The system is applied in an industrial process by specialist coating companies approved by Akzo Nobel Powder Coatings Ltd. Building Regulations 1 The Building Regulations 1991 (as amended) (England and Wales) In the opinion of the British Board of Agrément, the use of Interpon D Systems on window frames is not subject to these Regulations. The Secretary of State has agreed with the British Board of Agrément, the aspects of performance to be used by the BBA in assessing the compliance of roofing and cladding with the Building Regulations. In the opinion of the BBA, Interpon D coated aluminium and galvanized steel roofing and cladding panels, if used in accordance with the provisions of this Certificate, will meet the relevant requirements. Requirement: B4 External fire spread The products meet this Requirement. See sections 2.1 to 2.4 of the relevant Detail Sheets. Requirement: Regulation 7 Materials and workmanship The products are acceptable. See section 3.1 of the relevant Detail Sheets. 2 Electronic Copy 2 The Building Standards (Scotland) Regulations 1990 (as amended) In the opinion of the BBA, Interpon D coated aluminium and galvanized steel components, if used in accordance with the provisions of this Certificate, will satisfy the various Regulations and related Technical Standards as listed below. Regulation: 10 Fitness of materials Standard: B2.1 Selection and use of materials and components The products are acceptable. See section 3.1 of the relevant Detail Sheets. Regulation: 12 Structural fire precautions Standard: D6.7 Roofs and rooflights The products are unrestricted by this Standard. See sections 2.1 to 2.4 of the relevant Detail Sheets. 3 The Building Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1994 (as amended) In the opinion of the BBA, Interpon D coated aluminium and galvanized steel components, if used in accordance with the provisions of this Certificate, will satisfy the various Building Regulations as stated below. Regulation: B2 Fitness of materials and workmanship The products are acceptable. See section 3.1 of the relevant Detail Sheets. Regulation: E8 External fire spread The products are unrestricted by this Regulation. See sections 2.1 to 2.4 of the relevant Detail Sheets. Technical Specification 4 Description 4.1 Interpon D Systems are decorative/protective polyester powder coatings for application to window frames or roofing/cladding panels. 4.2 The products are applied only by specialist contractors that have been assessed by Akzo Nobel Powder Coatings Ltd and found to meet the requirements for Interpon D Approved Applicator status. 4.3 These companies are regularly inspected by Akzo Nobel Powder Coatings Ltd to ensure that the application complies with the specification. Akzo Nobel Powder Coatings Ltd retain the right to withdraw approval from any applicator. 4.4 The products are available in a wide range of colours, details of which are available from Akzo Nobel Powder Coatings Ltd. 4.5 Suitable substrates for Interpon D coatings are aluminium to: BS 1471 : 1972 BS 1474 : 1987 BS 1490 : 1988 BS EN : 1995 or galvanized steel to: BS EN : 1991 BS EN : 1992 BS EN ISO 1461 : The powder is manufactured by blending resin and pigments and passing through a hot melt extrusion process followed by grinding to a specific particle size Articles to be coated are given an appropriate pretreatment, dried, electrostatically sprayed with the Interpon D powder and heat cured. 5 Quality control 5.1 Quality control tests are carried out by Akzo Nobel Powder Coatings Ltd on each batch of material produced. Samples are sprayed with the product and the ultimate properties tested. 5.2 Approved Applicator status requires each applicator to prepare at least two samples per production line for test and reference at four-hourly intervals or for each colour change. The samples are physically tested at the applicator's works and a report is retained for inspection during Akzo Nobel Powder Coatings Ltd's regular visits under their Approved Applicator programme. 5.3 Duplicate test samples are maintained by an Approved Applicator to be supplied to Akzo Nobel Powder Coatings Ltd upon demand. 5.4 Samples are retained for a minimum period of 25 years or for the period of the Guarantee. 6 Delivery and site handling 6.1 Interpon D coated articles are packaged by the applicator to avoid damage in handling prior to installation. 6.2 Storage on site should follow good practice and be in a sheltered position, away from the possibility of impact and abrasion. Design Data 7 General 7.1 The Interpon D range of powder coatings is satisfactory for application in an industrial process

3 to aluminium and galvanized steel by Akzo Nobel Powder Coatings Ltd's Approved Applicators who have specific authorisation for the product. 7.2 Window frames and cladding or roofing panels suitable for use in any normal situation or location, designed in accordance with BS 4873 : 1986, BS 6510 : 1984, BS 8200 : 1985, can be manufactured using Interpon D coatings. 7.3 The advice of the manufacturer should be sought where the products are to be installed in corrosive or hazardous environments. 8 Compatibility 8.1 To prevent bimetallic corrosion, direct contact of the uncoated side of the substrate with other metals should be avoided. Fixing devices must be of the same material as, or compatible with, the substrate. Precautions must also be taken to avoid direct contact of the uncoated side with timber treated with a fire retardant or preserved with copper or fluoride compounds. 