1 EQ Credit 4.2: LowEmitting Materials: Paints & Coatings VOC budget Multidisciplinary Science Building Bloomington, Indiana In response for clarification of EQ Credit 4.2: LowEmitting Materials: Paints and Coatings, a VOC budget has been provided to demonstrate the overall installed VOC is below allowable VOC limits. All paints and coatings used throughout the building are equal to or less than the allowable VOC limits, except for the Epolon II MultiMil Epoxy product, which is used exclusively on the Ground floor. Therefore, it has been assumed that if the actual (installed) VOC calculation for all paints on the Ground floor is less than the allowable (baseline) VOC limit, the overall building meets the criteria for this credit. The method for calculating the baseline VOC limit and actual VOC limit involved calculating the surface area of the painted ceilings and walls. Window and side lite frames, doors and door frames that did not have a field painted surface were excluded from the area calculations, along with floor coatings since all floor products meet the criteria for this credit. The surface area was then multiplied by the product application rate and number of coatings to calculate the total quantity of the product used. Primers, block fillers/sealers, paints and epoxy products were included in the overall quantity calculation. The product quantity (converted to liters) was then multiplied by the allowable and actual VOC limits (g/l) for comparison. Calculations for the Ground floor demonstrate the actual VOC level of 729,127.95g is lower than the allowable VOC level of 737,461.84g. The uploaded excel file contains all data used to calculate the VOC limits for this credit. A Ground floor plan, ceiling and finish plan, along with the product data sheets (application rate information) have been uploaded as supporting documentation.

2 EQ Credit 4.2 LowEmitting Materials: Paints & Coatings August 2, 2010 Re: Limited Use of High VOC Paints Narrative LEED Certification Indiana University Multidisciplinary Science Building Phase II Flad Project No Requirement Compliance Credit 4.2: Architectural paints, coatings and primers applied to interior walls and ceilings shall not exceed the VOC content limits established in Green Seal Standard GS11, Paints, First Edition, May 20, Flats: 50 g/l NonFlats: 150 g/l Architectural paints, coatings and primers specified for this project comply with the requirements for this credit with the exception of the following products utilized in the Basement Level Vivarium: Manufacturer s Name: Product Name: Product No.: SherwinWilliams Epolon II MultiMil Epoxy B62800 Part A B62V800 Part B VOC Content (g/l): 280 Allowable VOC Content (g/l): 150 (Non Flats) 250 (Waterproofing Sealers) Special Circumstance Compliant paint products are not currently available for use within the Vivarium and therefore more suitable, alternative products have been specified and applied. The Vivarium represents a relatively small portion of the overall building program and is physically isolated from all other occupied spaces within the general building. A dedicated mechanical exhaust system providing 100% outside air is included in the design of this program. The overall building has been occupied since October 2009, following a complete and comprehensive building flush. Occupancy of the Vivarium is anticipated in September The paint product application within the Vivarium represents approximately 9.11% of the overall buildingwide application of all architectural paints, coatings and primers, per the following program summary:

3 Space Program Area (asf) Neuroscience 28,150 Vivarium 6,500 Biogeochemical Processes 12,075 Atmospheric Sciences 12,050 Multidisciplinary Science Programs 375 Shared Instrumentation Facilities 2,425 Meeting and Gathering Space 5,225 Buildingwide Support Space 2,175 Classroom (Shell) 2,350 Total 71,325 asf The paint product application within the Vivarium is limited to wall surfaces only. Ceiling and floor materials are in full compliance. Summary Complete buildingwide conformance and compliance with LEED requirements for lowvoc paints and coatings is not achievable. However, with the exception of the Basement Level Vivarium, 90.89% of the overall building can meet the limits established. Given the nature of the Vivarium program, its limited human occupancy, physical separation that includes a dedicated exhaust, and occupancy well beyond the building flush, we believe that we have satisfied the buildingwide intent to reduce the quantity of indoor air contaminants that are odorous, irritating and/or harmful to the comfort and wellbeing of installers and occupants.

Such information and recommendations set forth herein are subject to change and pertain to the product offered at the time of publication. Consult your Sherwin Williams representative to obtain the most recent Product Data Information and Application Bulletin. PERFORMANCE TIPS When using spray application, use a 50% overlap with each pass of the gun to avoid holidays, bare areas, and pinholes. If necessary, cross spray at a right angle. Spreading rates are calculated on volume solids and do not include an application loss factor due to surface profi le, roughness or porosity of the surface, skill and technique of the applicator, method of application, various surface irregularities, material lost during mixing, spillage, overthinning, climatic conditions, and excessive fi lm build. Excessive reduction of material can affect fi lm build, appearance, and adhesion. Excessive fi lm build, poor ventilation, and cool temperatures may cause solvent entrapment and premature coating failure. Do not apply the material beyond recommended pot life. Do not mix previously catalyzed material with new. Depending on condition of substrate, more than one coat may be required. Do not apply under 50 sq ft/gal or mudcracking may occur. Not recommended for previously painted surfaces. Temperatures above 77 F (25 o C) will shorten pot life. For best results, apply by airless spray and immediately back roll. Do not apply over moisture, or below 45 F (7 o C). Refer to Product Information sheet for additional performance characteristics and properties. Refer to the MSDS sheet before use.
