24 GRID AND FABRIC Gator Base The only base technology saving 6 of excavation, 6 of compated aggregate and much more. Alliance Designer Products Inc. has introduced to the market a revolutionary technology for the foundations when installing concrete pavers, natural stones or porcelain tiles. This technology exhibits the memory characteristics of polypropylene and allows the material to retain its original installation. Gator Base design load transfer. The Gator Base with its interlocked paneling system, is engineered to support a load and disperse it into a very light load below the panel. The native soil feels little to no pressure when people walk on the paved surfaces. That Is How It Works! WAY In the pursuit of excellence, Alliance has retained the services of the University du Quebec engineering institute (ETS) in Montreal to perform testing on the Gator Base versus a traditional granular base. In conclusion; It can be stated that both systems are equivalent under static load and dynamic load. Gator Base panel is equipped with channels for water evacuation along a 1 slope as well as 5 drainage holes per 16 sq. in. For detail information on the installation steps please refer to page TRADITIONAL WAY Gator Base Units are Perfect for All Projects Open Spaces Small and large projects Up a hill Staircase landings Tight work spaces Narrow alleys Where material storage is prohibited in streets Where construction speed is critical Limited budget Concrete paver, slab, natural stone and porcelain tile projects Pedestrian applications such as: patio, sidewalk, landing, terraces, pool surrounding PAVER PAVER BEDDING SAND 1/2 Five (5) Gator Base panels are the equivalent of 1,440 lbs. of stone and they can be carried in one hand (equivalent to 28.9 sq. ft. filled with 6 of crushed stones). 25 KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN A INSTALLATION AND A TRADITIONAL PAVER INSTALLATION Gator Base is the solution to the three biggest challenges faced by every hardscape installer: excavation, time and labor, and freeze/thaw cycles. And with over 2 million square feet already installed, contractors are clearly seeing the benefits of breaking the mold and trying something new! So what exactly are the differences between using Gator Base vs. installing pavers the old fashioned way? Keep reading because you re about to find out! Here are details on the three key differences between a Gator Base installation and a traditional paver installation. 1 - Less Excavation When excavating for a traditional paver installation, it s customary to reserve six inches for crushed stone. With a Gator Base installation, there s no need to do this. Here s why. The interlocking panels distribute all dynamic loads to a very wide area, practically eliminating any pressure on the ground. Essentially, one Gator Base panel is the equivalent to six inches of crushed stone! FUN FACT: A 144 lb. person produces a 1 PSI (pounds per square inch) load on a 12" x12" paver. Gator Base is engineered to support a dynamic load of up to 8 PSI (or 1,152 lbs.) on a 12 x12 paver! So now you re probably asking, but what about drainage? Contractors commonly believe that the crushed stone in a traditional installation is partly there to allow for water drainage (which ultimately prevents frost from heaving the pavers). Well, Gator Base has got you covered there, too! For proper drainage, each Gator Base panel is equipped with channels for water evacuation along a one degree slope. There are also five drainage holes per every 16-square inch. Properly compacted crushed stone hardly drains at all! Less excavation is a tremendous benefit offered by a Gator Base installation. Not only will you enjoy a time savings, but a cost savings on Six inches of crushed stone A truck and driver on the road Dumping fees Wear and tear on machinery See video (polybind.com/videos) 2 - Reduced Labor Excavation is one area where labor can be saved on a Gator Base job, however, Gator Base also drastically cuts down on the time it takes to perform an installation. With each panel weighing in at a mere 1.32 lbs. (600 g), moving them in and setting them down takes a matter of minutes! No more hauling in heavy aggregate material... 