2 PROMATECT 40 INTRODUCTION PROMATECT 40 board has emerged from the newest matrix technology of combining organic and inorganic minerals with magnesium. This mineral matrix forms Mineral Bound Magnesia. This monolithic core is symmetrically reinforced between two non-combustible fi bre mesh and compressed together to form a fl at board that has a host of unique properties suitable for various heavy duty applications. The white front face of the board is fi nished with a skimcoat and is perfectly smooth; and hence can be used as a fair face without any architectural treatment if required. A thin fi bre mesh is revealed on the back face. Producing Mineral Bound Magnesia is very economical on energy. It does not require high temperatures for curing or drying. In addition, at least 25% of the composition is recycled waste. This is truly an environmental friendly board leaving little carbon footprints, and incurs no contribution to green house gases. 3 PROMATECT 40 Mineral Bound Magnesia Board P40 General Description PROMATECT 40 is Promat s newest matrix technology of binding organic materials and inorganic minerals to magnesium within a calculated mineral matrix to form a monolithic core. Known as PromaX technology, this low energy environmentally friendly manufacturing process makes an excellent board that has not only has superior fire resistance but also physical strength and performance. PROMATECT 40 is off-white in colour. One face is extremely smooth and ready to form a finished surface able to receive almost any form of architectural/finish treatment. The reverse face has a fibre mesh reinforcement (visible). PROMATECT 40 is resistant to the effects of moisture and will not physically deteriorate when used in damp or humid conditions. Performance characteristics are not degraded by age or moisture. A fully saturated PROMATECT 40 retains up to 95% of its physical strength. A health and safety data sheet is available from the Promat Technical Department and, as with any other materials should be read before working with the board. The board is not classified as a dangerous substance so no special provisions are required regarding the transportation and the disposal of the product to landfill. They can be placed in on-site rubbish skips with other general building waste which should then be disposed by a registered contractor in the appropriate and approved manner. INHALATION OF HIGH CONCENTRATIONS OF DUST CAN IRRITATE THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM. DUST CAN ALSO IRRITATE THE EYES AND/OR THE SKIN. THE INHALATION OF QUARTZ CONTAINING DUST, IN PARTICULAR HIGH CONCENTRATION OF FINE (RESPIRABLE) DUST OR OVER A PROLONGED PERIOD OF TIME CAN LEAD TO LUNG DISEASE (SILICOSIS) AND AN INCREASED RISK OF LUNG CANCER. AVOID THE INHALATION OF DUST BY USING MACHINERY WITH DUST EXTRACTION. GUARANTEE ADEQUATE VENTILATION ON THE WORK FLOOR. 4 PROMATECT 40 Working, Decorating, Health & Safety Working With The Board Cutting & Sawing Use a fi ne-toothed saw. For shaped cuts use a pad, keyhole or coping saw. Work fair face up and support the board throughout. A power saw can be used with a tungsten carbide tipped blade. Always use dust extraction and wear suitable P.P.E. Nailing When nailing without pre-drilling, position not less than 12mm from board edge. Galvanised wire nails are recommended. Do not use lost head nails or panel nails in wet areas. Boards can also be stapled, Drilling Use a high speed power drill (not hammer type) bits should have HSS tips. When drilling, always provide support to the back of the board to prevent break out. Fixing Boards should be supported at maximum 610mm centres and fi xed to supports using appropriate fi xings at nominal 200mm centres. In normal areas of use, cross noggins are required only at board joints. If increased impact resistance is required, 400mm support centres could be used with cross noggins at 1220mm centres. Planning & Sanding The edges of the boards can be planed or smoothed with a surform, rasp or fi le. Use conventional glass papers for sanding. Screwing When screwing, do not countersink 6mm boards. Pre-drilling is not always necessary. Use self-drill/self-tapping screws. Screws should be at minimum of 12mm from board edges and 50mm from board corners. Ribbed head screws are best for achieving a good countersink. Decorating The Board Painting & Papering Any conventional paints can be used. Alkali resistant primers are not necessary. Water based paints (with a watered down fi rst coat) or oil based paints can be applied using proprietary primer/ top coat systems as recommended by paint manufacturers. At all times follow paint manufacturers recommendations. When papering PROMATECT 40, size to seal against suction and improve slip, then hang papers or vinyl in the normal way. Plastering PROMATECT 40 is supplied with a skimmed fair face fi nish, at present the board is supplied with square edges only. To fl ush joints, use fi bre mesh jointing tape and any off the shelf jointing compound. Use a wide joint skim to minimise appearance of lines if decorated. At all times follow jointing compound manufacturers recommendations. Tiling Minimum 9mm thick boards should fi xed, textured side out. Supports should be maximum 400mm centres with cross noggins at transverse board joints. Seal the boards following adhesive manufacturers recommendations. Countersunk corrosion resistant screws should be used to fi x boards at 200mm centres. Fix tiles in strict accordance with manufacturers recommendations. Handling & Storage Carry boards on edge, and do not drop on their corners. PROMATECT 40 should be stored under cover on a fl at base, clear of the ground. If stored on racks, boards should be fully supported across their width at not more than 1m centres. The following recommendations must be always taken into account when handling PROMATECT 40. Lifting Always lift boards off the board below, never slide board on board or drag the stack as this could mark the surface of the lower board. Protection Boards should be stored under cover for protection against inclement weather on a covered dry level ground, away from the working area of mechanical plant. Stacking Boards should be stacked a maximum of 800mm high, on fi rm level ground. If two or more pallets are stacked, the total stack height must be not more than 3500mm. Carrying Always carry the boards on edge but do not store on edge. Health & Safety No special precautions are necessary in handling or working. When power sawing or sanding in a confi ned space, dust extraction equipment must be used to control dust levels. Care should be taken to prevent injury from sharp edges and corners. Do not leave boards lying about on site, on scaffolding or in high traffi c areas, where risk of damage or injury is increased, and prevent any misuse which could result in personal injury or damage to boards. In the event of injury obtain proper medical treatment. The materials and the packaging used for distribution do not incorporate any substances considered to be hazardous to health. PROMATECT 40 is NOT a loadbearing material and should not be used to fl oor walkways, apertures in fl oors etc. without fi rst consulting Promat. 3

