4 SECTION ALUMINUM WINDOWS PART 1 GENERAL 1.1 SUMMARY A. Scope: 1. Furnish all labor, materials, equipment and incidentals required to furnish and install aluminum windows as shown on the Drawings and as specified herein. 2. The extent of each type of aluminum window unit is shown on the Drawings. 3. Operable windows shall be mounted within stationary window framing. B. Related Work Specified Elsewhere: 1. Section 04200, Masonry Construction. 2. Section 07920, Caulking and Sealants. 3. Section 08800, Glazing. 1.2 REFERENCES A. Reference Standards: 1. Submit Shop Drawings for the fabrication and installation of aluminum window units and associated components of the Work including wall elevations at 1/4" scale, typical unit elevations at 1" scale and full-size detail sections of every typical composite member. Show fasteners, anchors, hardware, operators and other components not included in Manufacturer's standard data, including glazing details. 3. Submit Manufacturer's specifications, recommendations and standard details for aluminum window units, including fabrication, finishing, hardware and other components of the Work. Include certified test laboratory reports as necessary to show compliance with the requirements. 4. Color charts for Insulating Panels color selection. C. Warranty: 1. Submit written warranty signed by the Manufacturer, Installer and Contractor, agreeing to replace aluminum window units which fail in materials or workmanship within 3 years of the date of acceptance. 2. Failure of materials or workmanship shall include, but not be limited to, excessive leakage or air infiltration, excessive deflections, faulty operation of sash, deterioration of finish or metal in excess of normal weathering, and defects in hardware, weatherstripping and other components of the Work. D. Operation and Maintenance Instructions: Submit the following information only in accordance with Section 01730: 1. Supplier data. 2. Detailed routine maintenance and cleaning instructions. 3. Detailed procedures for minor repairs of dents, scratches, staining, etc. 4. Warranty. E. Samples: Furnish samples of specified Manufacturer's finish for color selection. 1.4 PRODUCT DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING A. Delivery of Materials: 1. Comply with Section Deliver aluminum windows cartoned or crated to provide protection during transit and job storage. B. Storage of Materials: 1. Comply with Section Store units off the floor in a manner that will prevent corrosion and damage. PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.1 MATERIALS A. Heavy Commercial Windows (Grade HC): Provide window units complying with the requirements of AAMA Classification HC50 for building. B. Aluminum Extrusions: 1. Alloy and temper: ASTM B 221, 6063-T5. 2. Thickness: 1/8" minimum at all locations for main frame sash members and Page 5 of 12 Sycamore Creek WWTP Expansion and Upgrade, Phase 3 & 4, SS # 5174/5174A
6 tube supports. 3. Vertical mullions and support clips: Comply with window Manufacturer's recommendations. C. Thermal Separator: Separate interior and exterior aluminum frame sections by a continuous urethane connector with a 3/8" clear milled thermal break on both sides. D. Fasteners: All shall be Non-corrosive Type 316 stainless steel compatible with the aluminum window members, trim, hardware, anchors and other components of the window units. 1. Use no exposed fasteners, except where unavoidable for the application of hardware. 2. Provide Phillips flat-head machine screws for exposed fasteners, unless otherwise specified. a. Exposed fasteners shall match the finish of the surrounding metal the fastener, unless otherwise specified. E. Sliding Weatherstripping: Double polypropylene weatherstripping complying with AAMA F. Glass and Glazing Materials: Comply with Section 08800, Glazing. G. Friction Shoes: Nylon or other durable non-abrasive non-metallic, non-staining, non-corrosive material. H. Insulated Aluminum Panels: 1. Comply with Section I. Operable Window Hardware: 1. General: All hardware shall be compatible with aluminum and shall not bridge thermal barriers. 2. Hardware: a. Hinges shall be heavy duty stainless steel 4 bar type conforming to AAMA Hinges shall have a positive stop and an adjustable friction shoe. b. Provide two Underscreen Push Bars for each operable window wider than 42". Underscreen Push Bar shall be located at bottom of horizontal frame. Push Bar shall be hinged and shall open window 8" minimum. c. Locks shall be bronze cam lock type. J. Expansion Anchor Devices: Provide Type 316 stainless steel adhesive anchors in accordance with Section K. Bituminous Coatings: Provide Cold-applied asphalt mastic complying with SSPC- PAINT 12 compounded for 30 mil thickness per coat. L. Protective Lacquer: Use Manufacturer's standard, clear, nonyellowing lacquer, compounded specifically for protection of anodic coatings during construction. 