5 panels or 28.9 square feet of Gator Base (which weighs only 6.6 lbs. (3 kg)) replaces a whopping 1,440 lbs. (653 kg) of crushed stone (and all of the tedious hours of manual labor that comes along with it)! We recently filmed a side-byside Gator Base vs. traditional paver installation. The Gator Base project was completed 57% faster! By the time the crew started installing the polymeric sand on the Gator Base job, the crew working on the traditional job still had to: Complete the bedding sand Install the pavers Install the edging Compact the pavers And the list goes on! See video (polybind.com/videos) 3 - Protection From Freeze Thaw Cycles One of the most commonly asked questions we get on Gator Base is, how does it perform in climates that experience freeze/thaw cycles? As we noted above, crushed stone in a traditional installation really doesn t allow for water drainage and it is all too common to see frost heaving pavers when the temperatures drop. Well, Gator Base is specifically engineered to protect against the effects of freeze/thaw! One panel of Gator Base acts like a thermal blanket that insulates as well as 18 inches of crushed stone... making it three times more effective than crushed stone as an insulator! With an R-Value of 3.6 (per inch thickness), Gator Base will significantly reduce the impact of freeze and thaw cycles. So, are you ready to try something new for a change? Try the Gator Base way! 36 STARTING A LUCRATIVE CLEANING Greenscapes Inc. CT-based and 30 years of being in business specializes in professional construction and design services, owner Tim Hara has discovered the key to leveraging pre-existing relationships and unlocking a new revenue source. In this case study, we ll unveil the secrets to success in what still remains unchartered territory for many contractors and installers... the cleaning and sealing business. & BUSINESS SEALING GRID AND FABRIC EDGES INSTALLATION Alliance Designer Products proud manufacturer of Polybind products Featured Greenscapes Project: A walkway designed with pavers and sealed with Polybind High Gloss sealer. This product drastically changes the look of the pavers. It s something the customer actually has to see in order to believe. -Says Tim Hara A New Opportunity Awaits... Cleaning and sealing can be tricky business. First, while there are a multitude of cleaners and sealers on the market, it s not always clear which products will be a good for each project. Then there s the application process. Working with sealer requires a certain level of know-how and skill (as well as cooperation from Mother Nature). One small error during the installation can cause a job to fail fast. Lastly, estimating cleaning/sealing projects can be complicated if you re not familiar with the products and application process. So it s understandable why many landscape and hardscape contractors steer clear of this kind of work. However... You re missing a huge opportunity for added revenue if you re not offering these services! In our recent interview with Tim Hara, owner of Greenscapes Inc. in Hebron, CT, we collected some inspiring insights on his company s success with cleaning and sealing... and now it s time to share them with you! To learn more, visit us online at Polybind.com 36 Product Knowledge Continuing education and staying on top of what s new in the industry is an integral piece of the Greenscapes business model. Not only is the company ICPI- and NCMA-certified, but Tim and his team know how to utilize their resources when it comes gaining product knowledge. While the crew has been using Alliance Designer Products cleaners and sealers for a solid three years, they still have questions from time to time. And when questions arise, they go straight to the source and turn to the Alliance support team for answers.

Some other tools you ll want to consider: a pressure washer, solventbased rollers, water- based rollers, brushes, and protective gear for handling products. This is especially important for sealing jobs. Below is a list of factors you can review with each client to help drill down which product(s) best matches their sealer needs. Planning & Estimating Common Considerations Weather can pose a variety of scheduling Customers preference or requests challenges, so it s important to know Environment (indoor/outdoor, ambient and understand how rain and extreme temperature, weather conditions etc.) temperatures can affect a sealing project. When planning, in most cases, a sealer should only be applied to pavers that are completely dry and no rain is in the forecast for hours. However, cleaning is typically ok with rain showers after 12 hours. For all patio or sidewalk installations, we follow-up with the customer six months later by sending an about cleaning and sealing, shares Tim. This has been a very successful strategy for Greenscapes as it generates the majority of their cleaning and sealing business. Another piece of marketing advice from Greenscapes: show and tell! One of Tim s favorite sealers to use on projects is the Alliance Designer Products sealers family. For customers who are looking for color or sheen enhancement on their pavers, an actual sealed sample is extremely effective. This product drastically changes the look of the pavers. It s something the customer actually has to see in order to believe. Recap Launching a successful cleaning and sealing business can happen... it certainly has for Greenscapes! 