3 1. Establishing Infrastructure Hybridity This section will cover how to pair on-premise and cloud site(s) 3

4 1.1 Site Pairing of On-Premise and Cloud site. Login to On-Premise vcenter Site-A vcenter represents the On-Premise vcenter.enter Username. Enter Password.Click on Login 4

5 Kick-off the Site Pairing Process Select Hybrid Cloud Services (HCX).Stay on Dashboard view. Under Site Pairings, click on New Site Pairing. 5

6 Register Cloud Site Before any migrations can be done you will need to register the Cloud Site with the HCX.Click on Register new Connection. 6

7 Register the Cloud Site Next, enter the URL and credentials for Cloud Site. Cloud Site URL is Enter User Name.Password.Click on Register 7

8 Configure the HCX Interconnect Service Network: Provide the On-Premise Portgroup to be used.choose Cluster/HostChoose DatastoreProvide an IP Address/PL for the service.provide Default Gateway.Provide DNS.Choose the VMotion Network.Enter the non-routable vmotion Network IP Address /PL.Provide PasswordClick on Next 8

9 Configure the Network Extension Service Enter the following L2 Concentrator parameterschoose Compute.Choose Datastore.Choose Management Network.Provide Ip Address /PL for Network Extension Service.Provide Default Gateway.Provide Passwords.Click on Next 9

11 Verify Configuration Verify the Green checksclick on Finish HCX Setup You should be back at the Hybrid Cloud Services Dashboard.If Site Pairing was successful, you will see a new entry under Site Pairings with the pairing status as Up. 11

12 Monitor Tasks Tasks should show the deploymentlook for the HCX Services Initialization task in the Task Console. Verify HCX Setup completion Hybrid Cloud Services from the Navigator menu on the left.under the Interconnect tab.the HCX Components sub-tab shows additional information.view HCX services deployed. Notice all of the status should be Active and Tunnel is Up.This completes Site-Pairing 1.2 Extending Network Portgroup from On-Premise to Cloud Site. 12

13 Extending On-Prem Portgroup Represents the Home button on the On-Premise vcenter.click on Networking. Choosing the port group to extend Expand the Datacenter RegionA01Right Clicking on vds RegionA01-vDS-COMP (the port group to extend) brings up a few options.choose Hybridity ActionsClick on Extend Networks to the Cloud 13

14 Configure Network Extension Choose the Edge Router.Choose the specific portgroupenter the Gateway /Prefix length Click the Stretch button to complete the operation to stretch the network to the cloud. Monitor Tasks Deployment status can be tracked here. 14

15 2. Bi-Directional Workload Mobility This section covers how to establish workload mobility via Zero-downtime migrations or Bulk Migration between On-Premise and Cloud Site(s) 15

16 2.1 Zero-downtime Migration across On-Premise to Cloud Site. Zero-downtime Migration We will begin by logging into the On-premise (Site A) VC.Site-A vcenter represents the On-Premise vcenterenter UsernameEnter PasswordClick on Login Zero downtime Migration To access the HCX plugin:click Hybrid Cloud Services (HCX) from the Navigator menu on the leftor Click Hybrid Cloud Services (HCX) from the Home menu on the right. 16

17 Verification of Network Extension Verify the Site Pairing is establishedverify Network Extension has been establishedgo next. Verify Network Extension Verify the Network Stretch is completed.shows Interconnect tab.extended Networks, on the Sub-tab is shown.stretched Portgroup is shown.you will see the status Extension complete stating that we have successfully extended the L2 Network Stretch. 17

18 Zero-downtime Migration We will know kick-off the migrationshows Migration tab.click on Migrate Virtual Machines. Choose VM to Migrate VM Shows VM core-a that we will migrate.we Specify Destination Container click on the folder icon to open the Destination Container window.we choose the host esx-02b.corp.local. We will migrate the VM core- A from esx-01a.corp.local in RegionA01 Datacenter to esx-02b.corp.local in RegionB01 Datacenter.Click on Select Destination to select it. 18

