4 The Federal Nuclear Emergency Plan FNEP Objective: To minimize the impact of a nuclear emergency on public health, safety, property and environment of Canadians Why Health Canada? Nuclear emergency = health emergency No role in promotion or regulation of nuclear industry Labs, monitoring networks, expertise already in place 4

5 Scope Events involving Licensed nuclear facilities in Canada, US, or abroad, with off-site impacts Nuclear-powered vessels in Canadian ports/waters Other serious radiological events (terrorism, satellite re-entry) 5
