1 SECTION CONDUITS AND BOXES 1.01 DESCRIPTION PART 1- GENERAL A. Work covered by this section includes the furnishing and installation of conduits and boxes SUBMITTALS A. The Contractor shall submit shop drawings, in accordance with Section Shop Drawing submittals shall clearly show the following: 1. Materials 2. Ratings (voltage, phase, current) 3. Manufacturer s name, address and telephone number 4. Product data including manufacturer s technical data 5. Applicable manufacturer specifications 6. Installation instructions 1.03 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Set all conduits and boxes plumb and level. B. All conduits and boxes shall be straight, free from blisters and defects, and shall bear the Underwriter s label PENETRATIONS A. Except where necessary, do not penetrate roofs and waterproofed surfaces. Where required, make penetrations prior to the application of roofing and waterproofing materials. B. Seal all conduits and penetrations entering hazardous areas in accordance with the NEC. C. Seal all conduits and penetrations which enter an area which r may contain a corrosive atmosphere or a potentially hazardous atmosphere. Seals shall be gas and vapor
2 PART 2- PRODUCTS 2.01 CONDUITS A. Conduits may be installed exposed unless installed in earth, or specifically as concealed on plans. B. Conduits installed in hazardous areas and in poured concrete shall be PVC coated heavy wail rigid galvanized steel. Conduits in concrete slabs shall exit slab with a factory applied PVC coating rigid galvanized pipe of a minimum length of 12. C. Schedule 80 PVC shall not be utilized unless otherwise noted on the plans. D. Conduits shall be placed at right angles or parallel to walls and securely held by stainless steel straps. E. No conduit shall be smaller than 3/4. F. The ends of all conduits where entering outlet boxes shall be fitted with locknuts and bushings. Provide ground bushings per code and, with full capacity separate ground wires. G. For all sizes of conduit larger than 1, large radius elbows and offsets made for the purpose shall be. Conduit bends shall be made in accordance with Article No, 346 of the NEC. H. If PVC conduit is permitted, all buried PVC conduit shall be provide with a rigid galvanized PVC coated rise elbow extending up to 6 feet above grade for mechanical protection. I. Conduit shall be as manufactured by Carlon, Clerio Wire and Cable or specifically approved equal LIQUID-TIGHT FLEXIBLE CONDUITS A. Connections to motors and equipment shall be made with liquid tight, flexible conduit of the same size as the conduit run
3 B. Maximum length of liquid tight flexible conduit unless otherwise noted or approved shall be 18. C. Non-metallic, liquid-tight conduits shall be provided with a polyvinyl chloride reinforced core. Conduit must conform to NEC 351 B. Conduits shall be as manufactured by Electri-Flex Liquatite Type LNM-P, Seal-Tite type VA as manufactured by American Brass Co or specifically approved equal GENERAL A. Conduits shall be sized per NFPA 70 NEC; minimum size shall be ¾. B. Each length of conduit shall bear the UL label and the manufacturer s name or trademark. C. Provide No. 12 galvanized pulling wire in each empty conduit D. In hazardous areas, provide explosion proof construction in compliance with NEC Class I, Division I, Group D. E. Use locknuts and proper insulating type bushings, as required BOXES A. Boxes and covers shall be of dimensions sufficient for the specific use and location, kind of equipment to be served. Outlet boxes shall be galvanized steel. B. All boxes for exterior and interior surface mounted work shall be galvanized steel equipped with gaskets and shall be vapor proof and watertight PULLBOXES. JUNCTION BOXES AND WIREWAYS A. Pull or junction boxes shall be NEMA 12 cabinet type construction unless noted. B. All interior wire ways and troughs shall be NEMA 4X construction
4 2.06 UNDERGROUND CONDUIT A. Unless otherwise specified or shown on the drawings, all underground conduits shall rigid galvanized steel. B. Plastic warning tape shall be buried 6 above all underground conduits LOCATIONS PART 3- EXECUTION A. The locations of outlets. Fixtures, equipment, wiring and other electrical devices are shown on the drawings. B. Conduit locations shown on the plans are not necessarily indicative of the required location or routing INSTALLATION A. Conform to NEC requirements. B. Unless otherwise shown on the drawings, all conduits shall be run exposed. C. For exposed work, conduit shall be supported by straps, securely tightly with screws. Maximum separation between supports shall be as specified in the NEC, but in no case shall exceed 5 feet. D. All exposed conduits shall be neat and symmetrical and run Insulating bushings shall be provided as required by NEC. E. The minimum depth of cover over underground conduits shall be 24, except under paved areas where cover shall be at least 30 inches. F. Underground conduit runs shall be sloped to drain away from the level of entry to equipment. G. Avoid bends and offsets where possible
5 H. Maintain a 12 inch minimum separation between all conduits and water, drainage, sewer, gas or telephone lines BOXES A. Boxes shall be supported independently of all conduits and shall be rigidly secured. B. Secure boxes by means of clamp type supports and provide rigid vibration proof installation. C. Unless otherwise shown on the plans, the mounting height of all boxes from the floor to the centerline of box shall be: 1. Switches Above grade receptacles Below grade receptacles Safety and disconnect switches Panels to top breaker Telephone outlets FINAL AND CLEANING A. Clear conduits of all obstructions and dirt prior to pulling wires or cables. B. Clean empty conduits, as specified above. END OF SECTION