8.2 Interpon D coated components are not affected by contact with fresh mortar, sealants, glazing compounds or window-cleaning materials. Fully coated articles may be embedded in mortar. 9 Location The coatings are tough and abrasion resistant, making the product suitable for use at low level in areas readily accessible to the public (eg alongside pedestrian thoroughfares and playing fields) where accidental damage is possible. Thus coated items are suitable for use in category B (and less vulnerable) situations, as described in BS 8200 : 1985, Table 2, reproduced (in part) in Table 1. Electronic Copy In polluted atmospheres it may be necessary to clean the coating at regular intervals to maintain appearance. Normal precautions in building design must be taken to shed water clear of the coating to prevent the surface becoming marked In the event of a cladding or roofing panel coated with Interpon D needing to be replaced, some fading of colour may be visible although the difference in colour between new and existing panels should be acceptable under normal circumstances. Conditions of Certification 12 Conditions 12.1 This Certificate: (a) relates only to the product that is described, installed, used and maintained as set out in this Certificate; (b) is granted only to the company, firm or person identified on the front cover no other company, firm or person may hold or claim any entitlement to this Certificate; (c) has to be read, considered and used as a whole document it may be misleading and will be incomplete to be selective; (d) is copyright of the BBA References in this Certificate to any Act of Parliament, Regulation made thereunder, Directive or Regulation of the European Union, Statutory Instrument, Code of Practice, British Standard, manufacturers instructions or similar publication, shall be construed as references to such publication in the form in which it was current at the date of this Certificate. 5 Electronic Copy CI/SfB (49) Vu Akzo Nobel Powder Coatings Ltd Certificate No 91/2704 DETAIL SHEET 5 INTERPON D36 Product THIS DETAIL SHEET RELATES TO INTERPON D36, A POLYESTER POWDER COATING SYSTEM FOR ALUMINIUM AND GALVANIZED STEEL WINDOW FRAMES, CURTAIN WALLING, OR CLADDING PANELS. The product must be applied and installed in accordance with the conditions set out in the Front Sheets of this Certificate. This Detail Sheet should be read in conjunction with the Front Sheets which give the Technical Specification and Design Data common to all products covered by the Certificate, the position under the Building Regulations, the Installation procedure and the Conditions of Certification. Technical Specification 1 Description 1.1 Interpon D36 is a decorative/protective modified polyester powder coating for application to window frames, curtain walling, or cladding panels. 1.2 The product is available in a range of standard colours in gloss, satin or matt finishes including the Futura range. Details can be obtained from the manufacturer. Other colours not in the range can be produced to clients requirements, after an investigation to ensure colour stability. 1.3 The product has a minimum cured coating thickness of 40 µm. Design Data 2 Performance in fire 2.1 When tested to BS : 1989, a white Interpon D36 coating achieved an overall index of performance (I) of 0.1 and a sub-index (i 1 ) of When tested to BS : 1997, a white Interpon D36 coating had a Class 1 surface. 2.3 The white Interpon D36 coating therefore has a Class 0 or low risk surface as defined in the national Building Regulations. 2.4 This performance may not be achieved by other colours of the product. The designations of other colours should be confirmed by: England and Wales Test or assessment in accordance with Approved Document B, Appendix A, clause 1 Scotland Test to conform with Standard D10.1 Northern Ireland Test or assessment by a UKAS accredited laboratory or an independent consultant with appropriate experience. 3 Durability 3.1 Interpon D36 coated on galvanized steel or aluminium cladding, window frames and curtain walling will perform effectively with an anticipated life expectancy exceeding 30 years. It will have an anticipated decorative life of 15 years in heavily-polluted areas and 20 years in other areas. 3.2 Interpon D36 on galvanized steel should not be used in coastal areas (within 5 km of the sea). 3.3 Maintenance painting may be required at regular intervals if a high-aesthetic standard is required. The manufacturer should be consulted regarding suitable overcoating systems. Installation 4 Procedure Interpon D36 should be installed in the manner described in section 11 of the Front Sheets of this Certificate. The product must be applied and installed in accordance with the conditions set out in the Front Sheets of this Certificate. This Detail Sheet should be read in conjunction with the Front Sheets which give the Technical Specification and Design Data common to all products covered by the Certificate, the position under the Building Regulations, the Installation procedure and the Conditions of Certification. The designations of other products should be confirmed by: England and Wales Test or assessment in accordance with Approved Document B, Appendix A, clause 1 Scotland Test to conform with Standards D9.1 and D10.1 Northern Ireland Test or assessment by a UKAS accredited laboratory or an independent consultant with appropriate experience. 3 Durability 3.1 Interpon D2525 coated on aluminium cladding, window frames, curtain walling, and roofing will perform effectively with an anticipated life expectancy exceeding 30 years.