19 Zero-downtime Migration Shows the Migration Type being vmotion.shows the destination storage.shows the provisioning type for the Storage.Shows the Network Mapping of the stretched portgroup.click Next to continue. 19

20 Zero-downtime Migration After validation, Click Finish Zero-downtime Migration Refresh to see current statusthe green arrow shows the direction of the migration - Local to Remote site.the 'vmo' tag next to the green arrow shows the type of migration - vmotion. 20

21 Zero-downtime Migration Status is now Migration completed.go Next. View Migrated VM Now we are going to connect to the Site-B vcenter (Cloud Site) to locate the VM Core-A that we have vmotioned from Site A (On-Premise Site).Shows Cloud vcenterenter Username.Enter Password.Click on Login to continue. 21

Bulk Migrate from Cloud Site to On-Premise Login to On-Premise vcenter.enter Username.Enter Password.Click on Login 22

23 Bulk Migrate VMs Click HCX from the Navigator menu on the leftor Click HCX from the Home menu on the right. Start Migration Shows Migration tab.click on Migrate Virtual Machines. 23

24 Since we are migrating from Cloud Site to On-Premise, the Reverse Migration option is selected.click on the esx-02b.corp.local host from the Source Inventory. Choose VMs 1. VMs Core-A and Core-B are selected2. Under Default Policy, the esxi host is chosen from the on-premise site.3. Choose Bulk Migration.4. Click on Next. 24

25 Validation Click Finish after Validation has been successful. 25

26 Bulk Migration Progress 'Rev' represents bulk migration. The blue arrow shows the direction of the migration.click on Refresh. 26

27 Bulk Migration Bulk Migration is now complete. Verify Bulk Migration Success Review Hosts and Clusters and choose ESX host to find both the VMs that were bulk migrated.congratulations! Both VMs were bulk migrated successfully. 27

28 3. Hybrid Disaster Recovery This section covers how to provide business continuity services via HCX, across On-Premise and Cloud site(s). 28

29 3.1 Protect an On-Premise VM to the Cloud Site. Login to On-Premise vcenter Site-A vcenter represents the On-Premise vcenter.enter Username. Enter Password. 32 Protecting the VM VM core-a is selected.expanding shows Protection Options for VM core-adestination Container information is chosen.storage information is chosen.provisioning Type is chosen.rpo of 15 minutes is chosen. Recovery Point Objective (RPO) is the maximum targeted period in which data might be lost from an IT service due to a major incident. You can set the range between 15mins - 24 hours.snapshots Interval of 1 hour is chosen. This establishes multiple recovery points. It can be configured between 1 hour - 4 days. No. of Snapshots is chosen as 1.Network Mapping is chosen automatically.click on Next 32

34 Monitor Progress of Protection Shows HomeClick on Hybrid Cloud Services (HCX) Monitor Progress Shows Disaster Recovery TabLocal VMs show the followingtotal # of VMs that are being protected out of the Total # of VMs in the local site.it also shows the # of these protected VMs that have been tested thus far.remote VMs show the followingthe # of VMs that the local site is protecting for the Remote Site.It also shows the # of these protected VMs that have been tested thus far.progress shows how many VMs are in the following stateconfiguringsyncingrecoveringtestingcleaning Monitor Progress DR tab shows the DR Protection being configured for the selected VM.Currently the Status of the VM is ConfiguringThe # of VMs protected under Local VMs goes up by 1 34

35 Protection is now Active VM is now in Active State - DR Protection is active for this particular VM. This is represented by the green shield.the yellow triangle means that this active VM has not been tested.green circle represents a powered-on VM.Direction of the arrow shows the direction of protection. In this case the VM is protected on the Cloud site. Verification of Protection Shows Tasks from the left pane. Under Tasks, the task "Enable replication of virtual machine" will show Completed.Congratulations! You have enabled Disaster Recovery Protection for a VM. In the next exercise we will test this protection. 3.2 Test the DR protection in the Cloud Site. 35

