Located in Cupertino, Calif. across from the Apple Campus, the Layton Construction team is busy at work on the Rosebowl Mixed-Use project. In the nation s 11th wealthiest city, the project will fill a need for more housing and provide new retail The success of the project has really relied on a team effort. Shaun Keep VP, Project Manager The project manager, Shaun Keep, vice president, describes the project as 204 two and three-bedroom apartments above 60,000 square feet of retail space. Also included in the project scope is a 32,000- square-foot concrete paver plaza with brick planters, a play area, barbecues, a dog park with artificial grass and 200,000 square feet of parking. The entire six-story project encompasses 650,000 square feet. Shaun says our team has overcome some tough challenges on the project. There was no permanent power to the job site throughout almost the entire project duration, and so all construction until now, including building power and manlifts, has been run on four large generators. The local utility company was in the process of installing a new joint trench utility corridor, and we received power to the site in late February. The site is also tight, pinned in by two thoroughfares with very little laydown area and access. Dave Diaz, safety coordinator on the project, says the biggest safety challenge has been the large number of employees on the project. Right now, there are about 300 people working on site. 3 site, adding complexity to the situation. These difficulties haven t stopped our team, though. There have been no major injuries thanks to frequent safety orientations for new employees, daily pre-task plans and an all hands safety meeting monthly. Safety-wise, we ve been doing a good job, Dave said. The team has been working 50 hours a week, or more, including alternating Saturdays to get the job done. The success of the project has really relied on a team effort and everyone has been doing their part, Shaun said. Three team members are also working through the challenge of having their families out of state while they work toward project completion. Despite several challenges, we re on track to successfully finish the job. Currently, we re applying exterior plaster and laying courtyard pavers. On the interior, we re installing cabinets and laying tile flooring and backsplash. The project will be complete in May. [ Project Highlight ] Did you know? We ve now done work in 37 states! Our project at the Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children at Presbyterian/St. Lukes Medical Center in Denver, Colo., was different because of our tiny clients. We successfully completed an intricate vertical and horizontal expansion above and adjacent to a busy operating Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The project team s safety success earned them Layton s highest safety award, the Oak Hard Hat Award for Safety Excellence. Since 1989, the Oak Hard Hat Award has recognized Layton project teams who have gone above and beyond in demonstrating exceptional safety practices. Florence Nightingale once said that Unnecessary noise, or noise that creates an expectation in the mind, is that which hurts a patient. Flash forward over 150 years, and we still recognize that noise has a negative impact on healing. This is especially true for premature infants who don t have the developmental capacity to endure environmental stresses the way a full term infant might. Environmental factors such as light, noise and vibration can all have an impact upon the health and development of premature infants. I promised the owners that our team would keep the (premature) babies safe and create as little impact to the facility as possible; thanks to thorough pre-planning and a committed Layton team, my promise was kept, said Marty Moore, senior superintendent on the project. To keep patient disturbance to a minimum, we constructed sound isolation barriers, implemented low impact drilling and demolition methodologies and diligent communication with all tradesmen. Mimi Roberson, the hospital president and CEO, applauds our entire project team for keeping their safety promise. At every juncture each member of Layton Construction staff demonstrated constant awareness and respect for safety and protection of our patients, while still being cognizant of the schedule and financial constraints of the work, she said. In addition to the project team members pictured on the left, the team included Tyler Dillon, Shawn Broby, Randy Clifton, Charlie Walls, Alan Manwill, Kelli Jodway and Randy Patterson.
