3 Scheduling This document is a demonstration that shows how Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations supports scheduling of production orders. The primary objective of this demo script is to provide an overview of job scheduling scenarios in a simple production scenario. Target audience The script in this document should be used to demonstrate the value of Finance and Operations to a business decision maker (BDM). The executives that you present to will find value in this script if they are challenged with scheduling production orders. Demo scenario The script in this document focuses on the following areas: Job scheduling Gantt visualization Capacity load Dispatching Resource reservations Material availability Overview Discrete Manufacturing Basics in Finance and Operations contains detailed information about production scheduling. Scheduling is the third step in the production life cycle. You can run scheduling after the production order has been created and estimated. When scheduling is run, the production order status is updated to Scheduled. If the production order hasn t already been estimated before it s scheduled, an estimation of the projected cost is automatically run. Production orders can be operation-scheduled, job-scheduled, or both operation-scheduled and job-scheduled. Operation scheduling This scheduling method is limited to scheduling at the operation level. This scheduling method provides a rough schedule. By using this method, you can assign start and end dates to production orders, and book capacity on resource groups. Scheduling 3

4 Job scheduling This scheduling method explodes each operation in the production order s route into jobs and then does scheduling in each job. This scheduling method provides a detailed schedule. Each operation is broken down into individual jobs that have specific dates, times, and assigned resources. If finite capacity is used, jobs are assigned to resources based on the availability of those resources. You can view and change the schedule in the Gantt chart. When you schedule an order, you can select which scheduling method to use. If scheduling is done automatically, the default method that you defined when you set up production order parameters is used. Each method can be run independently of the other any number of times, and both methods enable multiple productions to be scheduled. The script in this document can be completed in approximately minutes, depending on the level of additional steps and talk that accompany the demonstration. Demo step-by-step Demo: Scheduling Scenario In this scenario, Eduardo, the production planner, must create and schedule two production orders. He must also make sure that resources and materials are available. 1 Make sure that you re signed in to the HQUS legal entity. Tip: You can check the current legal entity in the upper-right corner of the page. First, create the two production orders to schedule. 2 Go to Production control > Production orders > All production orders to open the All production orders list page. 3 On the Action Pane, select New production order. Scheduling 4

5 4 Create a production order for a quantity of 25 of item number D Select Create. 6 Repeat steps 4 through 6 to create another production order for a quantity of 24 of product number D On the All production orders list page, select the two production orders that you just created for product D0004. To easily find these orders, you can enter item number D0004 in the filter field. Scheduling 5

6 Next, run job scheduling. 8 On the Action Pane, on the Schedule tab, select Schedule jobs. 9 In the Job scheduling dialog box, set the Scheduling direction field to Backward from delivery date for both lines. Note: This setting helps guarantee that the jobs are scheduled as late as possible. 10 Make sure that the Finite capacity and Finite material options are set to Yes. These settings help guarantee that the scheduling checks available capacity, and that material can cover the requirements for the orders. 11 Select OK to start the scheduling. You can use Gantt visualization to make last-minute changes to the schedule. 12 On the All production orders list page, select the two orders for product D0004 ( and in this example). 13 On the Action Pane, on the Schedule tab, in the View group, select Gantt chart. 7 14 On the Gantt chart page, select the plus sign (+) next to each resource to expand it. Note: All orders that use the resources from orders and are shown. In this example, there is also an order (001076) for product D0003 that uses the same resources as orders and On the Action Pane, on the Gantt chart tab, in the View mode group, select Order view to view the Gantt chart for the various production orders. Note: There are two views for the Gantt chart: Order view and Resource view. 16 Select the plus sign (+) next to each order to expand it. Scheduling 7

8 17 Drag the second job for order so that it s scheduled a few hours earlier. 18 Right-click the job, and then select Schedule previous jobs. Notice that the first job is moved to accommodate the second job. 19 Select Save to save the schedule. Next, check the capacity load and dispatching from the Gantt chart. 20 Select the second job, and then, on the Action Pane, on the Activity tab, in the View group, select Information. Scheduling 8

9 21 Right-click resource 1211, and then select View details. 22 On the Action Pane, on the Resource tab, in the View group, select Capacity load. Notice the load. 23 Close the Capacity load page. Scheduling 9

10 24 On the Action Pane, on the Resource tab, in the View group, select Dispatching. The Dispatching page shows all the production order jobs that are scheduled on the resource. 25 Close the Dispatching and Gantt chart pages. Next, check the resource reservations. 26 Go to Production control > All production orders. 27 Select the line for the production order for a quantity of 22 of product D0004 ( in this example). 28 On the Action pane, on the Production order tab, in the Production details group, select All jobs. Notice that the four jobs for operations 10 through 40 have been scheduled based on the delivery date. 29 On the Action Pane, select Inquiries > Capacity reservations. Notice that the resources have been reserved. Scheduling 10

11 30 Close the Jobs page. Finally, check material availability. 31 Go to Production control > All production orders. 32 Select the line for the production order for a quantity of 22 of product D0004 ( in this example). 33 On the Action Pane, on the View tab, in the Requirements group, select Explosion. 34 Select Update. 35 Set the Enable trace option to Yes. This setting adds tracing information to the explosion. 36 Select OK. You now see the material availability for the whole production order. Note: Depending on the data, the material might be on hand, or it might require a planned purchase order. Scheduling 11

12 37 Select the Explanation tab to learn what occurred during explosion of the production bill of materials (BOM). Scheduling 12
