Although slate valley produces a large number of slates in a range of different colours, the superior quality slate tends to be the green slate. Vermont slate is generally subject to a high concentration of iron minerals which can lead to the slate fading or changing colour after only a few years on a finished roof. 14 Brazilian Slate The Brazilian slate industry is an emerging market for roofing slates and has made a major impact on the Irish Slate market over the last decade. LBS Brazilian slates are mined in the Minas Gerais region, an area rich in geology found between Brasilia and Rio de Janeiro. LBS have travelled extensively throughout Brazil to source the finest quality slate the Rio slate, which is perfectly suited to the Irish market and climate. The Rio slate has much lower calcium carbonate levels and lower water absorption properties, in comparison to other Brazilian slates on the market. The Rio slate is also one of the few types of Brazilian slate to carry certification. The home owner should note that Brazilian slate differs geologically to other types of slate. It is essentially a sedimentary stone, rather than a metamorphic stone. This means it is hard, and should be treated with care when being fixed. LBS recommend cutting this slate with a disc machine, and hook fixing rather than nail fixing.
