5 Yes Which Curricula are Affected? SIS Program Code Program Title Required or Elective? 15FORMTBS Forest Management Elective 15NATREECO Natural Resources Elective Catalog Description Examines characteristics of and requirements for successfully manipulating stands of deciduous trees to meet specific economic, habitat and social objectives. Analyzes biological and site physical factors that affect growth and yield potential, opportunities for operational activities and expected results. Compares differences among deciduous species that affect responses to silvicultural stand manipulation. Justification for new course: Pine silviculture dominates commercial forest management in the Southeastern United States. But deciduous forests occupy significant areas of the landscape. Historically manipulation of deciduous woodlands has been less commercially valued and, as a result, degradation of deciduous woodlands through selective removal of the best genetic specimens has been a dominant trend. Alternatively, commercially viable clear cut harvests have frequently resulted in tree species conversion during stand regeneration. Compared to now routine understanding of pine plantation silviculture, deciduous woodland silviculture is appreciable more complicated and requires attentive management. Does this course have a fee? No Is this a GEP Course? No Consultation Instructional Resources Statement Qualified faculty member will be teaching this course as part of assigned teaching load. Course Objectives/Goals Introduce hardwood resource: types, species, diversity, site requirements, ecology, distribution, ownership and values Describe the physical landscape, site factors, climate and Provinces where hardwoods grow Discuss the history of development of hardwood forests including the impact of natural and anthropogenic factors Discuss the silviculture of hardwood species and types in natural stands Discuss the silviculture of hardwood plantations and natural stands Discuss stand dynamics, growth and yield and, tree and wood quality Discuss the impact of exotics including insect and disease problems Discuss non-timber values of hardwood forests Discuss international issues and the future of the global hardwood resource Discuss other topics related to hardwoods as appropriate or as requested Student Learning Outcomes
6 Identify and evaluate site conditions necessary for viable hardwood forest development. Distinguish and compare differences between patterns of individual species growth and of stand growth in terms of the interactions with natural factors. Analyze and articulate opportunities for manipulation of hardwood growth and for utilization. Explain regional and global opportunities and constraints affecting the status of the hardwood resource. Student Evaluation Methods Evaluation Method Weighting/Points for Each Details Oral Presentation 25 Each student will make at least one presentation in class, and will lead the class in discussion of a topic. The topic will be either selected by the student or assigned by the instructor and will relate to hardwoods. Topics will be assigned during the first two weeks of the course. A one-page summary of the topic will be distributed to the class by the presenter on the day of the presentation. Presentations will be evaluated according to the following rubric: Presentation content Fits theme Is logically organized Provides useful information on specific silvicultural issue of concern Reliable (e.g., valid citations, etc.) Handout provided to class adequately covers main points Presentation quality Presenter avoids reading Pace and transitions are appropriate Speaker voice volume and behavior are appropriate Image technology Color and font ensure good visibility Images support content Number of points per slide is appropriate
7 Major Paper 25 Each student will be required to prepare a term paper for this class. The topic can be of the student s choice but related to hardwood ecology, silviculture, management or current relevant topics. Topics must be selected and approved prior to November 1. Undergraduate students: Term paper length should be 8-10 pages, double spaced. All papers must be critically edited for content and grammar before submission. References must be appropriately cited. Papers are due at the last class period. Graduate students: Term paper must be a minimum length of 15 double-spaced pages, with a minimum of citations of peer-reviewed materials. Topics must be discussed with the instructor. the graduate term paper must meet masters quality standards, i.e., writing style appropriate for a journal, goals and objectives clearly stated, evidence clearly presented and analyzed, and judgment-based conclusions drawn. Participation 25 Students are expected to attend all class session including field trips. Contributions to discussions and responses to presentations will be monitored. Class members will be evaluated for attendance, preparation, and participation by weekly exercise. See syllabus for grading rubric. Final Exam 25 Each student will prepare and submit the take home final, addressing questions relevant to the topics, discussions and field trips included in the semester schedule. Syllabus is good. Suggest more descriptive short title. pjharrie 3/24/2017: The only thing I would add is that the prereq portion could be stated a bit more clearly to avoid confusion ABGS Reviewer Comments: - Abbreviated title could be clearer. Response from instructor: "I like it the way it is. We use HRDWD for hardwoods all the time as well as MGT" - A couple of typos and inconsistencies in the syllabus, but nothing significant or that prevents approval. Course Reviewer Comments forestry (Sat, 16 Apr :11:55 GMT): Rollback: Gary, For 503 students we need some verbiage in grading/ description/syllabus on what is different for graduate students (i.e. what makes 503 a higher level course than 403. Maybe it is in there already, but I couldn't find it. Joe stwarren (Tue, 11 Oct :52:09 GMT): Two changes in the printed syllabus that do not appear in the currently uploaded syllabus: Addition of 508 wherever 408 appears 1. Revision of term paper grade component to reflect added rigor required of graduate students 2. Also Addition of one week of introductions and wrap-up Also it would be useful to add the 508 numbering to the CIM database. Currently this course only appears at the undergraduate level in CIM. stwarren (Wed, 12 Oct :48:43 GMT): Revised syllabus uploaded. aeherget (Wed, 02 Nov :52:29 GMT): Rollback: AECHH: Tabled at Nov UCCC Meeting. aeherget (Tue, 28 Feb :15:25 GMT): AECHH: Uploading updated syllabus at instructor's request via addressing pending items 2/28/2017.