7 M. Compression Weatherstripping: 1. Provide Manufacturer's standard replaceable stripping of either molded neoprene gaskets complying with ASTM D2000, Designation 2BC415 to 3BC620, or molded PVC gaskets complying with ASTM D2287. N. Sliding Weatherstripping: 1. Provide Manufacturer's standard replaceable stripping of wool, polypropylene or nylon woven pile, with nylon fabric and aluminum strip backing, complying with AAMA Sliding weatherstripping includes stripping for wiping action as well as sliding action at jamb rails, head rails and meeting rails wherever there is no stop or lap to receive compression weatherstripping. O. Glazing Gaskets: Provide Manufacturer's standard stripping of molded neoprene complying with ASTM D2000, Designation 2BC415 to 3BC620, or molded closed-cell neoprene complying with ASTM C509, Grade 4 for glazing factoryinstalled glass and panels, and for gaskets which are factory-installed in a "captive" assembly of glazing stops. P. All new operable windows shall be Thermally Broken Windows as manufactured by: 1. Kawneer, 8225T. 2. Or approved equal. Q. All new stationary windows shall be as manufactured by: 1. Kawneer, 451T. 2. Or approved equal. 2.2 FABRICATION A. General: 1. Provide Manufacturer's standard fabrication and accessories except to the extent more specific or more stringent requirements are specified. 2. Anchor and assemble window units completely. Prepare sash for glazing. 3. Provide all necessary anchors, clips, fillers and modifications to framing members as required for installation. B. Sizes and Profiles: 1. Window unit sizes and profile requirements are shown on the Drawings. 2. It is intended that similar details by other Manufacturers will be acceptable, provided they comply with the size requirements and with minimum/maximum profile requirements as shown or described. C. Coordination of Fabrication: 1. Check actual window openings in the construction Work by accurate field measurement before fabrication and show recorded measurements on Shop Drawings. 2. Window units shall be shop fabricated. All joints shall be accurately cut and fitted to flush hairline, free from burrs, welds used in fabrication shall be Argon Electric. 3. Allow for erection tolerances and provide for movements of window units due to thermal expansion and building deflections. 8 D. Provide mullions and cover plates matching window units complete with anchors for support to structure and for installation of window units as shown. E. Operable Window Frames: 1. Framing and venting member shall be 2-1/4" in depth and of a one part construction incorporating a 3/8" two part chemically cured, high density polyurethane thermal barrier. 2. Frame and ventilator extrusions shall be a minimum 1/8" thick. 3. Ventilators shall be tubular and corner construction shall be mitered and sigma arc welded over mitered corner clipped joint. 4. Frame corners and meeting rail intersections shall be coped and sigma arc welded over mortise and tenon. 5. All operable aluminum windows shall be provided with removable screens. a. Screens shall be constructed with extruded aluminum frames, rigidly joined at the corners. b. Screen cloth shall be 18 x 16 mesh aluminum and shall be cleaned thoroughly to provide a uniform color. c. Screen cloth and frame shall be furnished to match the aluminum windows. d. Splines shall be extruded vinyl, removable to permit rescreening. F. Stationary Window Frames: 1. Vertical and horizontal framing members shall have a normal face dimension of 2". Depth shall be 4-1/2". 2. Framing system shall provide for flush glazing on all sides with no projecting stops. 3. Framing members shall be provided with manufacturer's standard extruded or fabricated sill flashing. G. Aluminum Window Finishes: 1. Window Frames: Extruded Aluminum Class 1 Anodida. a. Anodizing shall be factory applied. b. Process all components of each assembly simultaneously to attain complete color uniformity. c. Color: Clear. 2.3 SOURCE QUALITY CONTROL A. Design Criteria: The requirements for aluminum windows, and the terminology and standards or performance and fabrication workmanship, are those specified and recommended in ANSI A134.1, and the applicable general recommendations published by Architectural Aluminum Manufacturer's Association, National Association of Architectural Metal Manufacturers and Aluminum Association except as otherwise shown or specified. B. Provide aluminum window units produced by a single firm, capable of showing prior successful production of units similar to those required. Operable sash window units shall be furnished and installed where called for. C. Requirements of Regulatory Agencies: Page 8 of 12 Sycamore Creek WWTP Expansion and Upgrade, Phase 3 & 4, SS # 5174/5174A
9 1. Performance and Testing: Comply with the air infiltration tests, water resistance tests and applicable load tests specified in ANSI A134.1 for the type and classification of window unit required in each case except as otherwise specified. 2. Comply with Section 3 "High Performance Specifications" of ANSI A Where the required uniform load structural test pressure exceeds the minimum specified for "High Performance", the value is shown on the Drawings. 3. Design wind velocity at project site per OBBC. a. Air Infiltration Test, ASTM E 283: 0.06 cubic feet per minute per foot of crack length maximum infiltration at 6.24 pounds per square foot differential pressure across window unit. b. Water Penetration Test, ASTM E 331: No water penetration for 15 minutes when window is subjected to 5 gallons per hour per square foot flow rate with 6.24 pounds per square foot differential pressure across window unit. c. Wind Load Test, ASTM E 330: 1/175 span length maximum deformation of frame or sash member under 20 pounds per square foot minimum positive and negative load for 10 seconds. d. Testing: Provide Manufacturer's certification that standard window units comply with the requirements and have been tested in accordance with the specified tests; otherwise, perform the required tests through a recognized testing laboratory or agency and provide certified test results. 