Preface The added value of the European Architectural Barometer For decision makers charged with considering company resources, staffing and marketing strategy, a clear insight into future construction volumes is essential. Economic indicators, however, seldom provide an adequate picture of these volumes. Arch-Vision therefore combines economic indicators with architects expectations in order to give insight in construction volumes. In addition, a current theme is investigated every quarter to determine trends and developments within the construction sector. That is why this report is a must-have for each construction marketeer. Every quarter we ask our clients for input about the specific topics we cover. This quarter Arch-Vision would like to thank the following clients who actively participated in the discussion, provided feedback about the topic covered in this survey and contributed suggestions for the questionnaire and the report: Armstrong Ceilings Grohe Icopal TRILUX Preface Q4 201 report This report is the Q4 201 edition of the European Architectural Barometer in which architects provide a strong indication of the developments in the construction sector. Next to the economic developments and the forecasts for the next few years this report also gives you insights in the topic. Throughout 201 the positivity in the European construction sector that was already seen in 201 continued to develop positively. After a small setback in the first quarter of 201, the expected growth figures are now back on 201 levels. The German construction sector as the biggest construction market remains the engine of European construction, though all other countries show promising figures. Even Italy, until last quarter the last country were a contraction of the market was still expected, is showing the first signs of recovery. A point of attention is the building permit development in Poland, a market which heavily relies on new-build benefits from steady building permits and at this moment a negative development is observed. Theme part building information modeling (BIM) In this quarter, architects were asked to what extent they are familiar with BIM and to what extent BIM is used already. The theme part also discusses the limitations and strengths of BIM and the reasons to start working or not start working with BIM. Arch-Vision, February 201 Page 3

: Introduction Each quarter, the European Architectural Barometer Report focuses on a different topic that plays an important role for architects in Europe. In Q4 201, the focus was on how architectural firms design and exchange data with other building parties, with a focus on the adoption and usage of. This subject was surveyed by Arch-Vision in 2013 and 20 as well, but this quarter there were some changes in the questionnaire. For the familiarity with and usage of BIM, the results of 2013 and 20 are shown and in case of remarkable differences they are described briefly. The following topics will be discussed in this chapter: Way of designing; CAD software used; Familiarity and usage of BIM; Reasons why organisations start working with BIM or have not yet started with BIM; (Dis)advantages of BIM; The extent to which several channels and methods of BIM are used; Statements related to BIM. Arch-Vision, February 201 Page 4

: Summary British and Dutch architects still at forefront of using BIM processes in construction projects. CAD software is already widely used by architects. Almost no architect still only designs on paper. Similar to 20, AutoCAD is the most used CAD software, with Germany as the exception, where ARCHICAD is the most used software. ARCHICAD is part of the German Nemetschek Group, which is probably why most German architects will keep on using CAD software from this company rather than using others such as AutoCAD. Whereas CAD is common and widely used, this is not fully the case for BIM. Still, there are two countries the UK and the Netherlands that developed a strong position at the forefront. The number of architects who are familiar with BIM as well as the number of architects that use BIM is the highest for these countries. In the UK, of the architects use BIM and in the Netherlands, even of the architects use BIM in their projects. In the UK it is, however, questionable if this amount will grow any further in the upcoming years, since almost all British architects considered using BIM in their projects, but only a small amount of architects who do not use BIM have plans to use BIM processes in their projects within the next years. In the UK, the most important reason for an organisation to not implement BIM processes in their projects, is that commercial clients do not demand it. A large part of the construction market in the UK is based on new-build housing and BIM might be less interesting for smaller projects in which individual houses are built, which can be an explanation for why BIM usage in the UK is not further developing. The Dutch construction market is just as the UK market for a large part based on new-build housing, which could make BIM less interesting. The difference is that in the Netherlands houses with a similar design are built in large volumes, which makes BIM very useful and interesting to lower failure costs a hot topic in the Netherlands. In France, Spain, and Belgium the familiarity with BIM and the usage of BIM is growing. In France and Belgium, the amount of BIM users even increased with almost 2 compared to 20. In France, this growth is easily explained since almost 4 of the projects is assigned by public clients, like the government and municipalities, and the government is actively promoting the use of BIM among its architects. In Belgium, the familiarity with BIM and its implementation in projects seems to be growing as a result of government stimulation as well as the influence of the neighbouring countries who are at the forefront of BIM usage. 