AUTOMATED REPORTING FOR WATER TREATMENT & DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS Annual Conference May 3, 2015 Presented by: Zane Spencer, PT P.Tech.(Eng.) Controls Technologist MPE Engineering Ltd.
Presentation Agenda Why reports are required / desired Reporting methods overview Why use automated reporting? Typical reporting requirements Continuous C i monitoring i Data validation Additional reporting requirements Additional reporting capabilities Review of automated reporting methods Sample reports
Why Reports are Required Government Regulation Part of each water system s s approval under the applicable acts (per province) Water Treatment Plant Optimization Tracking chemical usage, equipment performance and efficiency Water Distribution Optimization Monitoring i water distribution ib i network Billing for regional distribution systems
Manual Reporting Manual Reporting refers to the processof an operator tki taking readings from the various locations of remote process equipment, entering the data in a central record keeping system and formulating that data into reports. Data Entry Data Transfer Field Operators Process Instrumentation & Equipment
Manual Reporting Annual Report Monthly Reports Monthly readings are combined in annualreport for submission to AESRD Daily readings are summarized for each month Samples are formatted (min/max/avg) and displayed for operator review Daily Readings p y p Samples Manual Readings Samples collected from SCADA systems, instruments, data loggers are entered into spreadsheets dh
Automated Reporting Automated t reporting refers to the process in which h dt data from remote process equipment is communicated to a central processing station by way of radio, Ethernet, etc. The data can then be automatically formulated into a report. SCADA / DCS Communications PLCs & RTUs Process Instrumentation & Equipment
Automated Reporting Annual Report Monthly Reports Daily Readings Samples On line Readings Monthly readings are combined in annual report for submission to AESRD Daily readings are summarized for each month Samples are formatted (min/max/avg) and displayed for operator review Samples representing 5 minutes extracted from PC Collected on computer at frequent intervals (10 seconds)
Benefits to Implementing an Automated Reporting System Reduce time required to collect and format data Comply with operating approval Provide audit trail for compliance inspections Provide current dashboard view of WTP and distribution system performance Alert operators to potential issues Allow for diagnosis and correction of data spikes & errors
Limitations and Drawbacks to Implementing an Automated Reporting System Data requires operator validation in some circumstance Data collection over slow radio or network links may result in lost information (Depends on reporting scheme setup) Should not completely replace manual data records. Actual instrument readings can be used for reconciliations when automated t ddata collection systems fail Should be utilized as a tool by operations, not a replacement for process monitoring and adjustment
Typical Reporting Requirements ( Subject tto terms of each facilities approval ) Raw water turbidity Raw water volume Filtered water turbidity ( < 0.1 NTU 99% of samples) Filtered water particle counts (membrane systems) CT performance ratio Clearwell volume (minimum) Distribution flow (max hourly or 2x daily average) Filtered water ph Filtered water temperature Filtered water chlorine residual Treatment chemical dosages Distribution flow volumes
Continuous Monitoring Continuous monitoring and recording at < 5 minute sampling intervals One value required for each 5 minute interval Any single data point from the interval The minimum of all values over the interval The maximum of all values over the interval The average of all values over the interval
Continuous Monitoring Continuous monitoring and recording at < 5 minute sampling intervals How fast should you record data? 1 device x min secx x 11 sample = = values values 1 day 1 1 min sec day day values x x 365 days = = 525,600 31,536,000 values values day y year y year year Record data only as it t changes in order to optimize data storage by eliminating the redundant data storage, as illustrated above
Data Validation Data results of the on line or continuous monitoring equipment must bevalidated to ensure that the results reflects the actual quality of the water and is not an electronic or meter spikes by direct or indirect means
Data Validation Application was made to AEP to create an automatic validation procedure to automatically eliminate data if: Thedata does reflect actual water quality The events causing the incorrect data are predictable and recordable The procedure is defined and implemented with specific parameters HINT: It is recommended to implement the validation procedure in a method that maintains original AND validated readings
Additional Reporting Capabilities for Water Treatment Plants What can be reported from water treatment plants? Anything connected to the system: Raw water ph Intermediate process measurements Power usage Pump runtimes Filter performance variables Calculation fromrecorded recorded data: Cost of producing water Pump curve performance (VFD or fixed speed) Alarm tracking (f (after hours callouts)
Additional Reporting Requirements for Water Distribution & Regional Distribution Systems What can be reported from a water distribution system? Booster station / PRV station flow & pressure Chemical booster station usages & residuals Power usage Pump runtimes Water balances (over time) Water volumes to regional entities Cost of pumping water Pump curve performance (VFD or fixed speed) Alarm tracking (after hours callouts)
Automated Reporting Data Storage / Extraction Methods Writing Data from the SCADA system to CSV Files PROS No additional costs CSV files are easily created and viewed CONS CSV reports contain no formatting Potential for data loss
Automated Reporting Data Storage / Extraction Methods Storing and Retrieving Data from Trend Files PROS No additional cost for historian CONS Potential for data loss Limited data retrieval tools
Automated Reporting Data Storage / Extraction Methods Storing and Retrieving Data from a Historian PROS Store and forward can reduce potential data loss Database clients can re use data queries CONS Additional cost for historian hardware and software
Automated Report Data Presentation Methods Generating Reports using ONLY Microsoft Excel PROS Lower cost for Excel based reports CONS May require extensive VBA programming Retrieval, formatting, report scheduling and generation
Automated Report Data Presentation Methods Generating Reports using a Third Party Software AND Microsoft Excel PROS Software is easily configured to schedule e and generate reports Little to no VBA programming required CONS Additional cost for purchase and support of third party software package
Automated Report Data Presentation Methods Generating Reports using a database client (Microsoft Access) PROS Database queries es can be re used Reports are generated faster Reporting options are more flexible CONS Requires data Historian Additional cost for dtb database client
Automated Reporting Methods CSV TREND HISTORIAN Excel Only Very Small System Small Systems Small to Medium Systems Third Party & Excel Very Small System Small Systems Medium to Large Systems Database Client N/A N/A Large Systems Which h one is the best tfit for your system?
Automated Reporting Project Initiation Ideally initiated during facility design Multiple Stakeholder involvement: Facility Operators Utility Managers Consulting Engineers Systems Integrators Regulatory & operational requirements
Monthly Plant Performance Report Sample Report Efficiency Utility usage Chemical usage Operation costs TOTAL COST OF MAKING WATER
Avg daily turb. Max daily turb. Min daily turb. Daily readings >0.1 & < 0.3 NTU Daily % good Sample Report Monthly Filter Performance Report Monthly avg Monthly min Monthly max
Sample Report Water DistributionReport Regional Water System Daily volumes Balance checks % loss calc Monthly totals Monthly avg Monthly min Monthly max