4. Thermal Testing: Thermal break window frame unit and ventilator portions shall be tested in accordance with AAMA Provide a Condensation Resistance Factor not less than 50 and a "U" value not to exceed.65 BTU/hr./sq.ft./EF derived from a calorimeter (guarded hot box) constructed in accordance with ASTM C236 utilizing CFR data. Calculated "U" values will not be accepted. 5. Window Temperature Exposure Test: Provide test results from an accredited independent laboratory complying with the following criteria: a. Interior chamber temperature to be held at +70 F as indicated by thermocouple temperature sensing. b. Test performed with still air inside and outside. 6. Window Frame Thermal Insulator shall be polyurethane, 3/8" minimum separation of frame members and tested to meet the following: a. Tension Pull Test: Secure the interior and exterior faces of a 12" section mechanically in a fixed horizontal position. Heat tape applied to the exterior face shall control the surface temperature at +180 F three to five minutes before loading, as indicated by a thermocouple wire operated by an automatic controller. Direct Tension (pull) to be applied by use of a Universal Testing machine set in the 12,000 pound load range. Test results using the above shall show no loss of bond at 4,000 pound load with load applied to a strain rate of.050" per inch per minute. b. Shear Test: Secure the interior face of 12" sections mechanically in a fixed vertical position. Heat tape applied to the exterior face shall control the surface temperature at +180EF three to five minutes before loading, as indicated by a thermocouple wire operated by an automatic controller. 10 Universal Testing machine set in the 12,000 pound load range. Test results shall show no loss of bond at 5,500 pound loading. c. Uniform Structural load: Provide a test report from an independent laboratory on a 8' - 0" x 4' - 0" horizontal pivoted window. Window to be tested at +68 F interior and 180 F exterior at positive and negative loads of 90 psf. Test results must indicate no permanent deformation or loss of bond in the thermal barrier material or between extruded aluminum and thermal barrier. 7. Comply with the Performance Specifications for Aluminum Architecture Windows as Published by Architectural Aluminum Manufacture Association. PART 3 EXECUTION 3.1 EXAMINATION AND VERIFICATION OF CONDITION A. Contractor and his Installer must examine the substrate and conditions under which aluminum window Work is to be installed and review with the Engineer any conditions detrimental to the proper and timely completion of the Work. B. Proceed with the Work only after deficiencies have been satisfactorily corrected. C. Field verify all rough openings prior to the commencement of shop drawings. 3.2 INSTALLATION A. Comply with Manufacturer's specifications and recommendations for the installation of window units, hardware, operators, and other components of the Work. B. Operable windows shall be mounted within stationary window framing. C. Set units plumb, level and true to line without warp or rack of frames or sash. Anchor securely in place. D. Separate aluminum and other corrodible metal surfaces from other materials at points of contact. E. Install aluminum trim angles at locations shown on the Drawings, or at other locations if required to provide a neat, finished appearance for the window installation. F. Comply with Section 07920, Sealants and Caulking for compounds, fillers and gaskets to be installed concurrently with window units. G. Install windows per details, approved shop drawings and Manufacturer's recommendations. Window Installer must be approved by the window manufacturer. H. Do not cut or abrade finishes which cannot be restored in the field. Return items with such finishes to Manufacturer for alteration or provide new units at Page 10 of 12 Sycamore Creek WWTP Expansion and Upgrade, Phase 3 & 4, SS # 5174/5174A
11 Contractor's option. 3.3 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL A. Adjust operating sash and hardware to provide smooth operation and weathertight closure. B. Lubricate hardware and other moving parts. C. Exercise protective treatment and other precautions through the remaining construction period to ensure that window units will have only normal weathering damage or deterioration at the time of acceptance. D. Protection of Aluminum from Dissimilar Materials: Apply two coats of zinc chromate primer on aluminum surfaces which do not have the factory applied fluoropolymer coating and which are in contact with dissimilar materials. 3.4 CLEANING A. Comply with Section B. Avoid damage to finish when cleaning aluminum surfaces after window installation. C. Remove excess glazing and sealant compounds, dirt and other substances. D. Thoroughly clean all window glass, interior and exterior, following installation. Repeat cleaning just prior to final acceptance of the Contract. E.
