperatives, rural extension institutions, state and village institutions.
II Passitec Network: Technological development for functional use of Brazilian Passiflora To introduce wild species into the market Knowledge Development Integrated actions to structure production Source: Dra Ana Costa Embrapa Cerrados - Passitec Network
II Passitec Network: Technological development for functional use of Brazilian Passiflora Knowledge Development Biological information Production Systems knowledge Technology and Processing Source: Dra Ana Costa Passitec Network Functional and medicinal studies
II Passitec Network: Technological development for functional use of Brazilian Passiflora Strategy Used to structure Production Chain A B C D E F A) Technology demonstration and economic viability for the different participants in the network; B) Technology transfer and coordination with the links of production chain (seedling producers, rural producers, sellers); C) Support to organize communities in associations and cooperatives; D) Training and technical support during the stage of structuring the chain productive links; E) Promotion of fruits and products obtained from the new specie; F) Support to include producers into the commercialization chain. Source: Dra Ana Costa Passitec Network
II Passitec Network: Technological development for functional use of Brazilian Passiflora In 2013, the first variety of Passiflora setacea, BRS-PC (Pearl Passion Fruit), was launched and after less than 4 years it became the main income of family farmers and settlements in the Piripau area in the Federal District. This was a result of a successfully network strategy to build knowledge. Nowadays the fruit is commercialized in several Brazilian states Celso Furtado Rural Development Award Brazilian Ministry of National Integration Source: Dra Ana Costa Passitec Network
Partnership between researchers and institutions Main Lessons Integrated vision of research, production chain and consumption Interaction, Communication
Challenges considering both Examples Funding. New Technologies In order to produce bioproducts is necessary to have a supply of biomass continuosly. Coordination among actors (academia, public and private institutions, producers, social organizations, government). Competition of industrial products or inputs from the petrochemical industry (cost). Partnerships. Governamental Policies - A Bioeconomy National Strategy to give incentives to foster Bioeconomy and Bioeconomy Research.
Thank you very much!