6 : Summary The familiarity with BIM, and therefore the usage of BIM, is not growing amongst Italian and Polish architects. A main reason for Italian architects who are familiar with BIM to not have started with BIM (yet) is that it takes time to implement these processes. In addition, a considerable part of the Italian architects has not considered using BIM and the Italian government is not stimulating architects to use BIM. Also in Poland, the reason why the familiarity with BIM and the usage of BIM is not growing seems to (partly) be the result of the lack of stimulation by the government. In Poland, almost one-third of the projects is assigned by public clients, however a small amount of the public clients also stimulate the usage of BIM. In other countries a governmental stimulation was a very strong indicator of a rise in BIM usage. If not stimulated it might be unlikely that BIM will be implemented more often as the implementation requires a financial investment, which might not weigh up to the advantages of BIM at the moment. In Germany, familiarity with BIM and usage of BIM seems to be standing still. This is quite remarkable as governmental stimulation had a positive effect on the awareness of BIM and usage of BIM two years ago. On the other hand, we know the German market to heavily rely on the renovation works where BIM might be less useful. Architects have to understand what the most important advantages are of BIM to increase the usage of BIM. In all countries but Germany Autodesk Revit is the most used software in order to deliver the BIM projects, while in Germany ARCHICAD and Allplan (both part of Nemetschek) are used more often. BIM is mostly used for generation of 2D drawings from the 3D model and 3D visualisation and animation. Many architects in the UK, the Netherlands and also France have already implemented BIM in their organisation. Nevertheless, this is not (fully) the case for the architects in the other European countries. To increase the usage of BIM it is important that architects understand what the most important advantages are. Architects who are familiar with BIM report that high exchangeability, better collaborative working and efficiency are the success factors of BIM. Limitations of BIM have to be overcome in order to fully exploit BIM. Similar to 20, the most mentioned limitations of BIM are its complexity and the fact that it takes more time. The fact that it takes more time especially has to do with architects having to put in a lot of data directly at the start of a new BIM supported project. Manufacturers can be a valuable asset to the architects by providing BIM-ready information about products and materials, which the architects can easily implement in a BIM-project and therefore save time at the start of a new project. Furthermore multiple parties are involved in BIM supported projects, meaning that all data and information is available to stakeholders during the process. Arch-Vision, February 201 Page

Architects mostly design using 3D and 2D CAD software. Way of designing Using 3D CAD software only Using 2D and 3D CAD software Using 2D CAD software only Mostly on paper Don't know In all countries but Spain and Poland the majority of architects use 3D CAD software (although a large number still uses 2D CAD software as well). In Spain and Poland about half of the architects only use 2D CAD software. When looking at the way of designing there are clear differences between BIM users and non BIM users. 3 of the BIM users only use 3D CAD software and % of the BIM users use 2D as well as 3D CAD software. Among non-bim users almost half of the architects design using only 2D CAD software. Differences can be seen between large and smaller firms. The bigger the firm (more than 40 employees) the more 3D CAD software is used. AutoCAD most used CAD software. Similar to 20, AutoCAD has the strongest position in all countries except for Germany. In Germany ARCHICAD is the most used software. ARCHICAD, ALLPLAN and Vectorworks are all part of the German Nemetschek Group, which is probably why most German architects will keep on using CAD software from this company rather than using AutoCAD. 8 According to the architects in Europe familiar with BIM, the UK is at the forefront of BIM usage. According to the architects in Europe that are already familiar with BIM, the UK is at the forefront of BIM usage. This is something to be expected, since they gained a strong position as BIM users and already had a high penetration of BIM in projects in 2013 and 20. German architects are third in line, while they do not consider themselves to be at the forefront of BIM usage at all. Strangely, the Netherlands is not seen as a country at the forefront of BIM usage according to the architects in Europe who are familiar with BIM, while according to the numbers of Arch-Vision visible on the next page they clearly are. In addition, the Dutch architects also do not consider themselves to be at the forefront of BIM usage. [If familiar with BIM] Countries at forefront of BIM usage Top UK/Great Britain USA/Canada 21% 3 The UK is most often mentioned as the country to be at the forefront of BIM usage, followed by Germany the USA/Canada and Germany. France Scandinavian countries German architects do not consider themselves to be at the forefront of BIM usage at all. Arch-Vision, February 201 Page

Strong increase visible in the familiarity with BIM and usage of BIM among Belgium architects. In the Netherlands, of the architects use BIM in their projects. Almost all British and Dutch architects are familiar with BIM. Many architects in the UK and the Netherlands have already implemented BIM in their organisation. In the Netherlands, even of the architects use BIM in their projects, which is the highest percentage of all countries. The familiarity with BIM and the usage of BIM has strongly increased amongst Belgium architects, which could be as a result of the stimulation of BIM usage by the government. In addition, it seems likely that the familiarity with BIM among Belgium architects seems to be growing as a result of the influence of the neighbouring countries (especially France and the Netherlands), who are at the forefront of BIM usage. In France and Spain the familiarity with BIM is also growing quite strongly, while in Germany, Italy and Poland there is no increase visible. In France, the amount of BIM users almost doubled compared to 20. 