4 Introduction This training module is based on the Department of Building and Housing (DBH) Compliance Document F2 Hazardous Building Materials, Amendment 2 effective 1 December The New Zealand Building Code clause F2 was first published in July A compliance document is for use in establishing compliance with the New Zealand Building Code. There are also other methods of compliance which are detailed in the New Zealand Building Code Handbook. For the document history please refer to the inside cover of the document. Symbols Where you see the symbol, you are being asked to complete an activity using the F2 Document. Activity 1 Tip Where you see the symbol you should pause to read this carefully as it is an important tip or note. For this course you will need to download Compliance Document Clause F2 Hazardous Building Materials from It is recommended that you make yourself familiar with the preface to the New Zealand Building Code Handbook that both describes the status of Compliance Documents and explains alternative methods of achieving compliance. 5 NZ Building Code Clause F2 Hazardous Building Materials All Compliance Documents commence with a copy of the relevant NZ Building Code clause. Activity 1 Review the NZBC clause for F2 [page 3 of the Document] Q.1 What is the objective of clause F2? [F2.1] Q. 2 Fill in the blanks from the functional requirement: [F2.2] Buildings materials which are p hazardous, shall be used in ways that a.. undue risk to people. Q.3 Consider the performance requirements and answer the questions below: [F2.3.1] Name the two locations where harmful quantities of gas, liquid, radiation or solid particles should not be emitted - [F2.3.2] What should you do with transparent panels that are capable of being mistaken for a clear path of travel? Tip Definitions for any other italicised word may be found in the NZ Building Code Handbook, which contains a full list of definitions. The Handbook can be downloaded from If you do not understand any terms refer back to this reference point and look up the word in alphabetical order. 8 Verification Method F1/VM1 No specific test methods have been adopted for verifying compliance with the Performance of NZBC F2. Acceptable Solution F2/AS1 Activity 4 Carefully read Acceptable Solution F2/AS1 [page 13] and test your understanding with the exercises below: Q.1 True or False? Please circle the correct answer (a) Glazing subject to human impact shall comply with NZS 4223:Part 3 (b) Human impact is the highest impact loading (c) Glazing within 2000mm of the floor level may be subject to human impact (d) Safety glazing material may be used in accordance with safety Grades (e) A framed shower screen has a Grade B human impact safety requirement (f) There is no minimum thickness for toughened safety glass in bathrooms (g) Grade A safety glazing material should be used within 1500 mm above the abutting finished floor level or standing area of a bath or shower Q.2 When is Asbestos or materials containing asbestos acceptable in building materials? Tip Procedures for encapsulation can be obtained from the Occupational Safety and Health section of the Department of Labour, who can also advise on the special legislation governing asbestos and the handling of products containing asbestos. 10 Answers to Activities Activity 1: Q.1 What is the objective of clause F2? OBJECTIVE F2.1 The objective of this provision is to safeguard people from injury or illness caused by exposure to hazardous building materials. Q. 2 Fill in the blanks from the functional requirement: F2.2 Building materials which are potentially hazardous, shall be used in ways that avoid undue risk to people. Q.3 Consider the performance requirements and answer the questions below: [F2.3.1] Name the two locations where harmful quantities of gas, liquid, radiation or solid particles should not be emitted - At the surface of the material where the material is exposed, or in the atmosphere of any space. [F2.3.2] What should you do with transparent panels that are capable of being mistaken for a clear path of travel? Does this apply to Housing? Transparent panels should be marked to make them visible. This does not apply to Housing [F2.3.3] List the three acceptable outcomes for glass or other brittle materials with which people are likely to come into contact with. (a) (b) (c) If broken on impact, break in a way which is unlikely to cause injury, or Resist a reasonably foreseeable impact without breaking, or Be protected from impact.
