Data Collection and Integration How to Pull the Pieces Together Presented by: Hart Smalley Software Development Manager Mears Group Inc.
Cornerstones in Data Integration Before Pipeline Safety Act Following Pipeline Safety Act & RP0502 Lessons Learned in Past 6 Years Data Integration Today Moving Forward
Before Pipeline Safety Act Objectives of the surveys were to maintain corrosion control systems and to identify areas to remediate. Excavation was not required. Extensive mileage was surveyed in a blow and go manner. CIS was the primary tool used. Soil resistivity and DCVG occasionally performed for CP design.
Before Pipeline Safety Act CIS data was collected either manually or with early vintage data loggers. Pipeline alignment sheets were used to help lay out the survey, and all reads were documented by chainage. Data was manually analyzed and archived. Most of the time areas to remediate had to be relocated with repeat surveys.
Example of an Early Vintage CIS Data Logger
Example of an Early Vintage CIS Plot
Following the Pipeline Safety Act & RP0502 The surveys are part of an audited Integrity Management Plan (IMP). Require more accurate and reliable data to be recorded and reported. Excavations, many times under payment, are now required to validate the data and pipeline integrity. Alignment and analysis of multiple data streams took center stage. Engineering stationing still was the primary method of collecting and integrating the data.
Following the Pipeline Safety Act & RP0502 A minimum of 2 survey tools were required to be integrated together. PCM - Pipeline Current Mapper DCVG Direct Current Voltage Gradient Soil Resistivity Depth CIS Close Interval Survey ACVG Alternating Current Voltage Gradient
Typical ECDA Analysis Matrix
Typical ECDA Value Analysis Matrix
Evolution of Data Collection and Integration We had to learn what GPS really meant. Had to determine what accuracy is needed for the GPS data. Implemented the use of GPS to spatially collect and integrate the data. Early on, GPS was not used for DCVG, soil resistivity, PCM & depth data. They were added into the CIS data stream using chainages relative to the nearest GPS control point.
Early Version of an ECDA Integrated Data Set
Evolution of Data Collection and Integration Increased the use of GPS in collection of all data streams. This drastically increased the accuracy of the spatial integration of the data streams. Pipeline Features Physical Features Roads Flags PCM Measurements Depth Measurements DCVG Indications Soil Resistivity Region Points Rectifiers Casings Surface Information
Evolution of Data Collection and Integration Stationing calculated using post-processed differentially corrected 3 dimensional GPS coordinates. Inspection tools aligned to GPS coordinates for data control and integration. Ability to map anomalies and direct examinations accurately for documentation. Ability to verify region points and other known control points. (ie, angle points, valves, etc.)
Data Collection\Integration Evolution Data analysis is automated and more consistent than a manual or ocular review. More accurate data integration eliminated the need to locate excavation sites by resurveying and eliminated the associated permitting, traffic control, etc. Clients are given an accurate centerline of the pipeline route for incorporation into their GIS.
Current Data Integration Practices Databases are populated to manage and document the ECDA process. Integration of data into one location allows for automated analysis and documentation. GIS integration. Ability to pull all 4 steps together. Accessible data for next round of ECDA.

Moving Forward Historical databases will be created and ready to use for the next testing intervals. Documentation of the process will be readily available and auditable. Engineering review will be easier and remediation definable. The Next Level

The Next Level Integrated Collection Equipment Test equipment that collects sub-meter GPS along with CIS, DCVG, Soil Res, PCM and more
Moving Forward All data used to manage the integrity and reliability of the pipeline will be updated and utilized on a real time basis. The data is accessible and efficient to use for life cycle management decisions and safe operations.
