6 VERSO accessories for easy installation New requirements for underlay materials for laminate flooring VERSO Tape For a perfect installation and complete protection against residual substrate moisture. The technical bulletin of the EPLF based on norm CEN/TS explains the many requirements for underlays for laminate flooring. The essential ones are summarized here. Requirements based on the substrate / structure VERSO PE Foil For perfect protection against residual substrate moisture (for products without integrated foil). 1.1 Heated floors / Cooled floors (R λ,b ) flooring is generally suitable for use on heated and cooled floors. To ensure efficient performance of the underfloor heating system, the underlay should provide the least possible thermal insulation, so that the combined thermal resistance of the underlay and the laminate flooring (R λ,b ) remains as low as possible. 1.3 (PC) Hollow spots due to unevenness must be avoided to protect the floor from stress and to provide better acoustics. The underlay should be able to level out small localized irregularities such as screed granules on the substrate. The higher the PC value (localized conformability), the better the levelling capacity. Maximum allowed R value of the total floor system: Heated floors: R 0.15 m²k/w Cooled floors: R 0.10 m²k/w PC 0.5 mm 10 POS display with innovative product range logic 1.2 Thermal insulation (R λ ) flooring provides relatively low thermal insulation. On unheated substrates, an underlay with high thermal resistance (R λ ) can significantly increase the insulation value of the overall floor system, thereby increasing the surface temperature. Minimum requirement (underlay only): R λ m²k/w 1.4 Protection against moisture (SD) On mineral substrates, moisture protection is mandatory to prevent damage to the flooring. Protection against rising damp can be provided with an additional vapour control layer or with an appropriately equipped underlay. The higher the SD value (water vapour ), the lower the vapour permeability. Requirements based on use Requirements based on acoustics IS 14 db 2.1 Protection against loading (DL, CC, CS) Everyday use places stress on floor systems. Underlays must be able to withstand certain levels of stress throughout the entire service life: DL: Dynamic loads caused by walking CC: Long-term stress caused by static loads (furniture) CS: Temporary stress caused by heavy loads Minimum requirements: DL 10,000 cycles CC 2 kpa CS 10 kpa (Note: 10 kpa = approx. 1 t/m²)) Elevated requirements: DL 100,000 cycles CC 20 kpa CS 60 kpa 3.1 reduction (IS) The noise of footsteps transmitted to the room below is known as impact sound. In combination with the flooring, undertlays with a high IS value (impact sound reduction) can significantly reduce impact sound. Elevated requirements: IS 18 db (Note: A noise level reduction of 10 db corresponds to a 50% reduction of the loudness perceived by the human ear) 2.2 Protection against falling objects (RLB) To minimize the risk of surface damage, the floor system must be able to substantially absorb extreme forces of short duration, e.g. impact of falling objects. The higher the RLB value (impact loading) of the underlay, the better the underlay can protect the floor. The requirement for the underlay is specified as the minimum drop height in cm. RLB 50 cm Elevated requirements: RLB 120 cm 3.2 Reflected reduction (RWS) Walking noise heard in the same room is known as reflected. Suitable underlays can noticeably reduce reflected. The test standard for determining so-called RWS values is still in development, so no generally accepted test method is available yet. Once the new test standard is issued, specific recommendations for minimum requirements can be given. Nevertheless, today it can be said that the higher the RWS value (reflected reduction), the better. Source: European Producers of Flooring
