The Agency for Renewable Resources (FNR) Twenty Years of Support to Bioenergy and Bio-products Central coordinating agency in the area of Renewable Resources in Germany Acting on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV) 2
Tasks and Fields of work Bioenergy and bioproducts are covered R&D programme management on behalf of BMELV Information and advice to stakeholders and consumers Public relations activities EU and international activities Aim: Support market introduction 3
nachwachsende-rohstoffe.de FOSTERING THE CULTIVATION OF RENEWABLE RESOURCES Support of R&D in Cultivation The Project EVA E V A
EVA - Optimised Cropping Systems for the Production of Energy Plants Aim Productive and sustainable design of energy crop production under different regional conditions in Germany. Overall aims: a high net energy yield innovative cultivation concepts need to be enhanced alternative crops (biodiversity) for rotations heuristic evaluation of cultivation systems (economic and environmental perspective) Main field of research: Crop rotation experiments in different agrarian regions Start 2005 third phase now until 2015 (EVA III) 5
EVA - 30 pilot cultivations and experiments in Germany running Promising results in crop rotation cultivation! Recommendations result in higher biodiversity More extensive agricultural production Source: FNR
bio-energie.de FOSTERING SUSTAINABILITY CERTIFICATION FOR BIOFUELS German approach to sustainability certificate for biofuels the ISCC certificate
ISCC Sustainability certification since 2010 ISCC assets recognised by the European Commission for all member countries reliable proof of compliance with sustainability requirements Global scheme covering all kind of biomass Audits conducted by independent third party certification bodies ISCC is oriented towards reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, sustainable use of land, protection of natural biospheres and social sustainability FNR support to ISCC development ( ) 1. Development of concept 2. Pilot phase 3. Implementation of ISCC certification system 8
ISCC - Milestones of development Worldwide ISCC was ratified as first sustainability certificate in Germany in January 2010 The accreditation by the EU-Commission and for all Member States was accepted in July 2011 Support by FNR until September 2012 (end of the initial ISCC development): More than certificates have been issued since certification bodies are currently cooperating with ISCC ISCC is being used in 71 countries. 9
bioenergie-regionen.de FOSTERING PUBLIC PARTICIPATION AND DECENTRALISATION Supporting Renewable Resources in Bioenergy Regions and Bioenergy Villages
About Bioenergy-Regions Contest Targets: Avoid climate change, Add regional value, Create jobs, Secure energy supply, Transfer knowledge, Develop and expand bioenergy networks and Mitigate conflicts in the area of bioenergy. Support: Up to grant per region No support to investments 11
Bioenergy-Regions One Successful Approach 25 model concepts for bioenergy use in rural regions They create information transfer and acceptance for bioenergy They show good examples and contribute to a positive image They are successful examples of current R&D activities BR bring rural development through advanced bioenergy BR contribute significantly to the transition of the energy supply 12
