2 10 good reasons for choosing BorECO polypropylene for sewage and drainage systems compared to other materials Most sewerage and wastewater systems in the Middle East and Asia are still designed in rigid pipe materials such as concrete, clay and asbestos cement. However this is now changing across the world as engineers are accepting that there are many benefits offered by polypropylene (PP) piping systems as shown below. These advantages of PP systems are supported by technical data and papers from Borouge collect them all in the attached wallet Design Freedom The pipe system producer has maximum freedom to develop products with the optimum stiffness to weight ratio in sizes from 100 mm to 4,000 mm diameter using solid wall or structured wall designs. Injection moulded components and sheets can be produced from the same PP materials and used to fabricate other system fittings such as manholes. BorECO materials fulfill the material requirements of EN1852 and EN13476 and the QC pressure test requirements of DIN Easy to manufacture PP pipes can be extruded on any modern single screw extruder that is used to produce PE pipes with only minor process adjustments to account for differences in viscosity and other properties. Since PP materials are very easy to process and have very consistent properties, quality issues are minimised. Twin walled PP pipes can be produced using PE corrugators but to optimise the profile design and minimize the weight of the pipe new mould blocks are recommended. Lightweight and easy to install The specific weight of PP is similar to that of PE but the stiffness is significantly higher which means the pipes are lighter in weight and lower in cost than the equivalent size of PE pipe. Compared to concrete, clay or asbestos cement pipes PP systems are very light and easy to handle on site and require much less mechanical handling equipment which reduces installation times and costs, together with minimising the disruption to the local community. Flexible and able to absorb external loading Flexible pipes absorb external loads by deformation. This small amount of ovalisation transfers the stresses to the side-fill material around the pipe with a negligible reduction in the flow capacity of the sewer. In rigid pipes the stresses are retained in the pipe wall which eventually leads to cracking and failure especially where chemical attack has lead to wall thickness reduction.

3 Tough and will not crack PP materials are very tough and will not crack or shatter during transportation, handling and installation as is the case with concrete, clay or asbestos cement pipes. Therefore there is no need to provide extra materials to site to cover such wastage. Similarly, adding later house connections to the system does not pose a major problem or risk causing major damage to the sewer. Hydraulically smooth bore Plastic pipes have very smooth internal surfaces and consequently a very low friction factor. Typically a PP sewage pipe will have a friction factor k or equivalent sand roughness of 0.02 to 0.05 mm and there will be minimal increase during its lifetime. This low friction factor compared to concrete which is two orders of magnitude greater provides some scope for reducing the fall of the sewer or increasing the flow velocity. Easy to Joint also to old pipe systems Jointing can be using integral push-fit sockets with rubber rings or on plain ended pipes using double sockets or mechanical fittings. PP systems can also be welded to prevent the leakage of hazardous fluids or the infiltration of ground water or to completely eliminate the threat of root intrusion in heavily wooded areas. This can by the butt fusion of solid wall and some structured wall PP pipes or the extrusion welding of socket joints. Corrosion Resistant Corrosion is a major problem with concrete and asbestos cement pipes due to the formation of sulphuric acid on the pipe wall due to the oxidation of hydrogen sulphide in the atmosphere inside the sewer. These leads to the loss of material from the pipe wall and the eventual collapse of the sewer it is more severe at high temperatures and low flow rates. PP materials are resistant to acids and are often used to line concrete sewers to prevent corrosion. Abrasion Resistant It has been demonstrated in numerous tests that polymers such as PP have a much higher resistance to abrasion than concrete, clay or asbestos cement pipes. It is for this reason that polyolefin pipes or polyolefin lined steel pipes are used to carry abrasive slurries in mining and mineral processing operations. Abrasion resistance is particularly important for sewers in the Middle East where sand is often carried in the effluent. Durable systems with a long maintenance free life PP systems are totally resistant to corrosion and do not loose wall thickness in operation and therefore retain their strength, unlike concrete and asbestos cement. Studies in Europe show that the risk of failure in plastic systems is only 15% that of rigid pipes. Compared to other plastic solutions PP are tough and will resist cracking even under deformations much higher than those which could be experienced in practice.

4 Materials for Sewage and Drainage Applications PP Grades for non pressure applications BorECO BA212E This is a high modulus polypropylene block copolymer (PP-B HM) natural coloured material specifically designed for the production of non pressure sewage and drainage pipes. The higher stiffness provides a 15% weight saving against standard PP-B and a 27% weight saving compared to PVC. It is ideal for the production of solid wall and spiral wound pipes. BorECO BA415E This is an intermediate stiffness polypropylene block copolymer (PP-B) natural coloured material designed specifically for the production of twin wall sewage and drainage pipes which will produce high quality products at high output rates. BorSafe HE3490-IM This is a PE100 black compound with improved flow properties, which makes it ideal for the production of injection moulded fittings and the production of sheets and fabricated fittings and components. The higher flow reduces built in stresses and the production cycle times and improves welding performance.