5 Roof sheathing The unique character of PROMATECT T 40 makes it suitable for roof sheathing applications. This Mineral Bound Magnesia board is water resistant, stant, t, fl at and rigid, and is of a composition that is not attractive to termites, does not deteriorate even when in extended contact t with moisture. PROMATECT 40 has good thermal and sound insulation properties making it an ideal choice ce as a roofo sheathing material. Flooring and staircase decking Modern dry construction techniques are perfect for PROMATECT 40 board with its properties of being dimensionally stable and having high mechanical strength. Being water resistant, it can be used for all rooms including bathrooms, external verandas, patios etc. Whether laid on timber or steel joists, its fl at surface serves as a fl at and level platform able to receive various forms of fl oor fi nishes. PROMATECT 40 has shown to be compatible with leading brands of fl oor adhesives; however, every care should be exercised to adhere strictly to the adhesive manufacturers instructions. The thickness of the board for the system is dependant on the load and support requirements. With consideration for the appropriate safety factors, calculations can be performed to check on suitability of PROMATECT 40 for a specifi c installation. Acoustic underlay A simple underlay of PROMATECT 40 heavy duty fl at board over a hard concrete fl oor helps to provide additional insulation against impact noise. The mineral material in PROMATECT 40 can improve the acoustic insulation in any particular system. Please consult Promat Asia Pacifi c technical department for further details. 4

6 PROMATECT 40 water proof bathroom floor The use of PROMATECT 40 board can be extended to provide a water proof system application where it is used as a base sheet et for tiles in wet environments (bathroom) or water proof decks. Open plan office partitions Non-combustible PROMATECT 40 board is a better alternative to wood based products for open plan offi ce partitions as it is a non-combustible, reducing the fi re load within offi ce premises. PROMATECT 40 with its ease of installation and handling ng makes it the ideal choice for contractors. PROMATECT 40 APPLICATIONS DETAILS Backing board and lost formwork PROMATECT 40 can be used in situations where permanent formwork is required, as it with not rot or degrade over time exposed to water. This attribute also enables use of PROMATECT 40 as backing as a tile underlay board for casting of terrazzo and marble overlay. Base for kitchen, laboratory and industrial work surfaces PROMATECT 40 is a reliable option as a base for solid surfaces. It provides strong support and is very durable. PROMATECT 40 laid as the base cabinet can be be laminated with a decorative fi nish:- tiles etc. PROMATECT 40 can also be used for cabinet doors and carcases with lamination or decoration. 5

7 PROMATECT 40 APPLICATIONS DETAILS Partitions PROMATECT 40 advantages when used as a partition system are as below: Lightweight lightweight construction is a major criteria for a building system as this will ease the overall installation process. Furthermore, the total weight of the building is greatly reduced, and total cost of construction can be reduced effectively due to speed of installation. Thermal insulation PROMATECT 40 has a very low thermal conductivity value. Therefore, the total system can provide very good thermal insulation. Cavity fi llers can be included to increase the thermal effi ciency of the system. Sound insulation by adding PROMATECT 40 as a complete system with steel stud, with or without cavity infi ll material will give good sound insulation despite this being a lightweight system using a thinner board than is generally used in such systems. Easy decoration PROMATECT 40 can be easily decorated with tiles, wall paper, paint, laminates etc to provide aesthetic value, without any special treatment required in most instances. 9 Decoration Decorative materials e.g. paint, paper, laminates etc. can be easily applied to PROMATECT 40 with minimal preparation. For a lay in exposed grid systems in certain types of location, due to humidity differences, it is advisable to prime the rear surface of the panels to ensure bowing or warping does not occur. Fibre plaster ceiling PROMATECT 40 ceiling also can be suitable for the application of decorative fi bre plaster mouldings. Fibre plaster can be formed and applied to PROMATECT 40 ceiling linings. PROMATECT 40 APPLICATIONS DETAILS Tiling on PROMATECT 40 PROMATECT 40 boards can be tiled, provided due consideration is given to the installation of the boards and the requirements for additional framing to allow the system to bear the weight or load prior to applying the tiles. Some areas where PROMATECT 40 can be widely used other than the traditional partition and ceiling constructions are as backing boards and underlay for tiles particularly in sanitary areas such as bathrooms, kitchens, etc. minimum board thickness should be of at least 9mm depending ding on the area of application, the type of framing the weight of the tiles and the surface fi nish. 8