36 Test DR Protection We will now run Test Recovery on the protected VM on the Remote site. HCX-CLOUD-Site-B represents the Cloud Site.Enter usernameenter passwordclick LOG IN Cloud Site HCX Dashboard Shows Services tableft Pane shows all Services available on the Cloud Site. Our focus is on the DISASTER RECOVERY option.local VMs here mean the VMs that are local to the Remote site.remote VMs are the VMs that are remote to the Remote Site (on-premise).the arrow shows DR protection that is incoming to the Remote site. 36

37 Configuring Testing Against the protected VM, Clicking on the 3 dots shows more options.the operations available to you are -Recover (To recover a VM immediately)planned Recovery (To plan a recovery at a scheduled time)test Recovery (Testing the protected VM on the recovery site to ensure its integrity/state)reconfigure (Edit the RPO, Snapshots etc, other characteristics for the protected VM)Pause (In the event there is a planned event such as a maintenance window, this options help avoiding conflicts of replicating at that point of time) Resume (Resume the protection)remove (Remove the protection plan) Kick-off Test Recovery Click on Test Recovery 37

38 Test Recovery Click on Test Testing Recovery On the top status, you will notice Successfully queued Test Recovery in green. 38

39 Test Complete Detailed Status of the VM shows Test Complete.No.of tested VMs under Remote VMs has changed. It now shows 1/1 VM tested.instead of the yellow triangle, there now is a green check mark. Testing Protection Expanding gives you more information on the Replication Status, Activity History, Replica Instances, Replication Details, Virtual Machine Details etc 39

40 Verifying Test On going back to Cloud vcenter Site-B vcenter tab. Tasks -> Verify Register virtual machine task will show Completed. Verifying Test Now we will verify the existence of the test VM on the Cloud site.shows HomeShows Hosts and Clusters 40

41 VM has recovered The VM core-a is now registered and powered on at Site B. Test Cleanup Now back on HCX Cloud Interface. Shows ServicesShows DISASTER RECOVERYExpand the options.click on Test Cleanup. 41

42 Test Cleanup Click on Cleanup. Test Cleanup The Status now reads Cleaning Test. 42

43 Test Cleanup Test Cleanup now changes to Active after the action is completed. Verification of Test cleanup The VM is no longer part of the inventory on the Cloud Side Inventory.Congratulations, you have successfully tested an actively DR Protected VM! 3.3 Recover from a simulated disaster. 43

44 Simulate Disaster We will know simulate disaster on the protected VM.Site-A vcenter represents our On-Premise vcenterenter UsernameEnter PasswordClick on Login Simulate Disaster Click on Hosts and Clusters 44

46 Simulate Disaster We know go back to the HCX plugin to view status of the VMShows Home and HCX plug-in.shows Disaster RecoveryYou will notice the VM Status is now Protection Inactive, represented by the red lightning icon. Recovery from Disaster Given that the VM is down on the On-Premise site, we know login to the Cloud site to recover the VM.Now expand the 3 dots against the VM and click on Recover. 46

47 Recover By Default it chooses the latest recovery point instance.click on Recover. Recover Shows the VM Recovery is successfully QueuedDetailed Status shows the Received request for recovery. 47

48 VM Recovery The VM has successfully been Recovered. This is denoted by the dark grey shield icon. Reverse Replication Lets power the VM back on the On-Premise Environment. This simulates bringing back the original site back up.shows VM core-ashows Power OptionsClick on Power On 48

49 Reverse Replication Shows HomeClick on Hybrid Cloud Services (HCX) Review Replication Status Shows Disaster Recovery. You will notice the replication status as Protection inactive. 49

51 Reverse Replication Process In the Detailed Status notice the reverse replication is in Synchronizing (initial) mode.go next Reverse Replication Process VM is now in Active state.and 2 arrows represent the reverse replication and forward protection. The VC will only have 1 VM.Congratulations! You have successfully Simulated a disaster, recovered and reverse replicated protection on a VM with HCX! 51