66 Installation Instructions Under License from Brock International-Patented and Patents Pending: Please follow ICPI Tech Specs 2 for compaction guidelines STEP 1 Excavation of the new Gator Base area STEP 4 Installation of the Gator Base GRID AND FABRIC Total excavation will be done as follows. 1 Total depth will be determined by adding the following elements depths: Gator Fabric GF 4.4, compacted bedding sand s final height (1/2 [13 mm]), Gator Base (3/4 [19 mm]), and paver s height. Total excavation width should be 6 (15 cm) wider on each side than the final paved area. This excavation could be done using a shovel or excavator. Prior to excavating, check with local utility services to ensure digging does not damage underground pipes or wires. 2B B The native soil needs to be prepared and compacted in the same way that one would prepare a traditional base installation, using a hand tamper or plate compactor. This area should be as smooth as possible to get rid of high or low spots within about 3/8 (10 mm). Using a string level (stakes and a string line), tie the string to the stakes to establish level according to which the final slope will be measured (minimum of 1 degree to the desired final paver level). Once the final level is achieved, proceed to step 3. STEP 3 Addition of Gator Fabric GF 4.4, levelling and compacted bedding sand 3B B Spread an even layer of sand to a depth of 3/4 (19 mm) over the Gator Fabric GF 4.4. To obtain a perfect 3/4 (19 mm) bedding layer, use two 3/4 (19 mm) pipes with an equal distance of 4 to 6 ft (1.22 to 1.83 m) over the Gator Fabric GF 4.4 and fill the surrounding area with sand. Using a straight board, level the bedding sand relatively to the pipes. When removing the pipes, fill in the empty gaps. Remember that levelling and compacting the bedding sand will be the last step prior to installing the Gator Base. 3C Make sure to install the Gator Base on the extended excavation area (total excavation should be 6 [15 cm] wider on each side than the final paved area). Start laying the Gator Base units while ensuring locking of the tongue & groove system. This will guarantee the panels stability when the pavers or slabs are laid down. Trim any visible curves or protruding angles using a utility knife. STEP 5 Installation of pavers and Polybind Edge 4 EDGES STEP 2 Levelling and compacting of the base 2A A Once excavation is completed, level the excavated area using a rake or shovel. Ensure a slope of at least 1 degree away from any structure, such as a house. 3A A Lay down the Gator Fabric GF 4.4 and cover the complete excavated area. C Using a hand compactor and/or plate compactor, compact the 3/4 (19 mm) of bedding sand until you obtain a final height of ½ (13 mm) of compacted bedding sand. The final area should be smooth. 5 Lay the pavers directly onto the Gator Base according to the selected pattern. (Adding a second layer ½ (13 mm) of loose bedding sand on top of the Gator Base is also an accepted method of installation.) Use a rubber mallet to adjust the pavers. Make sure the Gator Base is 6 (15 cm) wider on each side than the paved surface. Install Polybind Edge on the Gator Base, making sure it rests firmly against the pavers. A Gator Base Screw will be driven into every second hole to maximize lateral support of the Polybind Edge. INSTALLATION To learn more, visit us online at Polybind.com 66

67 STEP 6 Sweeping, compacting and blowing of the Polybind Complete polymeric sand 6A A When emptying the Polybind Complete polymeric sand bag, spread it onto the dry paved surface. This will avoid segregation and sweeping a mountain of sand. When sweeping the polymeric sand, spread over a small area before moving onto the next, while making sure to fill in the joints. IF USING COMPLETE G2 FOLLOW THESE INFORMATION: B It is now time to compact the sand into the joints using a hand tamper or plate compactor. Do not use a plate compactor over slabs. Repeat filling and compacting of the paver joints. Finally, sweep the surface with a fine bristle broom and remove all excess sand. Ensure the sand is 1/8 (3 mm) lower than the paver chamfers. When laying different thickness of pavers or stones, adding a second layer 1/2 (13 mm) of loose bedding sand on top of the Gator Base is also an accepted method of installation. Visit our website for any updated instructions and or TDS. 6B Activate COMPLETE G2 by showering 50 sq. ft. (4,5 sq. m.) section for 1 minute, starting at the lowest point. Once all the sections are activated, rinse off any debris that is on the total paver surface. If using COMPLETE continue step 6C and 7A, B and C. PAVER C Finally, use a blower to blow off all sand residue lying on the paved surface. The combined actions of the sweeping and blowing will help eliminate any hazing effect. STEP 7 Watering and blowing action The watering process will activate the polymeric sand s bonding process, and the sand will harden when dry.
