Catalog Description National Wildfire Coordination Group Firefighter Type II Certification, including study of the National Incident Command Systems (ICS-100), Human Dimensions in the Wildland Fire Service (L-180) Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior (S-190), Firefighting Safety and Training (S-130). Weekly reading seminar, lectures and problem sessions. Last 4 weeks of semester will be prescribed fire planning and field implementation of methodologies learned in course. Justification for new course: This course has been demanded by students and taught for 3 years as a special topics course. This enables students to do research, work and manage wildland fires, which is a significant component of Natural Resource Management. We are making it into a permanent course because we expect students to continue to demand this as part of their education. The course prepares students for forestry, wildlife, and parks/recreation management positions that utilize wildland fire as a management tool. Does this course have a fee? Consultation Instructional Resources Statement new resources required. Course Objectives/Goals This is an introductory course designed to train entry-level firefighters with Firefighter Type II (FFT2) Certification. The course will cover incident management organization, firefighting techniques, suppression equipment, safety, strategy/tactics, fire behavior, and establish an awareness of human performance issues that impact fireline job performance. The required basic firefighting training will includes skills training in: Incident Command Systems (ICS-100), Human Factors in the Wildland Fire Service (L-180), Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior (S-190), and Firefighting Training (S-130) Student Learning Outcomes Students will be able to predict fire behavior in relation to fuels, weather and topograph, work within incident management and organization, demonstrate firefighting techniques, demonstrate proper use of suppression equipment, state all safety rules, know the standing orders, demonstrate analysis and implementation strategy, tactics and operations, and demonstrate awareness of human performance issues that impact fireline job performance. Student Evaluation Methods Evaluation Method Weighting/Points for Each Details Exam 20 Wildland Fire Behavior Exam - Basic Concepts, Principles of Topography, Fuels, Weather, and Behavior and Safety Exam 20 Firefighter Preparedness, ICS Overview, Resource Types, Risk Management, Transportation Safety, Hand Tools, Firing Devices, Use of Water, Suppression, Patrolling and Communication, Mopup and Securing the Fireline, Hazardous Material Awareness, and Wildland/Urban Interface Safety.
5 Exam 10 Basic Features of ICS, Incident Commander and Command Staff Functions, general Staff Functions, ICS Facilities, Responsibilities, and Working in the Wildland Fire Service, Communications, Situational Awareness, Decision Making, and Team Cohesion. Final Exam 20 Final Exam - Comprehensive Participation 10 Field Day - Wildland Fire Engine Operations and Equipment, Pump and Hose Operations, Ignition Devices, Hand Tools, and Emergency Fire Shelter Deployment. Other 0 Physical fitness test for Arduous Status - t required for the course grade, but must be passed for FFT2 certification. He is a qualified instructor and current one level above that identified in the FFT2 course outline of NWCG Field Managers Course Guide. NCSU students that successfully complete the class are qualified and nationally recognized as a NWCG Firefighter Type 2. The NWCG provides national leadership to develop, maintain, and communicate interagency standards, guidelines, qualifications, training, and other capabilities that enable interoperable operations among federal and non-federal entities.
