The systems are available in various sizes in half-round, semi-elliptical, square and ogee profiles and in a variety of colours. Standards MFP Rainwater systems are manufactured to conform to appropriate specifications and standards. MFP operates a quality system conforming to I.S. EN ISO 9002 : 1994 which involves regular third party inspection of manufacturer s works. Advantages MFP gutter systems are tough and of proven durability, while lightweight and easy to handle and install. Their simple method of jointing means that they can easily be removed or extended. Available in a variety of colours and profiles, chosen to compliment any building design, they are corrosion free and require minimal maintenance. These advantages, together with their cost-effectiveness, offer a better choice in terms of performance and aesthetic appeal. Technical Advice A technical advisory service is available to give guidance on design and the correct use of all MFP products. 3 6395 MFP Rainwater single pgs 12/11/ :42 Page 2 Gutter Profile Selector Classic Flowline Choice of Gutter There are a number of points to consider when choosing a gutter system for a particular building. The carrying capacity of a system is of prime importance, but one must also consider the colour and profiles best suited to enhance the building, the ease of installation and possible subsequent extension or alteration, and whether one uses square or round downpipes. Design Directives Irish Building Regulations 1997 requirements are set out in Technical Guidance Document H, Drainage and Waste Disposal, sub-section 1.5 (Surface Water Drainage). U.K. Building Regulations 2000 requirements are set out in Approved Document H, Drainage and Waste Disposal, part H3 Rainwater Drainage, 2002 Edition. BS EN : gravity drainage inside buildings: roof drainage layout and calculation, gives detailed recommendations on design and should be consulted if conditions other than normal are expected. Rainfall Intensity It is generally accepted that the calculation of roof drainage is based on a rainfall intensity of 75mm per hour. Statistics show that rainfall of higher intensity has been experienced rarely and for very short periods of time. This factor, however, should be considered if it is imperative that overflow be totally avoided. Effective Roof Area In the case of a flat roof (including sloping roofs of less than 10 pitch) the effective roof area is the area on plan of the portion of roof to be drained. For pitched roofs, however, allowance must be made for the varying angles of rainfall which increases its intensity. The method of calculation for determining the area of such roofs is as follows:- L = Length of Roof H = Vertical height of Roof W = Width of Roof section Effective roof area M 2 = (L x W) + (L x h ) 2 Rainfall Run-off To calculate the rainfall run-off in litres per second it is necessary simply to multiply the Effective Roof Area by a factor of (based on a rainfall intensity of 75mm per hour). Carrying Capacity There are a number of factors affecting the carrying capacity of gutters. The principal ones are whether or not the gutters are laid to a fall and whether the outlet is placed at the centre of the run or at one end. Flow rates are also affected by the type and configuration of the downpipe system being used and, for the purpose of our calculations, all figures shown in the performance table are based on using 68mm circular downpipe with a 300mm offset, fitted with unsealed joints directly to the gutter outlet. H W Thermal Movement The coefficient of linear expansion of PVCu is 6 x 10-5 / C which means that gutters and downpipes may expand or contract up to 0.6mm per metre per 10 C change of temperature. All gutter systems contained in this brochure have been designed to take account of this movement. It is important, therefore, that these systems are installed in accordance with installation instructions on pages 18 & 19. Snow Loading All of the gutter systems in this brochure have been subjected to simulated snow loading tests as, or similar to, the test for resistance to load detailed in BS4576: Part 1 and perform in excess of requirements. Recommendation for installations in areas of severe snowfall, where it may be necessary to fit snow boards at eaves of pitched roofs to protect against damage or injury, are given in BS EN : L 2

If, however, painting should be desired, an oil based alkyd paint is recommended (standard gloss paint). Timber fascias which have been treated with wood preservative should be allowed to dry thoroughly before fixing gutter systems. Handling PVCu gutters and pipes are strong, though lightweight, and are therefore easily handled. However, reasonable care should be exercised whilst handling in extremely cold conditions. It is advantageous to preserve the appearance of these attractive self-coloured materials. When products are delivered to site, therefore, they should, preferably, be placed inside a storage building. Storage Gutters and pipes should be well supported on suitable racks. Dividing the framework or shelves into sections helps to segregate different products and prevents overloading and possible distortion of bottom layers. Pipes and gutter bundles should be stacked no more than seven high. If it is necessary to store in the open for long periods, or if products are to be exposed to strong sunlight, they should be covered with an opaque sheet. Fittings supplied in cardboard boxes or polythene bags should be stored under cover and kept packed until required. Solvent cement must be securely stored in a cool place out of direct sunlight and away from any heat source. 3

