Major Plans/Strategies C5 Forest Management Plan R11 Forest Management Plan Kananaskis Vegetation Management Strategy Willmore Wilderness Fire Management Plan SW Healthy Forest Strategy Healthy Pine Strategy

Major Plans/Strategies Detailed Forest Management Plans are required to conduct numerous non timber values analyses Many DFMPs are resequencing harvest for MPB control Fire regime assessments

Fire Regimes: What have we got? Because many different questions were asked None of the answers are wrong Tower of Babel phenomenon FRI well suited to weave a common narrative

Issues Methodology has varied due to the questions being asked What is the modern fire regime? What parameters are we interested in? What is the historical fire regime? What period of history? What data is available? Mountain Legacy Project gives us another anchor point How much funding was available?

Issues Methodology has varied due to the questions being asked Differences in outputs from different studies appear to contradict each other BUT do they? If information is compiled and examined together, more commonalities may be exposed

Issues Reports not well understood Definitions vary Parameters not well defined or understood Complex studies that make many assumptions that the reader may not understand Numbers imply precision that may not be there, or only disagree due to the initial question What does it all mean?

Issues Most studies done to date not published or peer reviewed Different sources of funding, departments, governments, branches, industry Need coordination and dissemination of what we already know RESEARCH and EXTENSION

Issues Deficit calculations of great interest Fire Regime Condition Classification (USFS) Burn severity (historic) also of great interest Proxy measures can include vegetation complexity

Issues MPB control and prevention are some of the primary drivers of Prescribed Burn program Some urgency to get a better understanding of the interrelationship of fire and MPB MPB control and Prescribed Fire are based on assumed historical fire regime

Known changes Forest cover has increased Burning rates have decreased Burn severity likely increasing Grassland and meadows are being lost Whitebark and Limber pine Alpine impacts: loss of habitat for numerous high elevation species

The Solution is not: To impose standardized data and methods, and install a single agency to control all funding and do all of the research. But Rather: To provide the knowledge, tools, expertise, and a partnership mechanism to allow organizations to gain efficiencies and credibility by working together. To develop and apply any standards only as directed by the partnership. To perform and/or coordinate research activities only as directed by the partnership.

Sampling Issues What you expect to find influences what you do find Assumption has been that stand replacement fire is the norm Stand replacement fire results in few fire scars Stand ages* tell you the story of the disturbance history So you sample to find stand ages create a stand origin map

Castle Mountain 2005 T Smith, E Higgs 2005

Sampling Issues Assume a surface or mixed fire regime There will be many good fire scars in the stands that had low severity fire So you sample to find scars, and date them Sample in a grid, or randomly within strata, to determine spatial extent of fires