14 Most architects started to use BIM because of future expectations or because it was forced by the market For German and Italian architects an important reason to start using BIM was to optimize their own business process The UK is one of the countries at the forefront of BIM usage. An important reason for British architects to start using BIM is that other parties work with BIM. Not working with BIM could mean that the architect cannot participate in certain buildings projects. This is also the case when BIM usage is forced by the market. If an architect does not want to implement the BIM processes in their designs, it may limit the possibility to be selected for a certain project. In Germany and Italy, BIM is not (yet) heavily used or supported by the government. German and Italian architects who did start using BIM say that they started because they wanted to optimize their own business process. 15 At European level, the most important reason for the organisation not to have started (yet) with BIM is that it takes time to implement BIM processes in their projects The reason why architects haven t started with BIM differs between the European countries. In the UK the most important reason for an organisation to not implement BIM processes in their projects is that commercial clients do not demand it. A large part of the construction market in the UK is based on new-build housing and BIM seems less interesting for smaller projects in which individual houses are built. This could explain why almost 4 of the British architects who know about BIM do not have plans to start working with it. In Spain and France about 2 of architects have not (yet) considered using BIM, while in the UK almost all architects considered BIM at one point. In Germany, France and Spain about one-third of the architects who know BIM are planning on using BIM processes in their projects within years. 16 In the Netherlands houses with a similar design are built in large volumes, which makes BIM very useful and interesting In Italy and Germany, more than one-third of the organisations who are familiar with BIM have not considered implementing BIM processes in their projects yet. In Italy a lack of support for BIM usage by the government seems to be a major cause as in other countries BIM usage has really benefited from governmental stimulation. Another important reason for Italian and German organisation to not have started with BIM (yet) is that it takes time. Contrary to the British architects, only a small percentage of the Dutch architects say that they have not started using BIM because their commercial clients do not ask for BIM. The Dutch construction market is like the UK market for a large part based on new-build housing. The difference between these countries is that in the Netherlands houses with a similar design are built in large volumes, which makes BIM very useful and interesting. 17 The indicated advantages of BIM differ between the European countries Exchangeability, collaborative working and efficiency are the success factors of BIM Architects that are familiar with BIM, regardless whether they use it or not, report that high exchangeability, better collaborative working and efficiency are the success factors of BIM. In 20 speed was seen as one of the success factors of BIM, while this seems less important in 201 (Italian architects still do see speed as an advantage). In the Netherlands, error-free designs by using BIM is seen as a great advantage, since this helps to limit the failure costs. Almost 4 of the British architects consider better collaborative working to be one of the advantages of BIM. This makes sense, because other parties already work with BIM, which smoothens the process. 18 Limitations of BIM especially are seen within its complexity and the fact that it takes more time to implement BIM processes in projects Limitations of BIM have to be overcome in order to fully exploit BIM. Similar to 20, the most mentioned limitations of BIM are its complexity and the fact that it takes more time. The fact that it takes more time has to do especially with architects having to put in a lot of data directly at the start of a new BIM supported project. Manufacturers can be a valuable asset to the architects by providing BIM-ready information about products and materials, which the architects can easily implement in a BIM-project and therefore save time at the start of a new project. Furthermore multiple parties are involved in BIM supported projects, which can make everything more complex and time consuming. For Poland, a country that has not really implemented BIM processes in projects yet, the most important limitation of BIM is that it requires financial investment. Although the building volume is expected to grow the upcoming years, the government is not stimulating BIM processes in projects, which might is needed in order for more Polish organizations to start implementing BIM processes in their construction projects. 19 BIM is mostly stimulated by the government in the UK and France BIM usage is mostly stimulated by the public client in the UK and France. In France, the familiarity with BIM and usage of BIM has also grown compared to 20, which could be as a result of the stimulation of BIM usage by the government. In Belgium, a quarter of the projects is assigned by the public client. Since a couple of years the Belgium government has started to stimulate BIM in projects, which explains the large increase in BIM familiarity and BIM usage among Belgium architects. In Poland almost one-third of the projects is assigned by public clients, however a small amount of the public clients also stimulate the usage of BIM. As long as the Polish government will not stimulate the usage of BIM it is unlikely that BIM will be implemented more often, since the implementation requires a financial investment, which according to the Polish architects might not weigh up to the advantages of BIM at the moment.