19 6395 MFP Rainwater single pgs 12/11/ :43 Page 18 Installation Instructions Notched Gutter Systems The notch technique of jointing half-round gutters has been used successfully for many years and is well proven. The 100mm and 125mm half-round systems both have an integral socket moulded on one end of each length of gutter. A flexible PVCu strap is employed to compress the spigot on to the synthetic rubber seal, which is factory secured to the socket. (Fig. 1) The Deepflow and Industrial systems are also notched but they are assembled using special integrally-moulded retaining nibs on all fittings which, together with the factoryfitted synthetic rubber seals, make site-assembly simple and ensures a watertight joint. (Fig. 2) Thermal Movement The notch technique, when correctly executed as indicated, ensures that the system cannot pull apart but still provides for expansion and contraction resulting from changes in temperature and climatic conditions. Fascia Brackets Brackets are secured to the fascia board with two 25 x 5mm sheradized round headed screws. Spacing of the brackets should never exceed 1 metre centres. Brackets which have an option for single screw fixing should be secured by using a 32 x 5mm noncorrosive screw. In areas subjected to heavy snow falls, closer bracket spacing is required and it is recommended that each bracket is secured with a minimum of two 25mm screws. Angles and Outlets All internal and external angles and outlets should have close supporting brackets not exceeding 150mm on each side. Union and Stopends All union and stopends should have a close supporting bracket not exceeding 150mm on one side. 20 6395 MFP Rainwater single pgs 12/11/ :43 Page 19 Installation Instructions Plain Ended Gutter System The Flowline, Classic, Clipmaster and Miniline systems are plain ended gutters and are jointed to the fittings simply by engaging one edge of the gutter under the factoryfitted clip on the fitting and exerting downward pressure on the other edge, thereby compressing the gutter against the seal to form a watertight joint. An insertion depth is clearly marked on each fitting and the gutter end should not project beyond this point. Fit Gutter up to insertion depth Thermal Movement Certain key fittings incorporate screw fixing points on the back edge and must be screwed to the fascia. When installed in this way, the joint cannot pull apart and will absorb the expansion and contraction resulting from variations in temperature. Stop ends must be fitted only to short lengths of gutter, i.e. within 300mm of an adjacent fitting. Classic gutter is normally fitted level and offers a choice of either conventional external fascia brackets or top hung internal brackets which, because they are concealed, give an uninterrupted line to the ogee gutter. Angles and Outlets All internal and external angles and outlets should have close supporting brackets at a distance not exceeding 150mm on each side. Unions and Stopends Classic unions and all stopends should have a close supporting bracket at a distance not exceeding 150mm on one side. Flowline and Clipmaster unions feature integral brackets, therefore close supporting brackets are not required. Flowline and Classic outlets are available to suit both 68mm circular and 65mm square downpipe systems. Clipmaster outlets are available to suit 68mm circular pipework only but accept both plain-ended or socketed pipe. 21 6395 MFP Rainwater single pgs 12/11/ :43 Page 20 Installation Instructions Rainwater Pipes Rainwater pipes are generally fitted externally with joints between spigot and socket left unsealed. 68mm circular rainwater pipe is suitable for use with 100mm and 125mm Half Round, Clipmaster, Deepflow, Flowline and Classic systems. 81mm circular rainwater pipe is suitable for use with 125mm Half Round system. 65mm square pipe is mainly used with Flowline and Classic systems. It may be installed with 100mm and 125mm Half Round, Clipmaster and Deepflow systems by using the RLE3 adaptor. The 110mm Circular rainwater pipe is designed for the Industrial Gutter system. The 51mm Circular rainwater pipe is used in conjunction with the 75mm Miniline system. FIXING CLIP FIXING CLIP Every rainwater pipe should have a clip located at its socket to support the pipework system. Intermediate pipe clips should then be provided at maximum 1.8m centres. Side Inlet Connections The Universal gully has 3 boss upstands on each side to suit waste, rainwater and drainage connections.
